John Oliver Goes Off on Trump's 'Mission Accomplished' Syria Tweets

By Marlow Stern, The Daily Beast

16 April 18

The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host sadly could not weigh in on former FBI director James Comey’s sit-down interview with George Stephanopoulos—though he did… a bit.

n Sunday, John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight aired mere moments after the conclusion of James Comey’s hotly anticipated 20/20 interview with George Stephanopoulos. And so, while Oliver wasn’t able to comment on the exclusive sit-down—owing to his show taping at 7 p.m. ET—he was able to riff on the numerous “tantalizing” teaser clips from the chat.

“I honestly never thought [these] words would come out of my mouth, but I don’t know whether the—the—current president of the United States was with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow in 2013. It’s possible, but I don’t know,” Comey told Stephanopoulos, adding that he found the Trump briefing to be “really weird.”

Yeah. James Comey thought that conversation was ‘really weird.’ And I will remind you: This is a man that’s seen Anthony Weiner’s emails,” joked Oliver.

The HBO host explained how the Comey interview was “just the end of a ludicrously dramatic week” that began with the FBI raiding Trump lawyer/fixer Michael Cohen’s office, reportedly related to the hush money he’d arranged for alleged Trump paramours Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. CNN’s Gloria Borger reported that the Cohen raid left Trump “pissed, flailing, and upset,” as well as filled with anger “beyond what anyone can imagine.” That’s “really saying something,” offered Oliver, “given that Trump’s anger level is permanently somewhere between child who accidentally ate a pound of cocaine throwing a tantrum in a Kmart and Alec Baldwin after being told the other party is finishing dessert and the table is going to be another 10 to 15 minutes.”

But that wasn’t all that happened over the past week—perhaps the most chaotic week yet in the Trump administration. “Yes, the deputy finance chair of the RNC [Elliott Broidy] cheated on his wife with a former Playboy model and paid her off, and has now resigned,” said Oliver. “Now, on top of all of this, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan unexpectedly announced he wouldn’t seek re-election; Trump pardoned Scooter Libby; and it came to light that the National Enquirer may have paid a doorman at Trump World Tower to keep quiet about rumors that Trump had fathered a secret child with his housekeeper in the 1980s. Oh, and on Friday night, we bombed Syria.”

Oliver then got serious. “Look, there are those who would argue that something had to be done in response to Assad’s suspected chemical attack, but there are legitimate debates of whether Trump had the authorization to order these strikes, and whether this risks drawing us into a longer-term conflict for which we have no clear strategy,” he said, “but don’t worry on that front, because Trump has already declared ‘Mission Accomplished.’”

Yes, on Saturday morning President Trump borrowed former president George W. Bush’s infamous phrase to describe the Syria airstrikes.

And if that weren’t enough, after being called out for his silly blunder—including by Bush’s former press secretary Ari Fleischer—Trump doubled down on Sunday morning:

“What? It does not fill you with confidence to have a president who announces, ‘I know I’m repeating one of the most notorious political blunders in recent history. I meant to do it, everyone should do it, and I’m gonna do it again forever,’” said Oliver. “I have got to say, if Trump’s intention was to descend so far into self-parody that he somehow burrowed into the Earth’s crust and came out on the other side, mission fucking accomplished.”

For what it’s worth, Trump also used the phrase “mission accomplished” back in 2014, when his bid was not accepted to purchase the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

The only reason I bid on @buffalobills was to make sure they stayed in Buffalo, where they belong. Mission accomplished,” tweeted Trump.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Oliver needs to read the news a little more. "Mission Accoplished" actually refers to "Operation Desert Stormy," which was the campaign to drive Stormy off the pages of the newspapers and off of TV. It worked. We've heard noting of Stormy in nearly a week.

This sort of "sortie" always works. The major media in the US react to world events just like children. First you dangle a green bauble before their eyes and they are ready to believe that all the world is green. Then you dangle a blue one and suddenly the whole world is green.

Oliver seems to be one of these children. I've never seen his program so I'm not sure, but all the comments I read about his show leads me to think he's a bauble watcher.

Trump definitely did use the term "mission accomplished" in reference to the Syria bombing. Whether he also used it previously in reference to Stormy Daniels I can't say.

You should have heard him rip about progressives too. A barrel of laughs, telling us why we should do as we're told. He's a corporate tool.

I think a majority of intelligent commenters from RSN have run for the hills since the implementation of the post-election censorship policy. Every time RR comments I know to expect a plethora of red thumbs and irrelevant illogical responses.
Allow me to explain the comment for the mouth-breathers . The first paragraph is a JOKE! RR is well aware that “Mission Accomplished” was referring to the Syria bombing. He was using the name of Trumps mistress “Stormy” and the name of the bombing campaign “Desert Storm” (when W declared “mission accomplished”), thus “Desert Stormy”, to make the point that Trymps true purpose in bombing Syria was to distract from all of his domestic scandals. If so, it worked quite well, at least temporarily, thus “Mission Accomplished.”
Now that you understand the comment, try responding to what he was actually saying.

RR. Yes, Oliver is a bauble follower. He probably would openly admit it, as his job is basically to mock the other bauble followers.

I've never seen his program but I feel perfectly free to comment critically on it??????? Seriously? And you are criticizing others as taking too much at face value?

The only reason you haven't heard much about Stormy Daniels in a week is because you are not paying attention.

Rodion Raskolnikov needs to read an article "a little more" This is what Oliver wrote:
Yes, on Saturday morning President Trump borrowed former president George W. Bush’s infamous phrase to describe the Syria airstrikes. Thus Oliver is very well aware that "mission accomplished" was a statement of ex president Bush. That Trump also may have used this statement is new for me.

If you have never watched Oliver's show, RR, then, how can you evaluate it? Your judgment is based solely on hearsay evidence and, hence, is of little worth. Granted, as Trump continues to self destruct, he becomes harder and harder to defend. No doubt, the pressures on him from Stormy Daniels to Vladimir Putin are exacting a dreadful toll. But, you chose to support the Dumpster, RR, and now you must bear responsibility for that decision.

I don't have cable TV so I don't watch any of these assholes -- Oliver, Hannity, Maddow, O'Reilly, and the rest on CNN, MSNBC, 'Coldbert, or whatever. I get overwhelmed by comments I read about these dopes, just like the article above. So I react to what people say about them. It is all bad. Yes, my evidence is hearsay. Thank god that is all I have. I can't imagine sitting through one of these programs.

RR: If you’re “ overwhelmed” by “hearsay” of what other people say about Hannity, Maddox, etc., why don’t you get basic cable (it’s really cheap) to get direct access to the sources in question?
OnTNN (Trump News Network), you’ll like what you hear from Hannity, Pirro, Ingraham who foam at the mouth whenever the name Mueller comes up. O’Reilly, alas, is no longer holding forth on cable. You would like him as well.
And when you listen to Colbert (who you can see without cable) and Maddow) it’ be your turn to foam at the mouth..

- if you think putin's mouthpiece, comrade rr, supports dickhead, you must be mistaken? - comrade rr wouldn't dare support dumpster? - putin's mouthpiece operates under strict rules of dialog laid down by deity - see, for example -

Quoting Rodion Raskolnikov 2018-04-03 17:31:
I never defend Trump. As for Putin, I only say that he's been a good president for Russia.

poor us? what we may mistake for support is simply comrade rr's rapt admiration for the shared genius of two great, conservative leaders - putin and dumpster - or, as, within strict rules rr may wiggle so far as -

Quoting Rodion Raskolnikov 2018-04-04 12:08:
Putin's conservatism believes in people and the idea that governments should preserve people's traditions and culture.

note that blinders putin imposes on rr, permit rr to share to us copious, detailed lines of thought that always only coincidentally endorse what putin, troll teams in petersburg and russian intelligence can collect, organize, draft and edit halfway round the world

in sum, it may appear to us that rr supports dumpster? to the contrary rr only supports great, conservative leadership!
