Report About Michael Cohen's Secret Trip to Prague Corroborates Key Steele Dossier Claim

By Aaron Rupar, ThinkProgress

Mueller reportedly has evidence that Trump's attorney has been lying.

n Friday, McClatchy reported that special counsel Robert Mueller possesses evidence that Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, “secretly made a late-summer trip to Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign.”

If true, the report corroborates a key claim in former British spy Christopher Steele’s partially unverified dossier detailing the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russians.

While the McClatchy report doesn’t detail what evidence Mueller has, it notes that “investigators have traced evidence that Cohen entered the Czech Republic through Germany, apparently during August or early September of 2016 as the ex-spy reported.

It’s unclear who Cohen met with or what he did in Prague, but his reported trip there came shortly after Paul Manafort abruptly resigned from his role as Trump campaign chairman amid news he had secretly received $12.7 million in secret payment from a pro-Putin Ukrainian political party.

According to the Steele dossier, Cohen traveled to Prague to meet with Russian officials and Eastern European hackers in late August or early September.

“[T]he agenda comprised questions on how deniable cash payments were to be made to hackers who had worked in Europe under Kremlin direction against the CLINTON campaign and various contingencies for covering up these operations and Moscow’s secret liaison with the TRUMP team more generally,” the dossier says.

When the contents of the dossier were first published by Buzzfeed in January 2017, then-president-elect Trump dismissed the entire document as “false and fake.” Cohen denied that he had ever been to Prague, and used his denial of that specific claim as evidence that the whole dossier is fake news.

In recent months, Trump has repeatedly attacked the credibility of the dossier, and used his attacks on it to try and discredit the entire Russia investigation.

Trump’s allies in Congress have also used the dossier to try and discredit the entire Russia investigation. The so-called “Nunes memo” released by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee alleges the FBI inappropriately relied on the dossier to obtain a FISA warrant to surveil Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page.

Not only would evidence that Cohen indeed traveled to Prague reveal he’s been lying, but it would discredit the argument Trump and his allies in Congress have been using to discredit the Russia investigation. It could also constitute smoking gun evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the presidential campaign.

The most salacious claim in the dossier is that Russia is in possession of a tape of Trump participating in lewd sex acts in a Moscow hotel. An excerpt of former FBI director James Comey’s new book released this week contradicts an alibi Trump has used to deny such a tape exists.

McClatchy’s report about Cohen’s trip to Prague comes at the end of an eventful week for Trump’s longtime personal attorney. On Monday, his home, office, and hotel room were raided by FBI agents. Trump and Cohen’s lawyers went to court Friday in an effort to block the Justice Department from reading seized documents.

On Friday evening, the New York Time reported that Trump and his advisers “have concluded that a wide-ranging corruption investigation into his personal lawyer poses a greater and more imminent threat to the president than even the special counsel’s investigation.”

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

It is astonishing how determined the cabal of spooks in the FBI, CIA, and DOJ are to prove the Steele Dossier true. "Christopher Steele’s partially unverified dossier" In fact, there is only one statement in the dossier that is true. That is Carter Page's trip to Moscow for a conference. The rest is totally unverified.

So who are all the names: Informant A, B, C and so on. Why are these not known by now.

This rumor will die in a day or so. The MSN can simply make up any kind of fake news it likes and it will circulate for a few days and disappear down the memory hole.

What's the photo above. It is any passport. I have three passports. You'd have to see the inside to know it was Cohen's and then look to see if there was a Czech stamp on the particular date. The photo above is proof of nothing. But it is a good fake.

The Mueller investigation is beginning to tear away at the fabric of US society. Trump is no good, but what Mueller is doing is worse. He's setting a precedent or following Ken Starr's precedent that a prosecutor can hound a president to drive him from office. It does not matter that there is no crime anywhere in sight.

Comey is fixated on a tape of prostitutes peeing, just as Starr was obsessed with Clinton inserting cigars in Monica's vagina. Comey and Mueller are perverts. There is no tape, other than the one that plays over and over inside Comey's head.

Nice polemic (you've had a lot of practice!), but not germane to this article.
Isn't that passport tweeted by Cohen?

It appears that the passport pic is part of Cohen's tweet.

Yes, the photo is from Cohen. So why show in now?

Really it would be very easy to prove or disprove the claim:

"special counsel Robert Mueller possesses evidence that Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, “secretly made a late-summer trip to Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign.”

This is exactly from the Steele Dossier and that is probably Mueller's "evidence."

It is well known that the CIA has captured all flight passenger records all over the world since the 1950s. They know who goes where and for how long. Cohen's travels could be tracked very easily. So why use an old photograph as if it proved anything. Just BS.

The Steele Dossier could be proven true or false very easily too. It refers to many "informants" as A, B, C, and so on. Why not get Steele, put him under oath, and demand that he reveal the identity of his sources? He would do that for the FBI, for whom he was a paid informant himself for decades. Then go to Russia and talk to the informants.

My guess is that Mueller is not talking directly to Steele because he knows the informants are made up. Steele has not been in Russia since the Yeltsin days of 1993. It is very unlikely that any of his Yeltsin cronies are close to Putin. If Putin had been cultivating Trump as a presidential mole for 5 years, Putin would keep that very secret. Only his closest advisers would know, and these people would not give Steele, a discredited corporate spook, the time of day.

RR ...[The MSN can simply make up any kind of fake news it likes]
I think you're a little confused. It is POTUS who does this ... constantly.

I don't know if the claims made in the Steele Dossier are true or not -- more importantly, neither do you. Has POTUS been giving you lessons ... or maybe Nunes on how to make claims with no evidence?

[The Mueller investigation is beginning to tear away at the fabric of US society.] Again, it's POTUS who's been doing that for years! But what's worse is now he has the bully pulpit -- which is entirely appropriate given what a bully he is.

worried -- " the claims made in the Steele Dossier are true or not -- more importantly, neither do you."

Generally in science or in logic, something is presumed false until it is proven true. The opposite is never the case -- believing something is true until it is proven false. So if we claim to be critical thinkers, we must assume the Steele Dossier is false until it is proven true. This presumption is parallel to the legal principle that someone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Nunes has made a lot of claims. They too are presumed false. He has proposed a process for determining their truth; i.e., declassify the FISA applications so we can see what they claim to the court. Why not do that?

Anyway, I provided a logical argument. I don't have any material facts but logically the Steele Dossier appears false.

It was Trump, not Comey, fixated on the prostitute allegation.

RR has made himself irrelevant here with his own fixations. Specifically, anything to do with Russia. He pontificates as though he had inside knowledge himself, but is quite obviously manufacturing verities to fit a very narrow agenda.

Correction - it was Comey who said Trump was fixated. Comey has said a lot of things that are not true. So has Trump. We have a contest between two liars. You pick the one you like.

President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen on Saturday responded to a report that special counsel Robert Mueller has evidence that Cohen went to Prague during the 2016 election, slamming it as “bad reporting.”

“Bad reporting, bad information and bad story,” Cohen tweeted, calling out the reporter behind the story by name.

“No matter how many times or ways they write it, I have never been to Prague. I was in LA with my son. Proven!”

Cohen is home free. He just hired Hillry to destroy the evidence.
