Legum writes: "Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who charged with murdering 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, honed his marksmanship skills in a school program supported by the NRA. Cruz was, according to the Associated Press, a member of the school's four-person varsity marksmanship team, which received a $10,000 grant from the NRA in 2016."

The NRA Donated $10,000 to Help Train the Parkland Shooting Suspect to Use a Rifle

He practiced on indoor ranges shooting at targets the size of coin.

ikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who charged with murdering 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, honed his marksmanship skills in a school program supported by the NRA. Cruz was, according to the Associated Press, a member of the school’s four-person varsity marksmanship team, which received a $10,000 grant from the NRA in 2016.

The marksmanship team was part of the schools’ JROTC program. On the team, Cruz trained with “air rifles special-made for target shooting, typically on indoor ranges at targets the size of a coin.”

Cruz discussed his AR-15 with other team members and was given the nickname “Wolf.” Another member of the team described him as “a very good shot.”

The NRA declined to comment on the donation. In 2015, the NRA Foundation gave $2.2 million in similar grants promoting gun use to schools around the country. This includes grants “to elementary and middle schools.”

The NRA Foundation’s website says it’s “investing in the next generation of America’s leaders” by devoting “a significant majority” of the group’s grants to “youth shooting sports.”

The NRA Foundation operates the Friends of the NRA program, which raises money for youth shooting sports as a way of recruiting young activists to fight gun regulation.

Friends of the NRA describes itself as “a 100% grassroots effort fueled by a united front to secure the Second Amendment and raise money for the shooting sports.”

The NRA has been actively commenting on the Parkland massacre on social media, arguing that the only way to prevent future tragedies is more guns.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

The terrorists among us are not the clinically insane but the politically insane such as the NRA and their enablers in the public. It's a proven myth (aka false) that myth most people with mental illness are violent – when in fact they are far more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators.
But predictable our know-nothing president is spouting those lies first chance he got, blaming the wrong people and the wrong causes.

Since there are few reasons to hunt animals for food, and few animals left living to shoot for trophies, let's just be blunt and admit that the NRA is training young people to promote gun sales and, tacitly, by putting guns in kids' hands, that it's okay for them to use guns on each other or whoever they're mad at. The second amendment is in no way related to what they are promoting - only pure profit motive by cleverly preying on some people's fears.

Add the KKK as a terrorist org. as well. How many times over their 152+ year history has no one cared when they committed a crime and got away with it? Nearly EVERY TIME! June 1964 Mississippi, Klan involvement in 3 murders; worked 4 sheriff's dept. They got away with murder; went 2 prison 4 Civil Rights violations.
I have mental health problems and I don't have a gun; don't want 2 buy a gun; don't need one; don't have the $ 4 a gun. Hated guns since 4/20/99 during senior year of HS. That day was during spring break since Patriots day was the day b4 and only ME (my home state 1982-present) ) and MA celebrate it.
