Health Care for People With Pre-Existing Conditions Is a 'Luxury'

Under the GOP's Health Plan, Sexual Assault and Rape Would Be Considered Pre-Existing Conditions

By Sarah Spellings, New York Magazine

n amendment in the GOP health-care-reform bill will allow states to deny coverage for preexisting conditions, including sexual assault.

Pre-Obamacare rape survivors who sought treatment for their injuries could be denied health care later on. Under Obamacare, preexisting conditions were guaranteed to receive coverage — among them, sexual assault. The American Health Care Act is going to change that.

The new MacArthur-Meadows Amendment will allow states to discriminate based on medical history, reportedly without addressing the subsequent high cost of health care for millions of Americans.

In addition to rape, postpartum depression, Cesarean sections, and surviving domestic violence are all considered preexisting conditions. Companies can also deny coverage for gynecological services and mammograms.

President Trump, who thinks Bill O’Reilly has done nothing wrong, has a litany of sexual harassment claims against him, and is responsible for the quote “grab ’em by the pussy,” tweeted that he will “[take] care of pre-existing conditions!”

The amendment also reads, “Nothing in this Act shall be construed as permitting health insurance issuers to discriminate in rates for health insurance coverage by gender.”

Maybe Ivanka will stand up this time and explain that the majority of people who get pregnant, are domestically abused, or are raped are women.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Well women are getting what they DESERVE. After all, 53% of white women voted for Trump and republicans COULD NOT have taken over both houses without women's votes.
I think they should send thank you letters to those they elected.
I may sound sarcastic but voters need to be accountable. Older people will pay as much as 5 times as much as young voters for healthcare premiums under this RADICAL version and then again older voters should be HAPPY and send congratulation letters to their constituents. Voters MUST OWN what they voted for!

Why do you categorize all women and say "we" got what we deserve? The "poor people" who voted for Trump didn't get what "they" deserved and neither did any other group of people.

Stop, already, with the categorizations . It's the first step to all kinds of bigotry: Muslims got what they deserve (for whatever reason); Americans will get what we deserve (for all our killing around the world); No. Koreans will get what it deserves (for developing weapons to defend themselves).

If you state that the lying destructive leaders should get what they deserve, I agree with you. But they're the ones who write the rules and the rules say you can't do anything to the people who cause it all.

Sorry femihumanist, we disagree. You are correct, I should not have said "we" implying all women -- or all men.
When it comes to poor women a large majority voted for trump and therefore deserve his policies and that would go to put women who abort IN JAIL if he could do it.... SAD...

Actually, I think trump himself is a preexisting condition. He's costing us a fortune to treat especially due to the fact that in his case, it's chronic and incurable. Lunacy is lunacy and only can be dealt with as a lifelong illness.

It's time for the people to take to the streets to demand universal health care, medicare for everybody. Obombercare is a handout to the insurance industry. Trumpcare is even worse.

"You can't give free Healthcare! That's socialism!"

"But you have roads, bridges, parks, the fire department, the police, the military, snowplows already!"

"Well you need some socialism, but I'm not paying for a bunch of poor people my insurance will go up!"

"No you just make it so that no one pays and it's just covered by the tax revenue, no more insurance companies."

"That's socialism, and our government is too corrupt! They will use it to kill us!"

"Then remove bribery and lobbying and put people in jail if they accept any cash or emoluments like every other free country does."

"How? Everyone is on the take."

"Well you better find out or your gonna lose your country."

Real conversation...

The House Republican healthcare bill does NOT make Rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence pre-existing conditions. The Sarah Spellings, New York Magazine article is false news (as are many New York Magazine articles). See
