Bernie Sanders' Supreme Court Litmus Test: Overturn Citizens United

By Eric Bradner, CNN

29 September 15

ernie Sanders said Monday that a commitment to getting big money out of politics would be his litmus test for Supreme Court nominees.

The Vermont senator and Democratic presidential contender told students at a University of Chicago Institute of Politics event that he wants to ban billionaires like conservative business moguls Charles and David Koch from influencing the outcome of elections.

"No nominee of mine to the United States Supreme Court will get that job unless he or she is loud and clear that one of their first orders of business will be to overturn citizens United," Sanders said.

He was complaining about the 2010 ruling that lifted restrictions on outside groups' spending on elections. Sanders has called for public financing of campaigns -- which means candidates would get tax dollars to spend on their efforts but wouldn't be allowed to raise and spend money otherwise.

He also took several specific shots at the Koch brothers.

He complained about their fundraising network's plans to spend more than $900 million in the 2016 election cycle to bolster conservative candidates.

And he said candidates' donors and super PACs have more influence on their campaigns than the candidates themselves.

"You are not looking at democracy, you are looking at oligarchy -- and we have got to change that," Sanders told the students in Chicago.

"I do not exaggerate when I tell you that the foundations of American democracy are being undermined," he said. "American democracy is not supposed to be about billionaires buying elections."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

So correct (per usual) you are, Bernie. Billionaires Buying Elections (BBE) is egregious, and is today's method of operating (m.o.), at national, state and local levels.

Made me want to puke: at the first open city council meeting to include newly elected members of Colorado Springs City Council, a man stood up, identified himself as representing Prosperity for America (the Koch brothers 'buy off' tool). He then ordered ("...and this is how you shall vote) rather than make a suggestion. And, what were the city council ordered to vote in favor of?

Ridding the city of any and all solar panel gardens. Koch villainaires cannot allow for any cuts in their profits, now can they, regardless of all the destruction of the atmosphere and human health their fossil fuels & fracking (FFF) are doing.

We absolutely need Citizen's United to be overturned, ASAP. The villainaires have made a revolution inevitable, and Bernie's Political Revolution is absolutely worth a try, vs. our electing another Bush, another Clinton, or a Trump the Chump, a.k.a. simply more of the same.

LET'S FEEL THE BERN & DO ALL WE CAN TO GET HIM NOMINATED THEN ELECTED, 'cause...

SANDERS PANDERS NOT, TO THE 1%

At the same time, let's sharpen the guillotine blades. Just in case.

That is why I will put my support behind someone like Bernie. Someone who stands up to our wealthy owners of America. The others Jackasses running for president would never come out and openly oppose their corporate Pimps, I mean masters.

This is why so many love Bernie; he's one of the few politicians in Congress who seems to be honest. I have never heard or read that he has become wealthy while in Congress, unlike the majority of his colleagues. He has never made any questionable statements that he had to correct or apologize for. He has been very clear that his govt. goal is to help the ENTIRE American people, not just a small segment of them. He's HONEST. Other than Liz Warren, can the same be said of any other member of Congress? I'm not talking about illegalities; I'm talking about plain HONESTY. Bernie says he's a socialist, but he is NOT a socialist in the classic sense of supporting govt. ownership of everything. This campaign will be interesting because I think the only thing Reps. can get him on will be his socialist label.

I am in full accord with what you write here [except that I question that I don't think that "the classic sense of" socialism is "supporting govt. ownership of everything,"whi ch is more like communism. I think socialism claimed that that those who make the stuff and do the work should run the business, or at least choose the managers who do . . . rather than those who merely advance the funds or, worse, inherit or buy the position. I like this, but even Bernie isn't boosting this position these days.]
That was totally irrelevant, but I hate to erase anything just because it's irrelevant at the moment. Forget it. Just vote for Bernie.

There are several of the SCOTUS that need to be ousted. The ones who voted for Citizens United should have been impeached! Bernie Sanders has great plans, I hope that we will see him as our next POTUS. I would like to see him and Liz Warren run together. As for the next Supreme Court Justice, I wonder who he has in mind?

Maybe he has Liz Warren in mind. She would be great and her confirmation would mean that she would serve for life and not be constrained by reelection.

I would add protect Roe v. Wade.

ending CU is a fine litmus for a new supreme, but it won't stop the kocks from buying 100,000 zomblican officeholders across america - never forget that it was the bad old days before CU when the kocks bought those 100,000 officeholders - how did the kocks do it before CU, when kock businesses first got to buy 100,000 officeholders? well they did it the old fashioned way! by first taking money out of their corporations! and donating it themselves, as individuals! - unfortunately the day after scotus reverses CU, the kocks will just go back to buying 100,000 officeholders the old-fashioned way!

there is only one way to end anecdotes like - # ritawalpoleague 2015-09-29 16:04 "... at the first open city council meeting to include newly elected members of Colorado Springs City Council, a man stood up, identified himself as representing Prosperity for America (the Koch brothers 'buy off' tool). He then ordered ("...and this is how you shall vote) rather than make a suggestion. And, what were the city council ordered to vote in favor of? Ridding the city of any and all solar panel gardens ..."

- the one way to end kock-owned politicians is public funding, only, of all federal, state and local elections - and until scotus is ready to declare public funding constitutional, which it may never do, we need a constitutional amendment to do that - bernie has promised to move congress in that direction this coming spring - go bernie!
