US Replenishes Israel's Arsenal With $1.9 Billion in New Weapons

By Paul Gottinger, Reader Supported News

23 May 15

his week the U.S. State Department approved almost $1.9 billion in new weapons for Israel. The approval comes just weeks after the Israeli rights group Breaking the Silence collected reports of possible violations of international law during Israel’s 2014 “Operation Protective Edge” in Gaza.

The weapons sale includes 14,500 kits to upgrade “dumb” bombs into precision-guided munitions, over 12,000 unguided bombs, and 50 Super Penetrator “bunker buster” bombs, designed to hit targets underground.

Also approved for sale were over 3,000 hellfire missiles, which the U.S. briefly withheld from Israel following last summer’s attack on Gaza. The 50-day assault killed over 2,200 people, most of whom were civilians.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated in its announcement of the arms sale that “the United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability.”

“These munitions will enable Israel to maintain operational capability of its existing systems and will enhance Israel’s interoperability with the United States,” the agency said in the statement.

“These are weapons that Israel already has in its arsenal, and this shipment will help replenish the stock depleted by last year’s Gaza operation,” Gerald Steinberg, political science professor at Bar Ilan University told Bloomberg.

The sale still awaits Congressional review. However, U.S. weapons sales to Israel have very rarely run into difficulty passing though Congress.

The sale is to be funded through U.S.Foreign Military Financing grants. TheUnited States provides Israel with over $3 billion a year in Foreign Military Financing, which accounts for almost a quarter of Israel’s total defense budget. The Congressional Research Service report onU.S. aid to Israel states, “U.S. military aid has helped transform Israel’s armed forces into one of the most technologically sophisticated militaries in the world.”

Critics of U.S. military assistance to Israel have raised concerns about the sale, given possible violations of international law committed by the Israeli military during last year’s attack on Gaza. U.S. law prohibits providing military assistance to countries that engage in human rights violations.

report from last summer found that the U.S. supplied Israel with many of the same types of weapons that were used in “Operation Protective Edge,” and an Amnesty International report last December stated that a number of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza amounted to war crimes. Amnesty also documented cases of the Israeli military attacking hospitals and health workers.

The latest allegations of war crimes came earlier this month when Israeli soldiers gave anonymous testimony about their experience in the 2014 war in Gaza.

The testimonies allege that the Israeli military didn’t institute basic measures to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza. According to the testimony, Israeli soldiers were told to regard anything in Gaza as a “threat” and told that they should “not spare ammo.”

In one testimony, a staff sergeant with the mechanized infantry unit stated,

The saying was: “There’s no such thing there as a person who is uninvolved.” In that situation, anyone there is involved. Everything is dangerous; there were no special intelligence warnings such as some person, or some white vehicle arriving … No vehicle is supposed to be there – if there is one, we shoot at it. Anything that’s not “sterile” is suspect.

Other testimonies allege that tanks fired randomly or for revenge on buildings without regard for civilians who might be inside. The testimonies also describe Israeli soldiers looting Gazan’s homes and engaging in arbitrary property destruction. In one instance, an individual describes running over cars with tanks.

Perhaps most troubling was the testimony given by a sergeant first class in the Israeli Combat Intelligence Collection Corps. The sergeant stated that during debriefings the destruction waged on Gaza was referred to as “accomplishments.”

You could say they went over most of the things viewed as accomplishments. They spoke about numbers: 2,000 dead and 11,000 wounded, half a million refugees, decades worth of destruction. Harm to lots of senior Hamas members and to their homes, to their families. These were stated as accomplishments so that no one would doubt that what we did during this period was meaningful.

The State Department’s announcement of this unusually large arms sale is likely meant to reassure Israel over its concerns about the U.S.-Iranian nuclear agreement.

“The timing certainly has the appearance of calming Israeli fears about Iran,” Gerald Steinberg said.

Yiftah Shapir, who heads the Middle East Military Balance project at Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies, agreed. He told Bloomberg, “There’s no doubt that packaging them all together in one sale, and announcing it now, is clearly linked to the Iran agreement.”

Haaretz reported earlier this week that the U.S. has quietly made plans to provide compensation to Israel if the U.S. and Iran reach an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Haaretz, this compensation includes F-35 stealth fighters, missile defense systems, and other unknown military materials. The U.S. and Israel have already agreed that Israel will buy 33 F-35s at $110 million apiece. The first planes are set to arrive in 2016. However, the Israeli military is seeking a total of 50 F-35s.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

You're the delusional one -and sooooo predictable.

So: -the US funds Israel -and cite one example of Iranian missiles being launched from ANY source against Israel. But MOSSAD has boasted about incursions into Iran in which they have targeted and murdered at least nine Iranian scientists and Israel has overflown and threatened Iranian air space several times, once quite recently post 2014 conflict.
And yet Iran has yet to develop a nuclear weapon, whereas both Israel and the US are top and close to it in WMD production and dealing.
Ever heard the expression "What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander"?
And DO try to look at the body counts of Palestinian civilians, children, women and elderly included and Israeli mostly military.

The number of despotic nations that the US has armed, trained, supported and overthrown opposition to for it's own military/ corporate gain is WAY to many to count on any human set of fingers; or several, if that's your abacus of choice.

This is such an outrage to spend so much when so many are suffering here!!!!! Our govt's priorities are clearly not about helping us, They never come up with funds to help the 50 million American children who are living in poverty but the Feds just print up money to give to the banks and then the banks just keep it. The whole thing makes me sick. The middle class, seniors, students , mothers and children, getting affordable health care and just putting healthy food on the table is a struggle for tens of thousands of Americans! Our Infrastructure is falling apart, cities are going bankrupt and people are losing their pensions. Medicare and Social Security are on the chopping block thanks to our sold out GOP and we are giving Israel over a billion dollars!!!!

+32 # futhark 2015-05-23 18:49
The whole concept of "national security" needs to be reexamined. Maintaining an enormous military, buying "allies" with oppressive regimes using arms paid for by U.S. taxpayers, and extending the powers of the state surveillance apparatus do nothing but draw resources away from the essentials Vardoz enumerates. Hungry, sick, and ill-educated people are not getting much security out of the current system. For that matter, almost no one that is not employed directly by the military, in the weapons industry, or the spying systems has their real long-term security enhanced.

+24 # wantrealdemocracy 2015-05-23 20:27
Vardoz explains the awfulness of our government--but it is really worse than she/he knows. It is not "thanks to our sold out GOP" that all this awfulness is happening. It should be clear to all of us that both of our major political parties are screwing the working people (or used to be working) of our nation. The whole thing makes me sick too and I think our only hope of getting any kind of a fair deal for 99% of our citizens is to get out on the streets and do as Mario Salvio told us years ago. He said we have to STOP THE MACHINE that is killing us. We need to do all we can to stop that machine. We need to throw our bodies on the wheels and the levers of that machine until it STOPS! It is time for a rebellion. Stop sending our tax funds to Israel and take care of things here in our nation. Who are those people in Congress? Do they all put Israel first? Aren't there any loyal Americans there? Are they all Zionists?

+6 # NAVYVET 2015-05-24 07:10
The purpose behind arming the police with WMDs is to make sure that anyone who lies down before the machine gets shot in the head and then run over by a megaton machine. Pure intimidation. I am 79 years old, have worked for peace and justice since I can remember. Since the second World War ended, and we began regretting the loss of Hitler and Tojo as role models, with a few exceptions--the civil rights movement, the environmental outcry--it's been a gradual takeover by the Morlocks.

Everyone, except Kalpal apparently, knows that Saudi Arabia started (recruited, trained, funded) ISIS and has only recently backed away from them out of fear of what they created. ISIS's tirades against the Saudis because of their alliance with the US have matched the tirades by Al Qaeda (including by Osama bin Laden while he was alive). And the Saudis turned against bin Laden too, but only much later on, after Al Qaeda was a going concern and gave us 9/11.

A mere glimpse of Israel in action with US sourced aircraft, missiles and other assorted ultra-sophistic ated weaponry:

According to the United Nations, as of 4 August 2014, during Israel's Operation Protective Edge's land/air/sea assault against the defenseless Palestinians of the Gaza Strip (the world's largest outdoor prison), at least 122 families had lost three or more family members since Israel began its assault in July.

Entire Palestinian families were soon WIPED OUT by Israel. Some examples:
– 25 members of the Abu Jamea family, including 18 children.
– 20 members of the Al-Najar family, including 11 children.
– 18 members of the al-Batsh family, including 6 children.
– 16 members of the Abu Jabber family, including 4 children.
– 13 members of the al-Agha family, including 4 children.
– 11 members of the Balata family, including 4 children.
– 11 members of the Hilo family (# of children not reported).
– 10 members of the al-Ghoul family, including 3 children.
– 10 members of the al-Astal family, including 3 children.
– 10 members of the al-Qassas family, including 6 children.
– at least 111 other families who lost 3-9 family members.

In short, since 1948, corrupt immoral US politicians and un/misinformed taxpayers have financed (now well over $5 billion per year) the creation of a murderous, monster, expansionist fascist state in historic Palestine. Where will it end?

If Hamas was elected to govern Gaza by the populace, how innocent is the populace when Gaza exploits it as human shields? Did Hamas ever warn anyone before attacking Israel?
Did Hamas forbid the residents from building bomb shelters? Did Hamas ever make any effort to insure that civilians living in Israel are not harmed during its terroristic actions?

Hamas lacking comptence is no excuse. We all know they will improve in their attempts to eradicate Israel and murder every Jew on the face of the earth as stated in its charter.

The only problem I see is that many Jews decline to allow Hamas to murder them. Maybe you can help Hamas achieve its goals?

Personally I find that Muslim death cults like Hamas should be aided to achieve their goals and go to heaven so as to have sex with young boys or dark eyed houris.

Just a note that this article might confuse people into thinking the testimonies about Israeli atrocities cited here were provided by Amnesty International.

They were not.

I was deeply disappointed when I saw the AI report on Israel's 2014 murderous "lawn mowing." The report played the "fair and balanced" BS of "atrocities were committed by both sides" so heavily that it appeared the two sides were equally culpable.

They literally simply took Israel's word at face value because Israel would not permit them entry to Gaza to study the evidence and interview the survivors.

Fighting, Supplying and Bleeding for other people's issues (OIL) is UN-American and serves NO purpose other than to fan the flames of animus among those we are horrifying at the moment! Can we NEVER learn from History?

It's refreshing to see so many people who know what's going on and want our dollars spent for our needs here at home, and not for arming Israel more and more. I agree with the person who said that all the involved persons in the war crimes committed by Israel (that means members of government in the US AND Israel) belonged in jail. You said it!

Tzipi Hotovely gives speech to Israeli diplomats in which she says she will try to achieve global recognition for West Bank settlements
Israel’s new deputy foreign minister on Thursday delivered a defiant message to the international community, saying that Israel owes no apologies for its policies in the Holy Land and citing religious texts to back her belief that it belongs to the Jewish people
Says it all, IMHO.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu insults our president. The Republicans claim that we don't support Israel. Israel claims that if we don't back the ISRAELI agenda, we are anti-semites. The Arab world distrusts us and our claims to be the "honest broker" that we think we are.

What a tangled web we weave...

Don't actions still speak louder than words?

Maybe if we stopped funding Israel's war crimes we could "afford" to feed our own hungry or repair our own crumbling roads and bridges. Priorities, people!

too disgusting for words

Another of those all-too-frequen t "US commitment to Israel" stories our government loves to make.

$1.9 billion in addition to the $3.8 billion in aid is more than a "commitment." It's repaying Israel for the lobby money that buys US elections.

What might Americans have done with nearly $5 billion invested in the USA? Are Americans happy supporting a leader with weapons we saw used to kill 2000 Palestinians less than a year ago?

No matter what happens in the middle east, the ones who obsessively hate Jews will keep on hating and will hope that the Muslims massacre them all. They may claim they are opposed to Zionists but that is like being pro Catholics but anti-Vatican.

As soon as some Palestinians who are not pro Islamic death cults take power and are willing to achieve a peace treaty, there will be a bright future in the middle east. Currently I see Muslims who seek to attain a place in heaven where they have access to young boys and dark eyed houris who provide them with all the sex they ever desire.

@Palsied-Kalsy:
You knuckle-draggin g LIKUD'ists never give up do you?
I can just feel y'r hate glands phuttin'!
Did you read my earlier riposte to y'r deluded ravings?
If not, heah' tis again; NOW PAY ATTENTION, you naghty thing you, or you'll go into the corner currently occupied by "Stannadel", with a red bum for ignoring teacher and lobbing spitballs into RSN!
I repeat "You mean the Christian "Rapture" in which all but true, lockstep, unquestioning, unthinking dumbkopfs are itching to have the entire Middle East "Holy Land" -and even the rest of the Mother Planet, reduced to ashes so that their version of Jesus will descend and cherry-pick them only to their pie-in-the-sky, whilst the rest of us perish in agony, is any more fantastical or delusional?
You 'n them better watch what you wish or pray for; that "reduced to ashes" bit is looking ever more likely as the "Doomsday Clock" moves another couple of notches towards Nuclear nightfall -and it won't be Palestine or Iran that'll bring it on!

Just to add my comment under my own name, that Israel, the US, and Canada (under Stephen Harper's government) are jointly responsible for this obscene horror and should be charged together by the International Criminal Court and/or condemned together by the UN. Come get me Mr. Harper. Under your new security law you can probably do it. But your time is almost up. Alberta threw your party out three weeks ago, and the whole country will throw you out in the upcoming federal election. I hate living in a war criminal country, Mr. Harper.

Now Israel can finish the job of genocide in the Gaza Strip with complete impunity, and to completely take over the West Bank. There is no justice in this world other than what the United States defines as justice. The U.N. and its agencies have become useless organizations limited to what the U.S. will allow them to do.

Amazing how subservient a country can be to Israel's assassination plans of the entire Palestinian people; how very Christian.

Didn't I read that U.S. law prohibits providing military assistance to countries that engage in human rights violations? Does this mean no military assistance to Israel or to itself? Hmmm... How about that!!

KALPAL - you seem a little obsessed about Muslims having sex with young boys. I sense a guilty conscience showing in your rants. "thou doth protest too loudly".
