Mass Grave of Dead Babies in Ireland Used as Guinea Pigs for Pharmaceutical Company

By Harriet Arkell, Neil Michael, The Daily Mail

08 June 14

cientists secretly vaccinated more than 2,000 children in religious-run homes in suspected illegal drug trials, it emerged today.

Old medical records show that 2,051 children and babies in Irish care homes were given a one-shot diphtheria vaccine for international drugs giant Burroughs Wellcome between 1930 and 1936.

There is no evidence that consent was ever sought, nor any records of how many may have died or suffered debilitating side-effects as a result.

The scandal was revealed as Irish premier, Enda Kenny, ordered ministers to see whether there are more mass baby graves after the discovery that 800 infants may be buried in a septic tank outside a former mother and baby home in Tuam, Co. Galway.

Children at Sean Ross Abbey in Tipperary are thought to have been used in secret drug trials in the 1930s

Children's homes are under the spotlight since it emerged that 796 babies may be buried at the former mother and baby home at Tuam, Co. Galway - Enda Kenny has ordered officials to see if other mass graves exist

The Irish premier has ordered his officials to examine the possibility that there may be other mass graves, too

The Taioseach intervened from the United States yesterday to say that he had ordered his officials to 'see what the scale is, what's involved here, and whether this is isolated or if there are others around the country that need to be looked at.'

Michael Dwyer, of Cork University’s School of History, found the child vaccination data by trawling through tens of thousands of medical journal articles and archive files.

He discovered that the trials were carried out before the vaccine was made available for commercial use in the UK.

Homes where children were secretly tested included Bessborough, in Co. Cork and Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, both of which are at the centre of the mass baby graves scandal.

Other institutions where children may also have been vaccinated include Cork orphanages St Joseph’s Industrial School for Boys, run by the Presentation Brothers, and St Finbarr’s Industrial School for Girls, run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.

In Dublin, it is believed that children for the trials came from St Vincent’s Industrial School, Goldenbridge, St Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys, Cabra, and St Saviours’s Dominican Orphanage.

But Mr Dwyer said: 'What I have found is just the tip of a very large and submerged iceberg.

'The fact that no record of these trials can be found in the files relating to the Department of Local Government and Public Health, the Municipal Health Reports relating to Cork and Dublin, or the Wellcome Archives in London, suggests that vaccine trials would not have been acceptable to government, municipal authorities, or the general public.

'However, the fact that reports of these trials were published in the most prestigious medical journals suggests that this type of human experimentation was largely accepted by medical practitioners and facilitated by authorities in charge of children’s residential institutions.'

Horror: The scandal of the babies in the mass grave was discovered by local historian, Catherine Corless

Innocence: Academic Michael Dwyer found out about the secret drugs trials by going through old medical records - children from the Sean Ross Abbey home in Tipperary, pictured, are thought to have been involved

A spokesman for GSK – formerly Wellcome – said: 'The activities that have been described to us date back over 70 years and, if true, are clearly very distressing.

'We would need further details to investigate what actually took place, but the practices outlined certainly don’t reflect how modern clinical trials are carried out. We conduct our trials to the same high scientific and ethical standards, no matter where in the world they are run.'

A spokeswoman for the Sisters of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the order that ran Bessborough and Sean Ross Abbey, said that like GSK, they would also welcome an independent inquiry.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin called on the Irish government to add vaccine trials into the investigative remit of any inquiry into the mother and baby homes.

He said: 'We need to start with an independent investigation into the mother and baby homes which would be followed by a wider separate investigation into the vaccine testing.'

Historian Catherine Corless, whose discovery of the suspected mass baby grave at Tuam was revealed by the Mail earlier this week, said her study of death records for the St Mary's home run by Catholic Bon Secours nuns from 1925-1961 pointed to the existence of the mass grave.

Children's homes in Ireland were often the only place where a woman pregnant out of wedlock could go

Children were looked after by nuns and often adopted abroad - now it seems they were used in drugs trials, too

The Irish PM interrupted a trade visit to San Francisco to order an inquiry in the Tuam home and others, saying that Dublin must decide what is the 'best thing to do in the interest of dealing with yet another element of our country's past.'

St Mary's was one of several such 'mother and baby' homes for 'fallen women' who had become pregnant outside marriage in early 20th century Ireland.

Another such institution was the Sean Ross Abbey in Tipperary, was where Philomena Lee gave up her son for adoption in the 1950s. Her story was made into the Oscar-nominated film 'Philomena' last year.

The 'mother and baby' homes accommodated women who were ostracised from their own families and had nowhere else to turn.

Under conservative Catholic teaching of the time, children born outside of marriage were not baptised and were therefore denied a Catholic burial on consecrated ground.

I'd like to, once again, run screaming from the room in frustration and anger.

This is not the first time viable human beings have been used as experimental animals without their knowledge. In the U.S. military people have been used, whether to witness atomic tests, being given medications, and more. Women have been sterilized, and we are now witnessing medications advertised that have not been thoroughly tested, with obvious results.

Babies and children have no say in anything much less being suspicious of what they are being infected with.

--- When I was a kid, I lived in a poor neighborhood in the Greater Boston area. The children in my school were used as guinea pigs for polio testing. No one told our parents about it, no one asked us kids whether or not we wanted to participate. We were rounded up, herded into the cafeteria, on more than one occasion, and inoculated either by shots or orally with a clear liquid in a teaspoon full of sugar. A decade later, they tracked me down and ordered me to appear in some clinic for evaluation. I told them to stuff it. By then I was sixteen or seventeen. They hounded, harassed and abused my but I stood my ground. I told them the next time they had some experiment, they needed to talk to ME first and get MY PERMISSION. They were furious. My response to this day? ... TOUGH! I was also in the military (Navy) they were doing the same things there, too. It was the main reason I got out and never re-upped. These corporations have real nerve. They are so convinced they have the right to do anything to anyone at any time. Between them and these (corporate) churches, we had better keep a vigilant watch; they're nutz!

Good that you were tough enough to stand up to an industry with too much power. Your story is not unusual, sad to say, in spite of folks being suspicious of these events actually happening. Also good that you were on top of your military experience.

What year were you given polio injections and the liquid form? It is possible that was the case with 100's of kids. The injections were first, so I'm wondering why the liquid form of the medication was put out at the same time. Jonas Salk, and Sabin evidently were in a bit of competition.

Quite quickly, after we started discussing this book online, I think on HP, Bill Frist (remember him, the kitten torturer in congress and HMO investor) hurriedly rammed through the bill that prevents the suing of any pharmaceutical company for anything involving or related to vaccines.

The Nazis were somewhat astonished at the horror portrayed by the Allies who learned of Nazi experiments. For example no-one had raised an eyebrow at the syphilis experiments on the Tuskegee blacks begun in 1932 (up to the '70s) where the victims thought they were being given super health care and could not understand why so many innocent people were getting syphilis. There is the 200-yr-old history of Canadian abuse of native children - in the 1920s it was voiced as 'to kill the Indian in the child' but denied denied denied until now ... When you start looking into these things you find similar stories everywhere, all religions or none. Maybe even now these things are still going on - either no-one's listening or secrecy is working?

Wow! The Catholic Church; the gift that just keeps on giving!!! If it isn't modern day pedophilia, it's the child labor camps in Australia that built all of the RCC church buildings and complexes, or it's the mission homes that had rampant physical, emotional and sexual abuses of Native Indigenous children and now this with the Irish children. O...M...G...!!!

One thing is becoming EXTREMELY clear is that the RCC has little or no use for children!!! So much for organized religion. Down with the Catholic Church!

Well,well...the 100 year "Religious" holocaust against children is finally being revealed. And as mentioned; "only tip of the iceberg." Only indeed. Dear readers I refer you to the work of the International Common Law Court's recent indictments of murder, rape and torture of some 30 defendants including then-Pope Benedict, Elizabeth Windsor (Queen of England), Stephen Harper (Canadian Prime Minister) and others within the Church councils in Canada. The evidence of countless mass graves (50,000)is still being uncovered

Saw this on the BBC website a few days ago.
So-the Nazi Scientists had some precedence for their human experiments?
To piggyback on "ricardo's" post, the "Black Robes" did much the same to the native children of this continent until relatively recently, ripping them away from their tribal homes, cutting their hair, forbidding them to speak their own languages and brutally whipping them or worse for doing things they didn't even understand were "wrong".
Very Christ-like indeed; wonder how they managed to rationalize all this in the Church of Jesus and Mary, where Mary was the God-Mother and principal figure?

Okay, the fact of a drug trial taking place under such conditions is abhorrent. I think we can agree on that.

That said, there are, according to the article "no records" concerning the trial and any follow-up. We have no way, apparently, of determining whether any harm was done. Further investigation may develop evidence, but thus far, it does not appear to have.

Then we read that "800 infants MAY BE buried inside a septic tank". Has anyone dug it up to see? Is there any connection between this and the vaccination test? We are not told. If proven true, this is a horror (though hardly unique among Catholic orphanages, "industrial schools", etc.). But could we wait until there is some evidence before going off?

What did Catherine Corless discover? That might be worthy of a story in and of itself.

This piece is full of unsubstantiated allegations which are in the process of being investigated. Once they are, THAT would be the time to report on the results. As it is, all we have is a reasonable belief that 2000 children were given a diphtheria vaccine under unethical conditions. Which, for all we know, may have prevented some of them from dying of diphtheria. The article does not say.

+17 # Glen 2014-06-08 12:27
The first report I read on this did declare the bones/bodies were indeed found in the tank. Perhaps the word 'may' is used here prior to possible identification.

There is no doubt the treatment of children there, and in other countries, have been used, abused, and killed. Thousands of children throughout history have been unwanted or left orphans for dozens of reasons. I will never be surprised at anything reported on relative to the subject.

Dave M is right. We don’t know enough to draw conclusions, only enough to ask questions.

If babies whose mothers had left the mother and baby homes were used as guinea pigs, that is a horrendous crime against those children. But what if the story was like this:

Burroughs Wellcome tells new mothers that if they allow their babies to get an inoculation, they will be paid a shilling. Half the babies will be injected with water, in which case the child will have the same protection as every other child in Ireland, and half with the new drug, which will either be harmless (a possible lie) or will protect the child from diphtheria. If this is what happened, there would be no need to maintain exact records of each baby but rather just tallies of how many of the water babies got diphtheria and how many of the trial drug babies. It is still shoddy to use people who are desperately poor in this way but it is not as evil as the story suggests may have been the case.

The dead infants might have died because they got the water shots and then diphtheria, or because they were sick from something else, or because the drugs were faulty and killed them. At this point, we don’t know.

As for the nuns, instead of seeing them as co-conspirators in the wanton murder of infants, perhaps they were told basically the same story. They could well have thought they were helping not only the children in their care but children all across the British Empire.

0 # bmiluski 2014-06-09 08:29
They must have been very stupid nuns indeed not to notice the death rate amongst the ones inoculated. But then that's not suprising when it has to do with "religious" people.

Those who knew and said nothing of which there must be many, are at least as much to blame.

As a fallen Catholic, I'm horrified that my childhood suspicions were warranted. At sixteen an incident happened that involved my family and the local church when I saw the disingenuous response by the priests we dealt with. I never again went back to church as I was an astute perceiver that their concerns were not for my family but whether or not we were real parishioners since we did not officially contribute financially, when we were there for some financial aid or food.

I then saw similar practices in almost all organized religions and I shun them all equally. It was very freeing and rejuvenating to shed the dogma of them all.

There was nothing experimental about children over 5 receiving diphtheria vaccine by the 1930s, and though some places hadn't yet approved it for babies it was a lifesaver for them, too. The Irish nun homes were dreadful & the shots may have been illegal, but children who got diphtheria vaccinations were better off than me. Developed around WWI to fight the 3rd-ranked disease-caused killer of children, the vaccine was declared effective and safe in the 1920s. School children began to be vaccinated in 1930 & cases of infection dropped. The vaccine was a blessing to parents and children. I was born in 1936, wasn't vaccinated as a baby and & got diphtheria in 1938. Where we lived the vaccine was still considered "experimental" for children under 5. Although other regions permitted it we lived in the wrong place. I nearly died, and would have except that my pediatrician (Dr Burgess, bless him) obtained sulfanilomide for me--at a time when the first important antibiotic was considered problematic for young children. It saved my life, but even in her 80s my mother still had occasional nightmares of a church, a small coffin with a little redhaired girl, and would wake up crying. A vaccination would have prevented that--and also the 6-month shutdown of all physical activity for me following my recovery, based on the myth that any exercise after diphtheria caused rheumatic heart disease. O you antivax fools! I wish you could abandon sensationalist myths and learn genuine science!

Horrendous as this revelation is, it does not surprise me. In my doctoral research I discovered that babies taken for adoption (including my own) in the 1950s and '60s were used for experimentation . Of course, this was vociferously denied by those who knew about this practice.

Is there any evidence the children were actually harmed by the vaccine? Is there any link between the vaccinations & the mass grave?

Infant mortality was still quite high in the 1930s. Is there any evidence the mass grave is anything other than a potter's field?

+1 # NAVYVET 2014-06-09 14:22
See my reply, above. At age 2, in the U.S., I almost died of diphtheria, due to sluggish policy rules that didn't allow vaccinating for that terrible disease till a child entered school. Infant mortality was still high because only one antibiotic, sulfa, to which many people are allergic, had been approved. Penicillin was under development in the late 30s, but it too is hardly ever used any more because of allergies. I think most of the other antibiotics weren't yet underway, but I could be wrong.
I'd think that children's remains in a nunnery privy would be indicative of wrongdoing & coverup--but I'll wait for some legal evidence as to whether the vaccinations were illegal or legal, and who was involved--if anyone. Maybe it's only rumors. Unless it was aberrant vaccine, there could only have been benefit to the children. Perhaps giving these tragic little ones useful lifesaving shots may have been the only GOOD thing that was done for them. Nowadays children in the U.S. are at high risk again because Big Ag/Big Pharm are radically overusing antibiotics, making them useless in some cases, and also because vaccinating is no longer mandatory, as it was when I was little. The anti-vaccinatio n True Believers, who remind me of the John Birchers and Tea Party, are keeping children unvaccinated and allowing them to become Typhoid Marys at schools or, even worse, very ill, sometimes fatally. (But New Agers have to have their thousands of quack snakeoil myths.)

I am no fan of religion, and particularly not a fan of the Roman Catholic Church. It's the last remnant of the Roman Empire. Don't forget that "Pope" is "Pontifex Maximus" - Latin for the High Priest of Rome.

Julius Caesar once held the office.

And yeah, I agree "children's remains in a nunnery privy" would be a bad thing indeed.

Still, that's not how I read the story.

It was a home for unwed mothers & an associated orphanage that was run by nuns; in operation for at least 35 years and possibly decades longer.

It's obvious that the pharmaceutical company who tested their vaccine on those kids did not follow modern testing protocols in regard to informed consent. But it also happened 90 years ago.

Conditions in those homes were certainly Dickensian, but is there any evidence the children were deliberately harmed?

Is there any evidence the children were harmed by the vaccinations?

Is there any evidence the children in that "mass grave" were put there because of the vaccination testing, and not by the childhood diseases those vaccines are supposed to prevent?

I think the author is trying to imply that the church murdered those children, but the facts I'm aware of just don't support that conclusion.

If there's evidence of wrong doing, the author should produce it, not just promote another hysterical witch hunt.

In the 1970's I met a former Catholic Priest turned evangelical minister. He told us about babies in mass graves and bodies buried in mortar in construction projects of monasteries and orphanages. At the time I thought the stories were part of the rhetorical rivalry between demoninations and couldn't be true. Shortly thereafter I embarked on an education and ultimately left the church because I couldn't stand the hypocrisy.

Whoa! You're speaking of child ritual sacrifice. SKEPTICISM is the best thing ever invented--but it needs to be used! The ex-priest did have reasons to bad-mouth, so watch out. I'm not Jewish or Catholic, never was, and have no intention to be--but that preacher was reporting tales identical to the hysterically-im agined murders of Christian children which pre-20th century Christians blamed on Jews and 20th century Nazis whipped up again. Like devil-worship, child sacrifice stories in recent times are 99.99% phony.
Ritual child sacrifice to placate the gods happened in some places in the ancient pagan world, although probably exaggerated for horror. As a historian I doubt that children were ritually murdered by more than a minutely small percentage of even the most fanatic psycho Christians or Jews, the same kind of loonies who may nowadays be saying the same of Muslims! It's an old, old slander. I'm beginning to wonder about the Irish story, too. After seeing THE MAGDALENE SISTERS it seemed possible--but I'll check with Snopes.

I'd like to sit down and have a cup of coffee with Pope Francis. Have a few questions I'd like answered. Do you think he'd give me the old "Humans have flaws; the Church must try to instill the knowledge of how to avoid sin."

I am Chiricahua Apache and a medical researcher. In the United States, medical experimentation , without proper informed consent, was commonly performed on Indian reservations. Also, thousands of Native women were sterilized without consent. Let us never forget!

Not child sacrifice... covering up for pregnant nuns with abortions. It's not the first time I've heard of fetus skeletons hidden on catholic sites. This is an institution that has covered up for child molester priests; over and over. Hard not to think there could be other things going on.
