Congressional Black Caucus Demands Issa Be Removed As Committee Chair

By Rebecca Leber, ThinkProgress

07 March 14

t a House hearing yesterday, Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) cut the mic of Democratic Ranking Member Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), fueling the Congressional Black Caucus to demand Issa face punishment for his "unequivocally unacceptable" actions.

Writing on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) said House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) should reprimand Issa and strip him of his chairmanship.

Boehner has no plans to condemn the fellow Republican. "I think he was within his rights to do what he did," Boehner told reporters Thursday. "Darrell Issa is the chairman, he's been an effective chairman, and I support him." But Fudge argued, "The abuse of authority and misuse of the Congressional privileges afforded them are an affront to the expectations of the American public. Congressman Darrell Issa of California abused his authority and therefore must be reprimanded to ensure the dignity of the House of Representatives is preserved."

The letter points out that not only were Issa's actions "deplorable" and a "disgrace" but he also violated Oversight Committee rules and the rules of the House. Those rules maintain all members shall be treated and act with an integrity and behavior "that reflects creditably on the House," and that each member is allotted a full 5 minutes to question a witness. Issa adjourned the committee before Cummings could question the witness at the hearing about the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of tax-exempt status groups.

Issa defended his behavior after the hearing, saying that Cummings "was actually slandering me at the moment that the mics did go off by claiming that this had not been a real investigation."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

There is a sign of real power; the Reps. don't have to listen to the truth when it's told, they only have to shut off the mike. They can call truth slandering. They can be unthinkably rude to their colleagues; they can deny their colleagues the right to question witnesses. Dems must make clear to everyone the growing anti-democratic nature of Reps. in Congress and they need to ask the public if we REALLY want a country where one political party can ride roughshod over the other with barely a murmur of protest. I've said before that the U.S. may well turn mildly fascist if the Reps. ever again gain the majority in both Houses and the presidency; public schools with remain unfunded, the right to vote will be rescinded, abortion and birth control will become illegal, creationism will entirely replace science, wages and salaries will remain as low as CEO's and bosses want to make them, jobs will continue to go to Africa and SE Asia, unemployment will remain high, prices will rise and unions will disappear. Ask your Rep. friends, is this a country they really want to live in?

I agree with all you said, tswhiskers, but I would sadly point out that we, as a country, are already more than mildly fascist. Still, without doubt, it could be a whole lot worse ... and it will be if the Rs take full control.

Darrell Issa is a thug. He doesn't belong in any legislative body, because he demands power, not deliberation and debate. His district does have an active Democratic constituency, but they have not been able to outvote the Fox-crazed contingent. His behavior against Elijah Cummings is an abomination and an affront to today's American principles, straight out of Ol' Dixie.

Issa is my (fake) representative (small "r" to indicate my disdain for him and the blatant lack of representation by him to our district). We are the result of re-districting, which was a good thing in CA in this case because it combined the iron-clad Gerrymandered district of Duke Cunningham and its neighboring district held by a turn-coat, carpet bagger Repub (who lost re-election). We now have a new district with a glimmer of hope for change but Issa has an unlimited pile of $$$. I challenge him at townhalls, which he almost NEVER holds, to point I am removed from the room, but I could not imagine how to find the financial support to mount a campaign against him. The Dem party is not interested in blowing resources in a "safe R district." Even though he is probably corrupt, an offense to our republic and obviously not doing his job.

Not being a history buff, I wonder if we are in a state in which we have the most Republican Cabinet of any president ever elected under a Democratic ticket.

That spectacle looked awful. I really felt bad for Cummings because Issa openly disrespected him like that on TV. I'm glad that Issa later was forced to apologize.

A "Forced" apology is NO apology! Issa is unqualified as a Human Being, let alone, a Representative in the people's House of Congress! How DARE he behave like an Imperial Bully towards a better man than he? Out, NOW!

Yeah I agree that a "forced apology" is fake. But it's up to the voters in his district throw Issa out. Unfortunately his district is probably the most Republican in Southern California, if not all of California.

Issa is one of the most wealthy multimillionair e racist in the Congress. Why do I say this? Look at the way he treated a black man fellow congressperson in front of the whole world. He went on Fox to get some support which did not take away what he did. I am a older white male and I know how some of the white culture treats black men. The racist part of the Republican party likes to energize the far right base by acting this way against black men including Obama. Issa should be removed immediately if the Republican party has any ethics left which I doubt that they do. The GOP should apologize to Congressperson Cummings and the whole country should put Mr Cummings back as the head of the committee.

Not because Representative Cummings is Black and NOT because he is a member of the Minority Party in the House, but BECAUSE Darrell Issa is ill-equipped to Chair ANY committee or qualified to hold ANY position above Janitor! He has shown himself to be a Bully, a Criminal and unable to respect, if not the man, the Position that Congressman Cummings holds! He acted more like the ReTHUGlicans current Poster boy, Vladimir Putin, than an American Congressman! The Congressional Black caucus is RIGHT. Remove this power mad Cretin and replace him with someone who actually LOVES this Country and ALL it has to offer, not just to the Rich, but EVERYONE!

Please don't castigate janitors! Issa, Boehner, Cantor and a host of others need to be removed from the Congress. They are guilt of violating their oath of office which is to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the U.S. Their behavior, especially over the past 5 years, is reprehensible. However, the people who have cast a vote to permit these "slugs" to be in office are equally reprehensible for returning them to these positions of "leadership."

Your RIGHT, Art947! I apologize to ALL Janitors and working people everywhere in this Nation who have to suffer these incompetent Fools who REFUSE to do the job they were elected to do!
