Westboro Baptist Church Planning to Picket Newtown Funerals

By Emma Riley Sutton, The Examiner

18 December 12

ess than 48 hours after the Connecticut school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, which took place on Dec. 14, the Westboro Baptist Church is already making plans to picket. The Westboro Baptist Church is known for picketing and protesting at funerals across the country.

"Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment," Shirley Phelps-Roper tweeted on Dec. 15.

"They need to come back to Oklahoma," Bryan Weathers, from Moore, said. "We know how to take care of them here."

"Westboro 'God hates Fags' Baptist Church is planning to picket at Sandy Hook, to praise 'God's judgment,'" Margie Phelps tweeted as well on Dec. 15.

Westoboro Baptist Church is known for carrying signs that read "Thank God for dead babies" and the like. It is unknown what kind of signs will be seen, if the Westboro Baptist Church actually pickets in Newtown, CT.

The Supreme Court ruled that it is legal for the Westboro Baptist Church to picket funerals. Despite that ruling, many cities and towns have passed laws that force the Westboro Baptist Church to stay a specific distance away from funerals. your social media marketing partner

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Really? This cruelty is what God wants? It is hard to fathom how people who call themselves Christians treat grieving families with such a profound lack of compassion.
+30 # RLF 2012-12-19 07:10
'Christian' is a word that long ago lost its meaning. It has been the cause of so much blood shed and torture and you name the evil. Christians have a lot to answer for.

Wellll, to a degree, they are right. Dog or God, or whatever you want to call the big stick of Nature, etc, etc, etc, whatever is IS, and that's just the way it goes and is.
AND, they, the fundemented are still a***oles.
Perhaps they are just a form of what the Buddhists call wrathfool heeling...... or what thee Native Americans call Hungry Goats.
We are all loons on this earth. How else could you explain the mess we have made of Nature?
Oh, yea, DoGod.
Everything IS perfect as it is, and totally screwed up, and neither are true... We are not really hear, anyway.

AND, LOVE is what matters.
Love Heals, and the rest is B.S.

The majority of Christians are pro-war (huge supporters for both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars), and are pro-death penalty.
Go figure!

America decided long ago that words, no matter how distasteful, are preferred to bullets. This is who we are. So instead of venting the obvious hostility most sane people feel, lets see if this will be handled the way any political rally would be; That is; Make sure police lines are made and manned FAR away from the people at the service, and ask that the news media not devote one more sentence or video clip to the "cause" of these inhumane people.

Would the news media be covering a shouting homeless person on the street? No. These folks don't deserve the "attention" that they might get. That's what they want, so deprive them of it.

Maybe O'Reilly will post the names and addresses of these folks on his show and imply that they should be shot next? Hmmm.

Is the enemy of my enemy my friend?

Just another example of the hatred and insanity of the right wing. Unfortunately the supreme court gives them more rights than the bereaved. Don't they have a right to some privacy at the funerals of their children. The supreme court gives permission to these crazy people to harass others. They are allowed to their free speech but why at the gravesite?
+22 # RLF 2012-12-19 07:11
If it were anti corp. protesters at a presidential debate, they would only be allowed two miles away in a landfill.

I hope the Westboro loonies do show up in Newtown ... so that the nation can see what a disgustingly depraved group of fanatically pseudo-religiou s terrorists they are.

First Amendment Rights are one thing ... but rights without responsibility are little more than sanctioned anarchy.
+27 # Glen 2012-12-18 13:46
Exactly, openlyblack. This group also points out the variations in mental illness in this country. How long will it be until groups such as this take up arms to perform their version of the will of god?

There is just so much non-love in this world that creates so much unnecessary pain! People have to wake up to the understanding that peace (non violence) begins with, as Michael Jackson sang "The Man In The Mirror" and I Am asking him to change his ways! Love and peace are created in the heart, in each and every heart. So we all need to have a change of heart if we want to see peace in this world. The more love we put out, the more love comes back to us. If we are constantly putting out non-loving thoughts and actions, guess what we will be getting back? It is very difficult to hug a porcupine! So guys, although it may be the hardest thing we have ever attempted, we are going to have to learn to love one another unconditionally . Work for the betterment of all and do it with love in our hearts. No more hatred, no more negativity. This can be such a beautiful life if we all just do our own bit. That is the only way we can turn this reality around. Please try!

You forgot to add FORGIVENESS, you need that just as much as love.

Very tempting to think that if there is indeed a 'God' and this god was truly interested in the beings, doings and machinations of his/her own 'creations', that I know for sure which of these creations he/she would be calling 'home' posthaste. However, upon a few moments more consideration, these creations merely give me another opportunity to decide who and what I am in relationship to that. I am grateful for this opportunity. They have served their purpose. Could this be evidence of 'God'?

Westboro Baptist Church -- proof that God loves stupid people
+28 # angelfish 2012-12-18 11:41
WHAT kind of Perverts ARE these people? Harassing grieving families is the least "Christian" act I can imagine. HOW can they inject themselves into this most private, grievous moment? HOW can they, Cretins that they are, get a permit to assemble? If they do this, I hope THOUSANDS will line the streets to prevent them from horrifying these families ANY further! I take comfort in the fact that when THEY die and stand before God to read THEIR Page out of the Book, they will be found wanting! They are Fanatical Bullies wrapping themselves in their fundamentalist Bull-Puckey. I guess they've never known the Love of Jesus or any of the Good News He preached. God protect ALL the suffering families and keep these maniacs FAR away from them.

Belief in a cruel God makes a cruel man. - Thomas Paine.

That the Westboro Baptist Church exists, is more than enough proof for any thinking person to realize that unlike Karl Marx's (mis)quote that religion is 'the opiate of the masses', it is actually the crystal meth of the masses; it is the drug who's influence allows its users to display the most horrific behavior and believe it proper. Behavior which, had they not been under the harmful influence of said drug, few humans would even contemplate, let alone attempt to justify such evil.

Mouth dropped to the floor in reading this but as I think about it, if they do rear their ugly heads, it won't do the NRA ant favors.

The NRA thrives because it carries a bible in one hand and a gun in the other, protected by the 2nd Amendment as its "right." Well, this group is no different. Using guns as a means of self-defense, they scream that violence (in one hand) is God's way of punishing the deviants of the world (bibles in the other hand)- protected by the "right" of the 1st Amendment... It's the extreme interpretations of the Bible and the Constitution that kills innocent people who get in the way.

I just can't believe anyone is so desensitized that their opinions blind their actions. How can anyone want to put the families of the victims thru any more pain? I am so, so, so truly sorry for this all. I have nothing more to say...
+9 # HahliHohli 2012-12-18 13:21
I feel your frustration and quiet outrage! But this is what it takes for the nation to come together and agree that this must change, collective consciousness must change! And indeed it will; it already has. Thank you.
+30 # paradoctor 2012-12-18 12:23
Mr. Phelps is aged; sooner or later he will die; then we get to picket his funeral. And it'll be a big crowd, too, with gays and lesbians and veterans and cops and parents.
+9 # Glen 2012-12-18 13:36
Don't count on any of this ending with Phelps' death. He has rabid followers and kids are being brainwashed in this approach to the world. These folks will be lucky if friends and family do not attack them.
+5 # mdhome 2012-12-19 18:42
They have enough who are so sick of their devil worship (yeah I know they think it is god) that the funeral procession will never get out the church door, they will have to bury him in the church.
+4 # Anarchist 23 2012-12-20 13:31
Picket his funeral? I'd go with ribbons, dancing and throwing flowers! Perhaps he's meeting with that cruel god he so loves and he's no longer visiting his hate among us here. Wah Hoo1 bring music, wine and song-Mr. Phelps has passed on!

+18 # reiverpacific 2012-12-18 14:30
now here is a classic example of the utter abuse of what is left of "free speech"!
How come the cops go after "Occupy" and other peaceful protesters against the death-and war-and-big-fin ance machines but these medievalist bastards don't get thrown in the max-security slammer as fomenters of violence and hate crimes (cause I'd like to get my ol' scrapper hands on 'em -then I'd get jailed more than likely!) and yes, domestic terrorism.? Let the max security jail population at them and you'd hear no more!
It also reinforces my posit that churches, especially of this ilk, should have their tax-free status revoked and be fined heavily for civil disruption and provocation.
But for a nice bit of pushback (on one of Jones' anti-muslim rants), check the following out (John Lennon lives on!!!)
+14 # tbcrawford 2012-12-18 14:50
Can't believe I'm saying this but Westboro Church makes me wish I had a gun! I've always said, religion is the primary cause of war and other vile acts. May the innocence of children prevail.

I won't. I'll be thrilled.
+14 # othermother 2012-12-18 18:00
My husband reminded me that more than half of Phelps'little helpers are lawyers. Don't think of these people as deluded fanatics. Think of them as calculating, vicious shysters who make money by provoking vulnerable people to react in ways that can be made the basis of winnable lawsuits. The shock troops may be dim and deluded, but there is probably a brain orchestrating the outrages--even if it's reptilian. They are perfectly ruthless and do not care whether deaths (as in the response to Koran-burning) arise from their repulsive theatrics. I suggest that Christians should picket their pickets with signs thanking God for forcing agents of the devil to reveal their diabolic nature. But 'monsters' @ opinionnaire works too.
+7 # rlhollow 2012-12-18 19:33
A nation is thankful that these disturbed, deranged, delusional people are waving signs and heckling - rather than picking up guns. We would also be grateful if the media organizations could resist giving this most unspeakably grotesque behavior camera time.

Citizens of Newtown ponder, Can it get worse?

For those who have lost a child - you know there is no greater pain. And these monsters are not religious no matter what name they use.
+10 # Marco Luxe 2012-12-19 13:25
It is irresponsible journalism to call this family cult a church without qualification. They should be referred to as the Phelps Clan, or my preference the Phelps Klan. Disbarred attorney Phelps calls his small family group a church to gain a gloss of respectability, but they do not meet any common usage criteria for a church.
+5 # cafetomo 2012-12-19 16:18
Should free speech go the way of gun laws, then?

Potty mouth makes them no less entitled, though chickenshit for abusing others from behind perfectly good rights. Words kill. Ask Amanda Todd. But it offers justification for rescinding speech rights as much as makes the NRA’s case that gun laws are equally dumb for similar reasons.

Can't fix stupid. You can compound it and be in good company, but simplistic absolutes will win arguments & little else.

What is right and what rights are, seem to be generating some confusion. Let’s say it’s that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. We defer to the constitution these days, because back then it was actually possible to make a decision. But no one has ever managed to legislate simple human decency. Or a way to keep simple meanness from getting around it.

The first amendment is as sanctified as the second. Either can be bent beyond tolerance, but being intolerant of intolerance is bringing a gas can to a house fire; Things are only going to go predictably, but now you're getting blamed for it. Argue with retards long enough, and you begin to sound like one. Clearly, their bread and butter is in getting others doing so. Stop intolerating intolerance and they'll stop parading about, when we're not lining the streets for them.

For now, these idiots are keeping other idiots busy. Something we all need to be, at least in making society a reflection of more than it was a couple centuries ago.

When is the tax-exempt status of this so-called "church" going to be yanked? They are obviously a political organization.
+3 # DaveM 2012-12-20 17:59
I think we can safely call this a publicity stunt, along with most of this group's activities. What sort of mind craves attention so intensely that it will accept what it receives from this base, amoral, disgusting level of activity? Mental illness supposedly cannot be "caught" though it is supposed to "run in families". Perhaps this bunch has come up with something that is contagious to anyone possessing the Phelps genome.

Those who profess Christianity--a nd that covers a pretty wide range and degree of beliefs will know that Jesus died for the sake of others (not going to get into any theological argument over the full meaning of that here). In that context, the man who throws himself on a grenade to save his buddies is doing the work of Jesus. The Phelps "church" however would condemn this man and proclaim his death as God's punishment for whatever "sin" they are ranting about at the moment. How can one reconcile the two in any way that gives the Phelps bunch the right to call themselves a "Christian church"?
+3 # lneidhold 2012-12-21 09:28
Westboro Baptists are lower than the maggots in my garbage can. Phelps is the queen maggot.
+2 # fredboy 2012-12-21 09:47
Westboro simply defines the cancer spreading in many if not most of the nation's "Christian" churches. A hateful, vengeful, fearful, desperate anti-Christian plague. By the way, notice how few (if any) churches have commented on the Newtown massacre or gun control.
+3 # silenus 2012-12-22 04:52
The Westboro cult is so beyond the pale that even the Ku Klux Klan has denounced them as "hatemongers." Now that's an accomplishment.
