Civil Rights Act Critic Rand Paul to Launch African American Outreach Project

By Josh Israel, ThinkProgress

23 November 13

he Michigan Republican Party will launch its new African American Engagement Office in Detroit next month, aiming to improve on the mere two percent of the vote their presidential nominee received in the city last year. To headline this event, the party has enlisted Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) - though Paul has been an outspoken critic of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The Huffington Post reported Friday that Paul will be the star of the December 6 kickoff event. His selection, the article notes, is odd given his record on civil rights and his staunch opposition to a federal bailout of Detroit.

While Paul has since denied ever making the comments, he has repeatedly criticized the Civil Rights Act of 1964?s bans on whites-only lunch counters and discrimination by private employers. "The hard part of believing in freedom," he has argued, is that it requires believing companies should be free to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation - even though he personally opposes such discrimination.

Watch Paul explain his views:

In August, Paul told an audience in Louisville that he does not believe "there is any particular evidence of polls barring African Americans from voting," despite mounting evidence of voter suppression. Because America has an African-American president, he argued, we no longer need the Voting Rights Act. He has also endorsed photo ID requirements for voters, which disproportionately disenfranchise minority voters.

After Paul's disastrous attempt at the historically-black Howard University in April to convince the African Americans to vote for the GOP, Paul seems unlikely to win many of the 97.5 percent of Detroit voters who backed President Obama last year, regardless of their race.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Time to choose sides....we are either with the fascists or against them for as Howard Zinn taught us "You can't be neutral on a moving train."

Unfortunately, by screaming "Anti-Semite!" at everyone who lacks enthusiasm for extermination of the native population of Palestine, Mackey and his ilk have lost all credibility, like the little boy who cried "Wolf!"

The Gregg Carlstrom video, above, is a perfect example of the bullshit with which the oligarchy prevents the 99 percent from holding the one percent accountable for its larceny. The Trump statements have nothing to do with or resemblance to anything in the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. But the accusation will elicit Pavlovian salivation in the idiot TV-watching masses.

I too have been branded an anti-semite (or a self-hater when those hurling the shit find out i'm a Jew) for my decades of condemnation of the policies of the Israeli gov't. But those of us trying to come together to stand up against Bannon and Trumpism more broadly are not "crying wolf" when we point out the racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism, etc., that was used during the campaign and now appears will continue into the Trump presidency nor the immediate outpouring and resurgence of hate speech, harassment and outright hate crimes just since the election.

The disgusting ones in this piece are not those calling Bannon an anti-semite but rather those like Dershowitz (as much as the out and out anti-semites) and any others who are now willing to tolerate the intolerable (not implying here they should have before Trump's victory either.

Bannon can't be anti-Semitic if he supports Israel? All those who want to ethnically cleanse Jews out of the US and send them to Israel are anti-Semitic and "support" Israel.

Bannon doesn't like Muslims because he's a Nationalist? Why would his "Nationalism" not include Jews? Oh, that's right, it does. Send them all to Israel, exactly as the Europeans did after WWII. I assume they were hoping that both sides would kill each other and the world would be rid of the people in both groups, who were all different from real human beings. Who could have guessed that the result would have been the refugees ethnically cleansing the indigenous people using the same kinds of methods they had learned as victims?

Oh, well, let's try it all over again. Maybe this time we'll get it right.
