Jimmy Carter: 'Illegitimate' Trump Only President Because of Russian Meddling

Trump ‘put into office because Russians interfered on his behalf’ Carter says investigation would show Trump didn’t win in 2016

immy Carter has called Donald Trump an “illegitimate president” who was helped into office by Russian interference in the 2016 election.

At a conference for his human rights organization the Carter Center, the former president said a full investigation “would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016”.

“He lost the election and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf,” Carter added.

The event moderator, Jon Meacham, asked if that meant Carter thought that Trump was an illegitimate president. Carter then briefly paused and replied: “Based on what I just said, which I can’t retract,” Carter said. The remark then triggered laughter in the audience and from Meacham.

Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, and the Kremlin’s ties to Trump’s campaign, were exhaustively investigated by Robert Mueller. In his 448-page report, submitted in April, the special counsel concluded there was not enough evidence to establish a conspiracy between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia. But he did detail numerous incidents of Russian interference, many of which have led to indictments.

Carter also called for Trump to condemn Russia for their actions and said the current president should “admit that it happened”.

“There’s no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election,” he said.

On Friday Trump, and Vladimir Putin met at the G20 summit in Japan – and Trump jokingly raised the issue. As the pair sat for photographs, a reporter asked if Trump would tell Putin not to meddle in the 2020 US election. Without looking at Putin, Trump said: “Don’t meddle in the election, please.’” He then repeated the phrase with a mock finger wag.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Carter, one of the most honest American Presidents, called it perfectly. Trump is an illegitimate president.

TRUMP DOES NOT BELONG IN THE WHITE HOUSE, HE BELONGS IN THE BIG HOUSE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

Without looking at Putin, Trump said: “Don’t meddle in the election, please.’” He then repeated the phrase with a mock finger wag.

Trump is proving for the world that he doesn't have a clue about how dangerous dictator Putin is inside his country. Trump adores dictators while turning against our traditional allies. Watch how he admires Kim Jong Un. [Wants to 'hold hands' and got 'love letter]'. He admits that Putin wasn't involved in election meddling because he said he wasn't. MbS in Saudi Arabia is doing a great job. Killing a WaPo journalist and imprisoning women for protesting isn't my idea of great.

I beg to differ. Phat Boy knows very well how dangerous Putin is, but since Putin owns him, he's fully behind the program. He sees himself as one of the Russian oligarchs with their money and power, and he is more than happy to sell out the whole country do attain that status.

Election theft is a joke for Donald as long as he is the thief.

Donald, Kim, and Vlad -- an unholy and unfunny trio.

Problem was Trump didn't win, Hillary lost. 90 Million registered voters did NOT VOTE. The DNC will do it again with Biden and both sides will continue to rake in the cash. Why do we need an 18 month campaign that cost $7Billion in2016 anyway. Trump became the spokesperson for the undereducated and the angry, while Hillary was,"Stay the course".

Of course, Carter and other who fling out this frivolous charge presented no evidence. He did not even allude to any evidence. This is how propaganda works. After enough repetition, people just assume some false story is true and that no proof is needed.

"Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, and the Kremlin’s ties to Trump’s campaign, were exhaustively investigated by Robert Mueller. "

In fact, Mueller's investigation was very far from "exhaustive." Mueller never interviewed anyone who actually has real knowledge of the charges. He relied on CrowdStrike, a firm with a very dubious reputation.

Carter want's Trump to "admit it happened" when it did not happen. This is just where Orwell ends up in 1984 -- "2+2=5," the obviously false statement that everyone is required to believe. That's what dogma is.

Carter's dogma is based on 3 assertions:

1. Russia hacked the DNC and Podesta emails and published them on WikiLeaks. Not possible. See refutations by Craig Murray and Bill Binney.

2. The Internet Research Agency published averts on social media supporting Trump's campaign. These were click baits on a wide variety of subjects ranging from 2012 up to now. See Gareth Porter's refutation.

3. Numerous connections between Trump campaign officials and Russian government agents to get dirt on Hillary. All the contacts were actually MI6 and CIA assets. No dirt was ever transmitted.

2+2=5. Russia did it. Santa Claus is real. Iraq had WMD. Etc. Etc.

Nah. The Russian stuff didn't have that much effect. It was only talk that was largely ignored. He is illegitimate because of domestic Republican voter suppression that suppressed more votes than his margin of victory in several states.

ife -- yes, you have the truth. Why is this so hard for people to acknowledge. Carter wants Trump to admit that Russia swung the election in his favor. But Carter and really no one with a national voice would ever admit what you just wrote -- "Republican voter suppression that suppressed more votes than his margin of victory in several states."

It just can't get any more fucked up than this. Russiagate keeps voter suppression hidden from view.

Good for Jimmy Carter. May Trump be a one term president also, please God.

What would a "legitimate" president be?

Plainly, it would be a president who was supported by the majority or at least a plurality of the votes.

The "electoral college" negates the necessity of winning more votes than the "losing" opponent.

As well, the votes would have to have been cast in a free and fair election.

In the USA, the electoral districts are influenced by partisans and there is ample evidence of voter suppression.

I won't bother with questions about Russian interference or about "fake news" other than to say that liberal democracy, in the view of its most ardent supporters from J. S. Mill on down, requires an informed electorate. I leave it to others to decide whether the American voter meets even a low standard for that criterion.

There are also those - and they needn't be 1960s-style participatory democrats - who think that the "informed" electorate must also be "engaged" and active in the democratic process ... presumably meaning that their involvement in politics isn't just a matter of showing up at a polling both every couple of years. "Data accumulated over the decades suggests that at the federal, state and local levels, the proportion of people who take their sacred civic duty seriously is ... uh ... "problematic."

So, is the current president "legitimate"?

I dunno ... I'm not an American (never was, never will be).

Thanks RR and ife. I'm glad to see not everyone here is a fan of Russiagate. The DNC gave us Trump and they are getting ready to do it again.
