Bernie Sanders: 'Beating Trump Is Not Good Enough'

en. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., says his presidential campaign is about much more than beating President Trump.

"That is not enough," Sanders said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" when asked about Democratic rival Joe Biden's approach to global warming.

In a speech in Philadelphia the day before, Biden said: "If you want to know what the first and most important plank in my climate proposal is: Beat Trump."

Sanders argued that defeating Trump is only the first step.

"It goes without saying that we've got to defeat Donald Trump, who in my view is the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country. He's a pathological liar. He's a sexist and a racist, et cetera, et cetera," he said.

He continued: "But if we're talking, for example, about climate change, what the scientists tell us is we have 12 years before irreparable damage is done to this planet. Beating Trump is not good enough. You've got to beat the fossil fuel industry. You have to talk on all of those forces of the status quo who do not want to move this country to energy efficiency and sustainable energy."

This was not the first time Sanders took a shot at Biden over the former vice president's approach to global warming. Earlier this month, Sanders responded after Biden's campaign said it was seeking a "middle ground" on the issue.

"There is no 'middle ground' when it comes to climate policy," Sanders wrote on Twitter without directly naming Biden.

"I've never been middle of the road on the environment," Biden later contended, saying he has been talking about climate change since 1987. "Nobody has been more consistent about taking on the environment and a green revolution than I have."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

If Biden is talking about 'finding a middle ground' with the fossil fuel companies and he is cozy with Wall Street, he will not appeal to progressives and/or young people. He will also not attract Trump supporters or populists from either party.

Biden is NOT electable, no matter what the establishment tells us.

True electability and good policy are telling us the same thing; it's the establishment that insists on shoving the unelectable down our throats -- and we know how that ends.

Bernie Sanders is right re the environment; it's all or nothing. We have 12 years to turn it all around according to our atmospheric scientists or we are done, kaput, doomed. We need a Manhattan style operation where we threw everything in. Today, the fossil fuel boys resist us, and, if they continue with this opposition, we should throw them into jail and confiscate their estates using the latter in the struggle to save the environment. It is time to get serious in the planet's defense. If you oppose our survival then, you should be deprived of yours. So be it!

Biden, whose environmental track record is weak and polluter-friend ly and who has been pushing a nonexistent "middle ground" on fighting global warming, now claims, ""Nobody has been more consistent about taking on the environment and a green revolution than I have." That sounds eerily like Trump.

The "middle ground" lost to "the worst candidate in history" Trump in 2016. Why would you want to try that again with Biden in 2020? The Democrats like the status quo. Why change it when they are raking in money from the same corporate interests as the Republicans. Vote Progressive. Go Bernie, GO

Sanders is absolutely right. We're all out of middle ground, we've used it all up endlessly debating the possibility of climate change. For Bidden to claim that nobody has been more consistent then he, means to me that he thinks it is admirable to stand on the precipice continually and ignorantly. Biden is a good man at heart but the time has far past his ability to lead.

Good for Perjurer Thomas and Wall Street? Good for the Military Industrial Complex? I don't know what's good about a heart like that, and neither will half of the Democratic party- the half that is demanding a cessation of middle ground policies friendly to the corporatists who have stood by while our planet has been raped for profit and is slowly dying.
