In Wake of Mass Shooting, New Zealand's Ardern Calls for Global Fight Against Racism

ew Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern returned to Christchurch for the second time since a gunman killed 50 people in an attack on two mosques last Friday.

Her first stop was at Cashmere High School, which lost two current students and one former student in last week's shooting, NPR's Rob Schmitz reported.

"It is OK to grieve," she told the students and faculty. "It is OK to help even if you weren't directly effected."

Her visit came amid the first funerals of the victims from last week's shooting. Khaled and Hamza Mustafa, a Syrian father and his 15-year-old son, were among the first to be buried on Wednesday. Zaed Mustafa, 13, the brother of Hamza and son of Khaled, was also wounded in the shooting and attended the funeral in a wheelchair.

The Mustafas arrived in New Zealand last year after living in Jordan as refugees. The boys and father were praying at Al Noor mosque when the gunman opened fire.

Authorities identified Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian citizen living in New Zealand, as the shooter and he has been charged with murder.

Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told NPR he felt shock and shame when he learned of the attack.

"I think any person who's been a former head of government or current head of government would feel that, if one of their own nationals was responsible for an action like this," Rudd said.

He pointed to a "global...social media ecosystem of hatred" as responsible for the rise of far-right or alt-right ideology and "Islamophobic, highly racist" sentiment. The shooter wrote about a "white genocide" in a lengthy screed he published minutes before he carried out his attack.

In an interview with the BBC, Ardern said that while the attacker was Australian, "that is not to say that we do not have an ideology in New Zealand that would be an affront to the majority of New Zealanders."

She issued a global call to weed out right-wing nationalism. "If we want to make sure globally that we are a safe and tolerant and inclusive world we cannot think about this in terms of boundaries."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Planet Earth has a dangerous virus at loose. It is called white hatred and it may well doom us all if we should survive, by chance, global warming and deterioration. So now there are twin threats to our present and future well being. The challenges become ever more menacing and the need for critical thinking and sacrifice ever more necessary. Time to buckle up and get involved for the sake of our children and grandchildren. They too deserve a chance at happiness.

I just received an email from a New Zealander friend, stating:

"Today the Govt has banned all semi-automatic guns. From today they will not
be allowed to be sold. There is a buy-back program happening soon like Australia.
All well be sorted out by 11th April this year.

Our prime minster has done well to make this happen 6 days after the shooting."

My reply:

"YES!

Unfortunately, our JACKASS-JERK ‘president’ will do no such thing,
and, neither will congress - with both beholden to the National Rifle
Association's vast money contributions to the 'Bublican's election
campaigns. *Maybe* this will end once the Mueller investigation is
done, and the truth is known about the Russian influence on, and
interference in, our last elections, some of it done through the NRA.
BUT, I won't hold my breath while waiting for this, and most of the
stupid 'Bublicans appear to be unable to accept the truth no matter
what *FACTS* are revealed, but instead prefer to believe 'Fox Noise'
(otherwise known as ‘Trump TV’) propaganda, and the constant lies
emitted by that JACKASS-JERK... !

WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

Fortunately for you, a good solution appeared, and it is being put
into use quickly (unlike here, where if this is done at all, which is
unlikely, it will take MANY more years to do).

SIGH........... ..........!"

Through repeated Republican corruption and stupidity, America is losing the art of self government. Face it! We are becoming more and stupid. We can't close down the sale of guns even though the number of victims increases each year. We can't end the misgovernment. We waste money in the Defense Dept by the billions. We have major problems with education, health care, rights of woman. We continue to tell ourselves we are the best when our condition becomes more and more lamentable. Is it not time to wake up?
