Ilhan Omar Fires Back at Trump: 'You Have Trafficked in Hate Your Whole Life'

ep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) responded Wednesday to President Trump’s call for her resignation by accusing him of having “trafficked in hate your whole life” and questioning when he would learn from his experiences, as Omar said she has.

The freshman lawmaker, who fired back at Trump on Twitter, has faced a widespread backlash for suggesting that Israel’s allies in U.S. politics were motivated by money rather than principle.

During a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Trump said that “anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress,” called an apology by Omar “lame” and said she should resign from Congress or give up her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“You have trafficked in hate your whole life — against Jews, Muslims, Indigenous, immigrants, black people and more,” Omar said in her tweet Thursday morning. “I learned from people impacted by my words. When will you?”

House Republicans have called for the chamber’s Democratic leadership to strip Omar of her assignment on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) left open the possibility of disciplinary action.

“Apologies are appropriate,” Hoyer said. “But the real test are actions going forward . . . We need to treat one another with respect.”

“If that doesn’t pan out, there may be further actions we need to take,” he added.

House Democratic leaders issued a joint statement on Monday denouncing her use of “anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters.”

In a pair of tweets on Sunday, Omar had cited Puff Daddy’s 1997 paean to money — “It’s All About the Benjamins” — to paint Israel’s supporters in Congress as beholden to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a powerful lobbying group whose members contribute generously to lawmakers who share its perspective on the Middle East.

Under a hail of criticism from both sides of the aisle, the congresswoman apologized and said she was learning about the “painful history of anti-Semitic tropes.”

In the wake of the controversy, Trump himself has come under scrutiny for comments he made to the Republican Jewish Coalition as a presidential candidate in 2015.

“You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money . . . But that’s okay. You want to control your own politician,” Trump told the group at the time.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

I would like to give Omar the advice of Lyndon Johnson -- "don't ever get into a pissing match with a polecat." Polecat is Texas-speak for skunk. You cannot win a pissing match with a polecat because he cannot smell his own stick, but everyone can smell the stink on you. So you lose.

Stay focused on the issues. Ignore the polecat in the White House. Don't poke sticks or throw rocks at him. Talk to the American people about issues.

Good advice, # RR, but the "issues" are created by persons (some of whom might also be "polecats" in your metaphoric sense).

So, when smelly political patterns become manifest, it might well be productive to discuss the human skunks who generate them.

If it triggered a "trope", it appears it was inadvertent. The fact is, it IS all about the Benjamins, trope or no trope. Like all lobbyist interests, the pro-Israeli constellation-- the Israeli government, Saudi Arabia, the crazy "Christian" evangelicals--w ant what they want and so they have bought off Congress. If the Palestinians happened to have billions of dollars on hand to bestow on U.S. politicians, we might not be so unequivocally one-sided on the Israeli-Palesti nian issue.

The only thing you can't do in Washington is tell the truth. They're after Tulsi Gabbard for being anti-war, just like they're after Ilhan Omar for standing up for free speech. The hypocrites always demand an apology for being truthful.

Yeah, wonder how many Benjamins self-righteous Steny is getting from AIPAC.

The one who needs to resign is Steny Hoyer.

What a farce, a charade of blatant hypocrisy! All should toast Omar for her honesty and clear vision. Democrats should condemn all who pursue this phony AIPAC-pleasing dance to punish her.

Our Congress is for sale. That's why we need lobbyists. To connect the buyers and the sellers. In this game the Palestinians are bound to lose . They simply don't have enough money or valuable resources like oil. Justice? Who cares about that? It only gets in the way of profits!

Join AIPAC's Congressional Club

The United States Congress has provided Israel with the strongest support of any institution in the world. Maintaining bipartisan congressional support for Israel is crucial. Involvement in the political process is a tangible way of showing friends of Israel that you care about who serves in Congress. As the political climate changes, the pro-Israel community must continue to grow.

In order to be eligible for Congressional Club membership, individuals must:

Be an AIPAC donor club member

Make a minimum financial commitment of $2,500 a year, or $5,000 per two-year election cycle, to pro-Israel politics

Commit to giving political contributions in a clearly pro-Israel context to candidates running for the United States House of Representatives and/or United States Senate

Follow the Benjamins

Here's a youtube of Omar questioning Elliot Abrams. She very rightly makes the connection between his work in Latin America in the 80s, which clearly included atrocities, and his plans for Venezuela right now. She is right on the point and very brave -- when compared to the other suck up members of congress.

Omar stirred a nest that needed to be stirred. Good for her. The establishment's reaction goes a long way to proving her point. And of course it's more than money. The Jewish vote can tip Florida, and Florida can tip a presidential election, as it did in 'OO. Good posts, Rodi! (!!). Good to have Omar in Congress.

This whole "anti Semitic tropes" thing is bullshit. I had to look up last night what it was that she said. That's it? There's nothing anti Semitic about it. The people who are supposed to represent us aren't doing so, and they aren't doing so because we can't afford to pay them enough to represent us. The Zionist occupiers of Palestine can - and do. US support for so-called "Israel" is a horrible thing, an atrocity. The intent of our "Representative s" to make it illegal to boycott the Zionist regime is another atrocity. The whole lot of these people, Democrats and Republicans alike, need to go, and they need to go now. We need more like Ilhan Omar and AOC, and less - no, not less, but absolutely none at all - like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton (and Bill), Steny Hoyer, Barack Obama, and the rest of those sold out assholes. The American people need to educate themselves about what the people who are supposed to be representing us are really doing, and stop voting for them.
