Ocasio-Cortez to Bring Kavanaugh Critic to Trump's SOTU

emocrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s guest for the State of the Union address is a woman who cornered Sen. Jeff Flake on live television to protest his support for Brett Kavanaugh.

Ana Maria Archila, who lives in the star freshman Democrat’s New York District, said she will wear white and a pin that the congresswoman gave her that says, “Well-behaved women rarely make history.”

“I never thought I’d be excited about being in the same room with Donald Trump,” said Archila, co-executive director of the left-leaning Center for Popular Democracy. Ocasio-Cortez invited her a few weeks ago, she said, adding, “We talked about making sure that we, with our presence, express the dignity of people who are under attack from this administration, the resilience. We will try to communicate that with the way we show up in the space.”

Kavanaugh, now a Supreme Court justice, is also expected to attend Trump’s address. Justices typically attend such speeches delivered by the president who appointed them.

During Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings in September, Archila and another woman confronted Flake in a Senate elevator and, live on CNN, yelled at the Arizona Republican for his intent to vote for the appellate court judge. Kavanaugh had been accused by Christine Blasey Ford of pinning her to a bed and groping her when the two were teenagers in the 1980s. Flake later said he wanted to delay the Senate vote to give the committee time to investigate. He ultimately voted to confirm Kavanaugh and is now retired from the Senate.

Kavanaugh angrily denied the accusation and was confirmed to the high court. But Ford’s and Kavanaugh’s emotional appeals to the Judiciary Committee were a cultural watershed amid the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct. Kavanaugh’s patron was Trump, who also has been accused of groping more than a dozen women and denies it.

Archila said that day was the first time she had revealed her own sexual assault as a child in Colombia.

The Center for Popular Democracy revealed the pairing with a video released on social media.

“Our own @AnaMariaArchil2 showed the world what courage & strength look like in the age of Trump. Tomorrow night, she will join another badass woman, @AOC @RepAOC for the #SOTU.”

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Leave it to the AP to "report" that the Center for Popular Democracy" is "left-leaning." At what point will we read that the AP is "right-leaning. " Probably never.

This is OK. State of the Union addresses have fallen into this kind of spectacle.

I just worry that AOC is working with the Center for Popular Democracy, which is a Soros funded group. Soros is totally against populism and popular democracy but he funds a lot of groups that give him control of the agenda and he turns it toward his interests, which are global finance capitalism. So we get overwhelmed with issues like Kavanaugh and Archila's complaint but democrats end up supporting neo-liberalism.

In reality, Archila's complaint against her sexual abuser had nothing to do with Kavanaugh and Blasey's accusation.

I just hope AOC does not get co-opted by Soros. He's very good at that. She's smart and may be able to resist him.

I think that you, Rascal, have a sheeple's ready made attitude about George Soros which is nothing like the truth. If you are going to characterize Soros' interests, why don't you mention the preparation of foreign speaking graduate students for their stay at an American college or university.

j.e. -- odd that you bring up Soros' funding of people from all over the world to come to the US for college and graduate school. I know these people quite well and have worked with many of them. There are very many institutions in the US which do this. Part of what they do is good, but part of it is also about the creation of a class of people who can return to their native countries and further the interests of the US and its corporations.

I know a lot about Soros and his Open Society Foundation. I've actually been a recipient of grants from the Open Society. You just have to see the big picture for Soros. He can give some chump change to people to do good things (like me) but then he loots the wealth of whole nations (like Thailand or Korea).

This article brought tears to my eyes. Wehave a SCOTUS who lied to get his over entitled ass on to the Federal bench in every sworn testimony he ever gave to the Senate every single one. This hyper partisan political operative is a demonstrated perjurer who like the other sexual predator who lied his way onto the SCOTUS stains ourhigh court with disrepute. Contempt of court? You bet. When such sniveling baby men like Brett are elevated we are all demeaned and there is no justice. There is just us.

The women are fighting back against male abusers; it 's about time. Turn the other cheek, submit and get nowhere. Stand up tall, be tough and hold your ground. A new attitude for a new age. Courage counts now and resistance is inevitable. The younger generations will lead the way helped immensely by the old liberals. Middle age as well.
Onward to victory.
