Honduran Migrant Caravan Grows as It Moves Toward the US

migrant caravan of up to 3,000 people moved into Guatemala on Monday as the group continued to move north from Honduras with the goal of reaching Mexico or the United States, according to a Reuters report.

Reuters reported that the caravan had more than doubled in size since the weekend and crossed into Guatemala after getting past police at the country's border.

The caravan began as a group of 160 people when it left San Pedro Sula on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

The migrants' trek has continued despite warnings from U.S. officials against crossing the U.S. border.

President Trump wrote in a tweet that the U.S. will cut off resources to Honduras if the caravan "is not stopped."

"The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S. is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!" he tweeted.

Katie Waldman, a spokeswoman for U.S. Department of Homeland Security, told the AP in a statement that the caravan is “what we see day-in and day-out at the border as a result of well-advertised and well-known catch-and-release loopholes.”

“Until Congress acts, we will continue to have de-facto open borders that guarantees future ‘caravans’ and record numbers of family units entering the country illegally,” she added.
