Trump Administration Discussed Coup Plans With Rebel Venezuelan Officers

By Ernesto Londoño and Nicholas Casey, The New York Times

08 September 18

he Trump administration held secret meetings with rebellious military officers from Venezuela over the last year to discuss their plans to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro, according to American officials and a former Venezuelan military commander who participated in the talks.

Establishing a clandestine channel with coup plotters in Venezuela was a big gamble for Washington, given its long history of covert intervention across Latin America. Many in the region still deeply resent the United States for backing previous rebellions, coups and plots in countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Brazil and Chile, and for turning a blind eye to the abuses military regimes committed during the Cold War.

The White House, which declined to answer detailed questions about the talks, said in a statement that it was important to engage in “dialogue with all Venezuelans who demonstrate a desire for democracy” in order to “bring positive change to a country that has suffered so much under Maduro.”

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Any country that doesn't GIVE us what we want, we destroy.

Don't you love the White House statement about talking with all those 'who demonstrate a desire for democracy'? It's almost as if they knew what democracy was, never mind practised it.

Is there any reason that Maduro is any different from the other totalitarians that drumpf loves so well? Could it be that the only reason for being so upset about Maduro doing the same kind of thing that drumpf says he wants to do here is that Venezuela is sitting on a pool of oil?

The problem with this article starts in the first sentence: "The Trump Administration held secret meetings." In reality, it was the CIA which did this and it is more than likely Trump did not even know this happened until he was briefed on it later. The CIA has long recruited people out of the Venezuelan military who would be willing to stage a coup against first Chavez and now Maduro. This is what the CIA does in very many nations around the world.

The Bush admin staged two coups against Chavez. One had the military kidnap Chavez and hold him for a few days until mobs of Venezuelan citizens were able to free him.

Eva Golinger who is a Venezuelan-Amer ican lawyer and writes often and very well about Venezuela believes that the Obama administration infected Chavez with cancer and thus murdered him. Where has the NYT been on this story? Silent as usual.

Venezuela has a democracy now. The people have voted overwhelmingly for Chavez and Maduro, in spite of the devastating US economic sanctions and economic war. They don't want any more US oil company puppets to run the nation.

Trump's knowledge of Venezuela is as stupid as his knowledge of N. Korea and Iran. He hates Venezuela and Maduro because that what republicans do. Maybe if Trump actually met with Maduro he might change. Maybe he will meet Maduro at the UN opening later this month.

Trump's admin says it wants a dialog with all Venezuelans who want democracy. That described Maduro very well.

Oh, come off it. Trump has expressed his disdain for Venezuela and Maduro in public. He might not get involved with the details but this is HIS CIA now. It is doing what he wants.

Well said. The U.S. (read the oil oligarchs) has never forgiven Venezuela for kicking out big oil and has deemed they are to be punished.
