Mexico: Second Political Precandidate Murdered in 4 Days27 February 18
Rebaja, who was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was discovered along with relative Cresencio Rebaja Bello on the Chilapa-Atzacoaloya highway, Guerrero state police said. The bodies were found on Sunday with multiple gunshot wounds, Security spokesman of Guerrero Coordination Group, Roberto Alvarez Heredia, stated. According to reports from Mexican authorities, the cousins were believed to have been kidnapped and executed in what appears to be a politically motivated crime. The State Attorney General's Office is investigating the double homicide. Rebaja also served as the director of Evaluation and Monitoring of the Secretariat of Indigenous Affairs and Afromexican Communities for Guerrero. A third relative, an aunt, has also been reported missing. Rebaja is the second aspiring female candidate to be killed in less than one week. Four days ago, Party of the Democratic Revolution's (PRD) Antonia Jaimes Moctezuma was reportedly executed by two men in a restaurant. Five mutilated bodies were found near the same restaurant where Jaimes Moctezuma was murdered, in February. Guerrero state, which has a population of 35,000 which spreads across about 160 municipalities, is plagued by drug and political interrelated violence. As recent as October, the body of PRD founder Ranferi Hernandez Acevedo was also discovered in the region. The upcoming presidential elections are scheduled for July 1. |
