According to the U.S.-led coalition, 483 civilians have died since mid-2014. International monitoring groups believe the number is much higher.

he U.S.-led international alliance against the Islamic State group announced Friday that nearly 500 civilians have been killed as a result of Operation Inherent Resolve, a campaign which has launched over 21,000 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.

The report from Operation Inherent Resolve comes just two months after a U.S.-led airstrike killed at least 230 Iraqi civilians in Mosul.

“To date, based on information available, CJTF-OIR (Combined Joint Task Force) assesses that, it is more likely than not, at least 484 civilians have been unintentionally killed by coalition strikes since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve,” read a monthly report by Operation Inherent Resolve released Friday.

The figure falls dramatically below the death toll reported by Airwaves, a London-based monitoring group that has been tallying the death toll of coalition strikes by compiling official and local reports.

According to Airwaves, between 1,237 and 1,897 civilians died in Iraq and Syria in 2016 alone.

Since August 2014, the U.S. has led a bombing campaign against the Islamic State group, conducting 21,035 airstrikes — without authorization of Syrian President Bashar al Assad or the United Nations Security Council.
