The police said they were investigating an incident in which a construction worker drove into a crowd of protesters and fired gunshots in the air.

everal Dakota pipeline protesters were injured Saturday after they were run over by a construction truck as the driver drove through their gathering, firing gunshots into the air near the construction site of the pipeline according to videos and photos posted online, which prompted the local police to investigate the incident Sunday.

Protesters against the oil pipeline near sacred tribal lands briefly blocked two entrances to a work yard near the rural town of Mandan early Saturday, causing workers to leave the area.

Videos and pictures posted online show a man in a white construction vehicle holding a handgun and yelling obscenities while driving through a crowd of protesters.

One video shows the man later raising his gun into the air and firing several shots, although it is not clear from the video whether any protesters were nearby at the time. The man was not identified.

The Morton County Sheriff's Department is looking into what occurred, spokesperson Rob Keller said in an email to Reuters Sunday, declining to comment further because the investigation is ongoing.

A protester was injured and an ambulance was called, but she refused treatment, Keller said. The circumstances of the injury were not clear, but one video shows the man striking a woman while she hangs off the truck's side-view mirror.

Protesters said on Facebook that a woman's hand had been smashed and that her feet had been run over, requiring three stitches on a finger.

Protests have been taking place for months against the US$3.8 billion Dakota Access construction project, which has drawn steady opposition from Native American and environmental activists over violating sacred lands and damage to water sources in the area.

The action against the pipeline has attracted more than 300 Native American tribes from across the United States in a show of unity that is being called historic.
