But Harris (D) delivered a somber but hopeful message during her victory speech on Tuesday night, as her party lost a bid to the White House and control of both the House and Senate. Hillary Clinton conceded to Donald Trump at about 3 a.m. Wednesday following an unexpected and painful loss. “Our ideals are at stake right now, and we all have to fight for who we are,” Harris said. “I believe this is that moment in time for our country when we are collectively being required to look in the mirror and with furrowed brow, as we ask a question: Who are we? In California, I believe the answer is a good one: We are a great country.” Harris won by more than 1.3 million votes, according to the Los Angeles Times, defeating U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D). She will replace outgoing Sen. Barbara Boxer (D), who is retiring. “Part of what makes us great is fighting for our ideals,” Harris told a cheering crowd. “And this is the moment that is challenging us. I know we will rise to the occasion.” Harris said that the nature of fighting for civil rights and equality is that “whatever gains we make, they will not be permanent.” “Do not despair. Do not be overwhelmed,” she said. “Do not throw up our hands when it is time to roll up our sleeves and fight for who we are.” |
