Summary: "The United States is on a new trajectory in warfare, says Jeremy Scahill, national security correspondent for The Nation. With its increase in drone strikes, the United States is turning away from the large-scale military interventions of the past decade and towards covert operations, beyond such known locations as Pakistan and Yemen."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

Such a cowardly way to kill... and how often is there collateral damage to civilians? Consider this is a red flag, so we have all been warned.

This is Reagan Admin Redux:

"And so, I think what we are sort of seeing emerge is a sort of "Mini Obama Doctrine" within the larger scale of US counterterroris m policy, which is returning to, um, a sort of proxy war mentality of the 1980s in Central America, support for the Contras, others, is happening on a level in Somalia where war lords are being embraced, secret programs are being authorized, and then there is this sort of secret air war that is seen, but never confirmed publicly by any named officials. And, I think that's gonna be one of Obama's, um, foreign policy legacies, sort of returning us to the era of covert action, not military large scale operations."

One criticism of this Obama foreign policy thesis: LIBYA--That's a pretty damn large scale military operation, with NATO "driving" it, but totally predicated upon Obama's US foreign policy mandate of AFRICOM expansion and forward footing in the region.

Syria is following the "Mini Obama Doctrine" as Scahill outlines. And, like as he describes it, it is a "proxy war mentality of the 1980s in Central America," or otherwise known as Reagan Admin Redux at this point. Yuck!

Clearly this is a side of Obama that did not come out in his campaign. Few people thought he would "expand" the GWOT so dramatically. He's sent special forces to many nations in Africa and he's conducting covert wars there. Drones are killing people all over africa.

This "son of Africa" as Qaddafi affectionately and mistakenly called him will go down in history as the new King Leopold who re-ignited a new scramble for Africa.

the Chinese are woking all over Africa, too. But they use social and industrial development. They actually do things that help people in exchange for resources. the method of the US is just to kill, terrorize, loot, and steal. Which approach will last? The US can only kill and terrorize. Most people on earth believe that the US is an insane and criminal regime, much like Hitler's germany.

The Obama doctrine is criminal. He now joins the ranks of the neo-cons who cannot travel outside the US for fear of being arrested and charged with crimes against humanity.

We need a regime change in the US. We need a president who can say NO to the CIA and Pentagon.

Right on, RMDC! The next question is, how can we, here in this U.S. of (greed and power) A.(ddiction) get what we soooo need - as you so well stated it, "...a president who can say NO to the CIA and Pentagon."?

Ain't gonna be easy, with mass election fraud and disenfranchisem ent running rampant, dirty trickery karlroving MSDing (manipulating, spinning, distracting) now the m.o. of the 'mess' media, the 'every child left behind' dumbing down, for awhile now, of our kids (not that we here, for some time, have notall been naive and then some).

With this continuing and uppage by Obama (yes, I worked hard to get hime elected) of the Bushwhacked years, I now agree with the Occupy Wall Streeters as I march with them and chant:

WHAT'S THE SOLUTION? GLOBAL REVOLUTION !

There is a 58 man contingent in congress, supported by the makers of the drones, calling itself the Unmanned Systems Caucus. They're attempting to force congress into making drones a part of homeland security, assisting police forces nation wide.

This is big brother in spades. Who knows what kind of data they could glean from running drones over every city in the country, pretending it's for the good of the country, and cut down crime. Privacy has already been thrown out the window. To allow this would be throwing the whole constitution out of the country.

This is serious s___ going on, and it's not something we can think about tomorrow: it's taking place today. It's time we start voting in people who understand what the constitution and privacy are really about, and run the fascists out of Washington.

I presume the Obama Administration is using drones in places where US occupation is unpopular in the US. By being able to increase drone usage, Obama will be able to take out military personnel from places like Pakistan while still being able to maintain US presence. This strategy being used in East and North Africa is disturbing, and should be a red flag regarding US foreign policy in Africa. China has its eyes on Africa as well; I foresee a lot happening in African countries' not so distant future.

As for the comment regarding using drones as part of homeland security - I can't help but think of George Orwell's 1984 when I picture drones circling overhead my family's house in the future in the name of "homeland security." I have never heard of the Unmanned Systems Caucus before, but I sure hope it won't be successful.
