Cue the Shock: Trump's Next Move

There has been considerable speculation about whether Trump is a student of methods used by the Nazis to gain power in Germany.  His personal behavior and manipulative political actions seem to be following in Hitler’s footsteps. Analysis of the methods used to create the Third Reich shows patterns of actions and events that closely mirror what we see happening today in America under Trump’s direction.

At the conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials it was felt that the terrible lessons learned from analyzing what the Nazis thought and how they came to power gave incentive to prevent anything like their regime from ever rising up again. Sad to say, the virus of wanton tyranny was not fully eliminated.  It was only tamped down and repressed.  It found hidden places to grow and infect anew.  Its largely hidden but steady growth can be traced in the writings of Ayn Rand, the government change experiments of economist Milton Friedman, George Bush’s destructive shock and awe transgressions in Iraq, and the election of Donald Trump to be President of the United States.

Although expressed in different literary terms, the social postulates offered in the  writings of Ayn Rand after WWII were basically identical to those formulated and applied by the Nazis.  Prominent American economist Milton Friedman recognized that Rand’s exclusive and excluding pronouncements actually contained the fundamental aims of the Nazi regime.  He realized that the individualist doctrines embedded in The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged were what power seekers everywhere wanted to hear.

From his position as a professor at the University of Chicago Friedman designed a program to rapidly change existing governments to the free market design he claimed was validated by his research.  Friedman and his U. of C. students of free market economics were able to spread this illusion around the world as scientifically proven gospel.  They educated and coached powerful dictators like Augusto Pinochet as he tried to implement it with “shock and awe” in the stunned South American country of Chile.

While Friedman’s design does work to create instant change that is welcomed by a few, it comes at a terrible price for many.  Those who refuse to comply must submit as required or be eliminated. Torture and killing are seen as necessary actions to create the conditions for full and unwavering support of unregulated “free market” capitalism under the oversight of responsible elites.  More than thirty thousand resisters were “disappeared” during the guided application of the design in Chile.  At Friedman’s direction the governments of many nations around the world, e.g. Argentina, Bolivia, China, Poland, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Russia were lured or coerced into economic traps that made them beholden to the exploitative power of United States corporations.  He was aided in these ventures by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.  All of this and much more took place beyond the awareness of most U.S. citizens but has been documented in great detail by award-winning journalist and social activist Naomi Klein in her groundbreaking book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.

It is important to note that the ailing government of Russia was among those to which Friedman’s “Chicago School” program was applied. The results were economic disaster for most ordinary Russians and exponential increases in the wealth of a chosen few.  In September of 1999, the country was hit with a series of mysterious terror attacks. More than three hundred people were killed.  That set the stage for a fast takeover by the country’s iron-handed prime minister, Vladimir Putin, in the same way the stage was set was set 66 years earlier for Hitler’s takeover in Germany.

Both Trump and Putin are well informed about how Friedman’s design works to eliminate democratic controls and make a government accept swift change to a free market system managed by elites. Trump has taken unsettling preliminary steps following “Chicago School” guidelines that could just as well be derived from records of Nazi aims and accomplishments.  His extreme cabinet appointments, raving tweets, and numerous “shoot from the hip” executive orders have left a large portion of the American public angry and apprehensive. They are concerned that he might stage an event like the burning of the Reichstag in Berlin that vaulted Hitler and the Nazis to power, as a prelude to activating changes he and Putin would like to see.  In view of the disturbing trend of Trump’s actions Noam Chomsky, Professor Emeritus of MIT and renowned sage, speculated in recent interview: “I think we shouldn’t put aside the possibility that there would be some kind of staged or alleged terrorist attack which can change the country instantly.” https://chomsky.info/20170327

If Trump does make such a move it will be swift and designed to create extreme chaos.  The aim will be to induce mind-numbing confusion and fear.  If that happens, Chomsky advises that we must not allow ourselves to drown in despair.  Instead, we must stay alert, prepare to stand fast, and be ready to organize our resources for effective resistance until the deadly virus of disaster capitalism has been put back in its box.
