The Worm that Flies in the Night

O rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy,
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

-- William Blakc

The enraged and transcendentally corrupt Bill Clinton described Bernie
Sanders as believing in a "hermetic shield" -- in other words, it is unrealistic and naive to insist on a demarcation between corrupt bribe-taking (speech payments of $200,000+ per speech from Goldman Sachs) and running for President. The Clintons believe, on the contrary, in a flowing river of slidge between corruption and policy. No hermetic shield in their world! I hope the people of color, and the American voters as a whole, are on to them by now. No wonder Hillary gets abysmal ratings in the categories of "trust" and "honest." Obscenely greedy and power-hungry, yes; honest; no.

Why is Mr. Clinton so enraged? For the same reason Claggart, in Melville’s Billy Budd, is enraged by Billy. Billy is honest and has no understanding of the world of corruption and lies Claggart is committed to. For the same reason that Iago wants to destroy Othello. Perhaps the best literary expression of this is William Blake’s The Sick Rose. My daughter, a Brooklyn teacher, described Mr. Sanders as a “once-in-a-lifetime politician.” He seems too good to be true, and he threatens to take away the Clintons’ world of politics as usual. In 2008, Hillary was “Annie Oakley” – in favor of guns and hunting. Now that the climate of opinion has changed, she is against guns altogether. In the twentieth century, she was for universal healthcare; now, trying to ride into the White House on President Obama’s coat tails, she is for the ACA. (In no way am I denigrating President Obama, who I think goes down as a great president. He has an awesome record, when you consider the scorched-earth opposition he has had to deal with, in Congress. But now it is time to press on, as Mr. Sanders insists.) Mr. Sanders threatens to take away the Clintons’ world of entitlement and corruption – a world which has been their raison d’etre for some time now.

The Clintons are the “invisible worm that flies in the night.” But enough English-teacher poetry! I hope the voters, as a whole, wake up and realize how promising Bernie Sanders is! He is authentic. What you see is what you get, and he is aiming to make our government work for all of us, not merely the 1%.
