Commentary: The Poverty of Ignorance

Once again, the United States has shown its penchant for political insanity with the Republicans' sweep of the House and Senate in mid-term elections; the GOP thus controls Congress.

Given the GOP's fight against policies that could benefit the working class, it is quite amazing that members of it could vote Republican. There is a grotesque ignorance among these people which knows no bounds. For example, not knowing the differences between the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution, the rivalries amongst the U.S. founders, e.g., the Democratic Republicans vs the Federalists and the meaning of the Second Amendment. A large part of it has to do with Republican scare tactics, which have sadly worked among their supporters: the fear of taxes being raised (even though the idea is to raise them on the rich), the fear of "big gubberment" and the fear of a terrorist horde invading U.S. shores.

Although GOP supporters have favored raising the minimum wage, they will probably be conned again by their leaders, who have been dead set against raising it. Democrats have been trying to raise the minimum wage in the face of Republican resistance. Thus, the electorate's choice in the elections is bizarre, indeed.

Now that the Republicans have a majority in Congress, its religiously fanatical, billionaire and Tea Party wings will attempt to have a field day, shaping policies to fit their medieval/laissez faire/imperial agenda. President Obama will have to practice the art of applying the veto (rather than use his art of compromise).

Meanwhile, the citizenry, like GOP supporters, may experience serious consequences for their ignorance. After all, the GOP is a major threat to the interests of the "commoners."
