The Gay Debate

Recently, a billboard emerged in Virginia which shows twin male brothers with the words: “Identical twins. One gay. One not. We believe twins research studies show nobody is born gay.” (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/nobody-is-born-gay-proclaims-us-gay-cure-groups-billboard-9919826.html)

Interesting to note, the sole male model used on the billboard (not actually a twin, the advertisement just shows two different images of him) has come out and not only identified himself as being gay, but also stated that he strongly objects to the billboard’s hateful message and intent. (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/12/twin-from-nobodys-born-gay-billboard-i-am-gay-and-im-not-a-twin/)

There has long been a debate going on about whether or not gay people are ‘born that way’ or if sexual orientation is some sort of choice. The GLBT community often engages homophobes (in this country, typically Christians) on this issue.

But it’s a mistake to distract the discussion away from one of equality toward one of birth. Addressing the issue in this way opens the debate up to conflicting studies and interpretations. It welcomes the inclusion of pseudo-science and religious belief. It is the wrong conversation to have.

So, how should someone reply when asked if gays are ‘born that way’ or if they choose one particular orientation over another?

Simple answer.

“It’s none of your damn business.”
