MANILA, Philippines -- The All-Workers' Forum (AWF), a labor NGO (non-government organization) tells the Benigno S. Aquino III government to give Filipino workers economic freedom.

The statement was issued in line with the celebration of the 115th Anniversary of the Philippine Independence from Spain, June 12th, Philippine date.

Atty. Joseph T. Entero, AWF president said, the Aquino government must create programs and initiatives to ensure economic freedom for workers in all industries, saying that "creators of wealth deserve their portion of the pie."

"As we commemorate the National Independence Day, we should also remind ourselves that the majority of the Filipinos who participated in the revolution against the tyrannical rule of the Spaniards here, belong to the working class. For that, the working class, the masa, is to be honored for their heroic deeds, by providing them economic, political, and social freedom that they deserve," says Entero, adding, "The Legislative, Executive, and Judicial departments should work hand-in-hand to realize the workers' dream of financial and political freedom."

He also urged for strengthening of the local industries, especially under the category of small and medium-scale enterprises, which employ more than 70% of the Filipino workforce.

He also said that the Philippine Congress should also review the existing laws and regulations pertaining to employment and the labor sector as a whole in order to fill-in the gap on salaries and wages, and to ensure that the laborer's rights are respected and their welfare, advanced.

"On the other hand, the speedy resolution of labor cases pending in National Labor Relations Commission, both at the Arbitration and Commission Proper, as well as in the Appellate and the Supreme Court, should also be ensured as the government’s service to the workers," he said.
