Remembering Kent State

I was proud to visit the Kent State campus in November 2003 and left a turquoise necklace on the sculpture (hope it's still there)

This year I was appalled to learn through casual interviews how many of the current generation know nothing about May 4, 1970...never even heard of it. As a songwriter and lyric poet, I put this into words:

The Fourth of May (CD Sutton II)

You're not gonna like this
But listen what I say
There are those who never heard of
The bloody Fourth of May
If you stand on the hillside
There's little you can say
Lighted markers remind us
That ev'ry Fourth of May

Should taste like cotton candy
As sweet as summer rain
We survived fine and dandy
But we still feel the pain

If you stand on the hillside
Look where once stood a crowd
Voices raised up in anger
So young strong and proud
There were signs there was chanting
"Peace Now" and "End the War"
"USA Get Out of Viet Nam Now" and
"What're we Fighting For?"

You faced the gas with a finger
And threw the canisters back
You met the guns with your voices
And then the day turned black
Oh the day turned black

Choose not to martyr
These children doubly so
Names on markers remind us what happens
When you piss off the status quo
I don't care if you like this
But listen what I say
Teach your children to
Teach their children
What happened here that day

Just like in late November
So is the Fourth of May
I know you will remember...
