Politics for Fun and Profit

In case you had any doubt, it is obvious that a great many members of Congress see politics as a chance to get rich at the expense of duped voters. The Clintons are certainly no exception. Photographs have a way of being worth a thousand words. Bill is delighted to be in a cozy relationship with Michael Bloomberg (worth – who knows? – the area of $40 billion) and Donald Trump ($4 billion, give or take?). And then there is the photograph of the two war criminals George W. Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton, with Hillary nestling happily in the arms of W. How seriously are we supposed to take any of Hillary’s stated positions?

I will hereby make a horrible prediction. All of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s and The New York Times’ obvious machinations to make Hillary the Democratic nominee will serve her party in a terrible fashion when Trump beats Hillary. In effect, Debbie and the Times will give us Trump as President. Hillary has way too much baggage. Does anyone doubt that, the way Trump campaigns, he will miss any of it? We’re going to hear all about Hillary’s sexist comments about Monica Lewinsky and about Hillary’s support of all of our idiotically wasteful military invasions: Iraq, Lybia, Syria, and Afghanistan. I think Trump will mop up the floor with Hillary. Her carefully filtered focus-grouped positions will avail her nothing against Trump’s style of campaigning. Because he has authenticity and starch, Bernie would be a much better adversary. His genuineness would come through clearly in debate, just as clearly as would Hillary’s phoniness.

And after it is all over, win or lose, the Clintons will be back to their lucrative cozy social climbing with Trump, the Bushes, et al. The Boehners, Ryans, and McConnells of the world will also continue with the good political life. And, as Alexander Pope says at the end of The Dunciad, in addressing Dullness and Stupidity,

Lo! thy dread empire, Chaos is restored;
Light dies before thy uncreating word:
Thy hand, great Anarch! lets the curtain fall;
And universal darkness buries all.

If it isn’t yet too late, voters need to figure out that their best interest lies in supporting Mr. Sanders.
