Passages

Beloved Friends,

Life is not only a passage but it is many passages. It is a pilgrimage and an exploration of the very essence of being. No matter what religion or philosophy or ideology we all are set within a great rainbow of colours. We all play in the eternal symphony that is life. Perhaps memories are the notes and our genetic chemistry the instruments. Without a doubt age is often the conductor and events planned or unplanned the baton.

We live in a culture that worships youth, status, power, and image. We deny the reality of aging in every conceivable fashion. We refuse to honour the wisdom of elders and choose rather to paint eldership as something comically and bothersome. When I was growing up the extended family was the rule and the nuclear one the exception. When parents became grandparents they had all the support that the family could give them. Many because of this support were able to live at home as a treasured and valued member of the circle of life and were productive and active until their deaths. That sadly is by in large no longer the case. Now families are scattered hither and thither and aging parents are often consigned to "retirement communities" if they have the money or to "nursing facilities" if they do not. In instances where people are fortunate enough to live in their own homes until the great passage from this world to the next there is a marked difference in the quality of life as well as the quantity.

As true as all this is Life is not an academic exercise. It is being. It defies categories and definitions as well as labels and even time itself. As we come to see this we can began to understand the true nature of passion, of attraction, and meaning. But this ultimately must be a conscious choice on our part. We are connected and interconnected with Life and therefore God whether we know it or not but it is only when we say yes to Life that we can say yes to God; and this "yes" is most complete in and through the active interconnectedness of our life with the ongoing life of Christ.

We are quickly approaching Lent which is a circular passage for we are constantly experiencing the preparation and the reality of the Resurrection sometimes daily. I want to leave you with this passage from Lamentations which I want you to meditate on especially the words "steadfast" "love" "mercies" "new" "morning" and "faithfulness". How do you see the reality of the meaning of these words? How do see them played out on the stage of our living?

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, /his mercies never come to an end, /they are new every morning,/ great is your faithfulness" Lamentations 3:22-23

Peace
