Get Antibiotics Off the Farm

By The New York Times | Editorial

20 August 12

arlier this month, a federal magistrate judge in New York told the Food and Drug Administration to quit dillydallying on its three-decade effort to curb indiscriminate use of antibiotics in farm animals to spur their growth. He set a timetable for the agency to follow in withdrawing two important drugs - penicillin and two forms of tetracycline - from widespread use in animals. The trouble is, that timetable will give the F.D.A. five more years to complete the process.

The feeding of antibiotics in small doses to entire herds or flocks to promote rapid weight gain poses a serious threat to human health. The constant dosing promotes the emergence of germs that are resistant to veterinary drugs and to the very similar drugs used in humans. That raises the risk that when humans are infected by the germs, the medicines they rely on will be less effective.

The F.D.A. had proposed long ago to start proceedings to remove antibiotics from use on farms (except to treat sick animals) unless manufacturers could prove that such usage would not promote drug-resistant microbes. But no hearings were ever scheduled. Then the agency decided that it could make faster progress against a broader range of drugs by gaining the voluntary cooperation of drug makers and animal producers to limit usage.

The agency argued in court that it would be a burden for it to prepare for and hold hearings when it was already pursuing what it deems a more fruitful voluntary approach. But the judge held that it should be able to do both at the same time. If the F.D.A. appeals that decision, we hope the Second Circuit Court of Appeals will uphold it and find some way to shorten the time period for the F.D.A. to reach final conclusions.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

The problem with drugging these animals with antibiotics goes even deeper. See my post:

I knew that 80% of antibiotics produced in this country weren't consumed by humans but now I know which ones.
Another 5 years is ridiculous! Most people can't afford organic meats and poultry or even shop at the places that offer "antibiotic free or hormone free" products.
What, the drug companies haven't made enough money on drugs whose R and D have been paid for decades ago?

Get the Antibiotics and Hormones out of our meat and food products (milk, eggs, etc) NOW, we don't have time to wait for more people to be made ill and/or die.

We have disgusting sociopaths running government, industry, and banks. Come the revolution, when many heads will roll, and unfortunately, many of those will be off decent people. I foresee great calamity ahead.

The USA is divided - revolution means Civil War - hope in regime change - but it must be peaceful - violence escalates violence, we MUST be smarter than that.

More of this complete BS of voluntary compliance by industry! What a very old and stupid joke! Industry never has and never will voluntarily police itself about anything and especially not something they believe increases their profits or lowers their costs.
All voluntary compliance succeeds in doing is allowing industry to delay whatever is trying to be accomplished.

Mar 25, 2012 – World Health Organisation leads calls for urgent action as inadequate ... The fight against new, ANTIBIOTIC-resi stant strains of tuberculosis has ...
US ingenuity (but Chinese are beating US) MAXIMIZING short term profit and building 1% oligarchy - US totalitarian state.
Example: US scientists - most of them corporate xx - gave US new "improved" super rat poison D-Con when rats adopted to the original - previous version ... now predators (coyote, owls, hawks ..) are dying eating infected rats - there is less predators and more rats as a consequence - sure that the poison moves up the chain - to humans.
Bacteria - like tuberculosis - are adopting to antibiotics - kill some people - industry will come with super- antibiotics - patents, profits will skyrocket .. and Catch 22 of profit maximization will continue ..

I am allergic to tetracycline and had no idea that I could be getting the drug by eating. Also, if these drugs promote weight gain could it be behind the current American trend toward obesity?

If you worry about the chemicals in animals, think about meat fat and protein, milk and all oils in food are the main causes, of Cancer, Heart Disease, and Diabetes. Chemicals just make it worse. Thank the Dept of Agriculture, the NIH, the AMA, and the FDA for their lies. -- New World Order is using the World Trade Org, to make it worse, for people world wide, and to make MORE PROFITS. -- Lucky us.
