Sochi Hotel Guests Complain About Topless Portraits of Putin in Rooms

By Andy Borowitz, The New Yorker

09 February 14

The article below is satire. Andy Borowitz is an American comedian and New York Times-bestselling author who satirizes the news for his column, "The Borowitz Report."

ith the Olympics underway, hundreds of visitors to Sochi are complaining that they checked into expensive hotel rooms only to find them decorated with seminude portraits of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The portraits, showing Mr. Putin shirtless and riding a variety of mammals, adorn the walls of virtually every hotel room constructed especially for the Olympics and were created at a cost of over two million dollars, Olympic officials said.

Tracy Klugian, who travelled from Ohio with his wife to attend the Sochi Games, said that he was appalled to find his hotel room dominated by a gigantic portrait of a shirtless Putin riding what appears to be a bear.

Said Mr. Klugian, “I did not travel thousands of miles just to be grossed out.”

For his part, President Putin has been dismissive of the complaints, today calling the hotel guests “babies who cry.”

“These people who are complaining about what is on their walls should be grateful,” he said. “At least they got one of the hotel rooms with walls.”

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

I can see why Putin hates the other gays. Most of them would have better ab development.

Maybe these photos are just in the rooms for the gay athletes.

Putin DID say he'd punish them!

They ARE being punished. Gay and lesbian advocates who are demonstrating are getting arrested.

'course, we know we are having a little humor, fun, appreciating satire. On the other hand, some Americans might actually see this satire as, err, "God's" truth. Too many Americans will believe anything, anybody. Even George Bush.

Putin pushed it too far this time. The cult of personality that rules Russia just needs to back off. Those rooms are rented by the wealthy elites of other countries who would much rather see their own leaders half-naked and holding a fishing pole. Get some Olympic spirit, Vladimir!!!

I do n't find the satire of Borowitz interesting news at all. I have stopped being a monthly donor due to this kind of junk being on the site.

Oh, get over it! What are you, just an angry guy/gal with no sense of humor at all? No one forced you to read Borowitz, which you already knew was satire. Yeeesh!

Hey, the best political commentary in the New Yorker has ALWAYS come from the excellent cartoons.

Quoting: "Said Mr. Klugian, “I did not travel thousands of miles just to be grossed out"

I didn't have to travel thousands of miles just to be grossed out! Ain't technology great. That pasty hunk of white flesh wasn't the best thing to see right before going to sleep last night, either.

Lotsa lulz, thanks Borowitz.

WAY too funny! As usual, I thought the article was real and got all upset, until I looked closer. I was like...OMG! Who wants to look at some old mans nasty nipples?! Now I'm laughing. I wonder if Putin will see this? Indeed...IS that a cross around his neck?!!!

Could that be a little cross around Vladimir's white neck? Just wondering. Maybe there's more to this guy than we think.

As usual , you say Putin, even in a satire, and all demons come out. Still traumatised by McCarthy ?

You mean those photos with the secret spy cameras embedded discreetly behind the eyes that transmit directly to the Kremlim?
