Enough Is Enough. We Don't Need More Tax Breaks for the Wealthy.

By Bernie Sanders, Bernie Sanders's Facebook Page

20 April 17

gain and again we are seeing that the American people do not support Donald Trump's extreme right-wing agenda. Trump and the Republican Party want to give trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the top 1 percent and large, profitable corporations. It's not just Democrats that are sick and tired of giving more tax cuts to the richest Americans, while most people work longer hours for lower wages. According to a new poll, Republicans said they were also bothered "a lot" by the fact that some wealthy Americans do not pay their fair share of taxes and that corporations are paying too little. Enough is enough. We don't need more tax breaks for the wealthy. We need to invest in the middle class of this country and make sure the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

DNC Chair Tom Perez, Bernie Sanders Are Kicking Off Democratic Unity Tour Today Josh Feldman | April 17th, 2017

Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been publicly criticizing the Democratic party for a while now, is kicking off a “unity tour” with DNC Chairman Tom Perez today.

Sanders supported Keith Ellison for the chairmanship, but after Perez won, the Vermont senator congratulated him and said, “It’s imperative Tom understands that the same-old, same-old isn’t working and that we must bring in working and young people in a new way.”

In fact, it was only just yesterday that Sanders said the Democrats should have “put more resources” into the Kansas special election last week.

Well, now he and Perez are traveling cross-country together, and it’s not just in blue states.

Today Sanders and Perez are going to be in Maine, and throughout the week they will be making stops in Kentucky, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. (You’ll notice that President Trump won most of those states.) It’s being called the “Come Together and Fight Back Tour.”

When the unity tour was first announced, a Washington Post report quoted Sanders as saying, “It’s absolutely absurd that the Democratic Party has turned its back on working people in literally half the country… This is part of our effort to revitalize the Democratic Party, to turn it into a grass-roots party.”

Thank you for including the story about the Bernie & Tom tour. The tour is a great idea. I know that isn't your point, but I don't know what your point is.

Sadly, with the thieves that hold the Majority in our Congress and White House, it's not likely to change any time soon. Their Greed knows NO boundaries and, not content to Lord it over most Americans who still MUST work for a living with barely a Living Wage, they seem determined to finish off the Middle Class sooner rather than later! They will have us on the Scrap Heap of History along with ALL of the Empire's whose Greed and Avarice overtook ANY Moral Compass they may have had, if EVER! Dear God,SAVE us from these "Knuckle-Dragge rs" and "ME FIRST-ers"!

Actually, if Trump & the Republicans in Congress & the Cabinet continue trying to destroy programs (& a certain crop) that people value, & to make the 1% wealthier & the rest of us (& our environment) worse off, they will allow Democrats & progressives take over in 2020, after making gains in 2018. And we'll have our greedy leaders on the scrap heap of history, instead of vice versa.

One way to make sure the wealthy pay their fair share is by setting a tax rate that reflects their wealth. Close loop holes and raise the top marginal tax rate to 70%.

The little defiant girl opposed to the bull on Wall street should include a bronzed French guillotine----- just as a reminder of what a tax break for the bejeweled might entail

Stop taxing 'income' and start taxing WEALTH! That's the best way to level the playing field. When was the last time a CEO punched a time clock?

The wealthy do not earn a living from a salary, save for a few in administrative positions in business and the like. Most of their wealth comes in investments and that is where the focus should be.

We need to move the focus away from the top tax rate, which is only the 'top' rate on the smallest amount of income at the top, while the first and lower brackets are taxed at the lower rate, even for the very wealthy. They are taxed at the low rate for the first tier, then up, and so on, and only get the top rate on the very top last amounts. Many people in America don't understand the basics on income taxes and many don't realize that investment income, where the vast fortunes are made, has a very low tax rate and we still have yet to tax electronic trades, where most trades are made today.
