The Could Care Less Party

ll of America should drop to its knees and thank the GOP for attempting to provide us with replacement fireworks. As you undoubtedly know, cities all over the country this year were forced to cancel Fourth of July festivities due to fear of fire, glitchy computers and twitchy bureaucrats. Like there's another kind.

The Republican House took great pains to salve our sensory-deprived souls by trying to set off enough indoor fireworks to make the San Diego Big Bay Bust look like a fluttering votive candle. It was designed to be a spectacular explosion fueled by ego, obstinacy and behavior so self-absorbed, the casual bystander might assume we were in the middle of an election year.

For the 33rd time, all House business slammed to a grinding halt to accommodate another vote to repeal Obamacare. Again. Thirty-three times. Let's look at that, shall we? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. 22. 23. 24. 25. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30. 31. 32. 33.

You got to give the majority party credit for being able to flog this dead horse without getting any flying bits on them. Thirty-three times is at least 32 times more than the administration ever tried to sell this bill to a public overwhelmingly in favor of its component parts.

They persevered even though everyone knows there's a better chance of flamingoes flying out of monkey butts than the Senate ever signing on. And getting past a presidential veto, substitute polka-dotted pterodactyls for the flamingoes.

As political theater goes, this sad summer-stock production fizzled with tired choreography and a script duller than Shakespeare in modern dress performed by third-graders in Mandarin. No wonder they keep trying to cut funding for the arts, they're deathly afraid of the competition.

They rationalized this particular Theater of the Absurd production by claiming the necessity to make a statement. And indeed a statement has been made. That Congress is broken and impotent and hopelessly in need of adult supervision. Even as we speak, you can hear their 8 percent approval rating clanking down the basement steps to unimagined depths. And they could care less.

It has been estimated this extended season of Cirque de Folly has taken up two cumulative weeks of business at a cost of $24 million a week. That's what it takes to keep the congressional gears oiled and moving. Nearly $50 million to hammer home a point more tedious than slogging through the instruction booklet for an Egyptian-made solar generator.

We're not even talking about more millions wasted to appease the base by blatantly restricting women's rights. This is all perfectly good money that could have been spent on further tax cuts for the rich. Even with inflation, $50 million worth of oil subsidies could go a long way. Any idea how many car elevators you could buy with that kind of money?

The official party line on Obamacare is "repeal and replace," but nobody has anything to replace it with. Ask for specifics and Republicans mumble and fidget and get as vague as Donald Trump talking about the importance of ethics while closing the deal.

First there was Romneycare, and now we got Obamacare, but if the hard-line conservatives get their way, this country is going to end up with We Don't Care. Less Care For You. Could Care Less. Just might have to rename these fiscally responsible charlatans as… The Care Less Party.

The careless party. Why doesn't the 'old' Republican party stand up? I think because money doesn't make much of a base. I think because these are the people who don't fight, who don't care, who really don't give a shit about the country. They care about themselves, always have. They will vote for someone who will go to bat for them; but they will never, never, never stand in the batter's box themselves. The Republican Party has let itself be hijacked by the Tea Party because of laziness and greed. You deserve what you've sowed. You thought you could slyly lead unsuspecting Americans down the primrose path-- and BOOM! they got you. I have to say as a Democrat it's fun to watch, if it wasn't so end of the world frightening. bon chance, a.

Mr. Durst, you mean "couldn't care less." Think about it: they don't care at all, so they couldn't care less, because there is nothing less than not at all.

Saying they *could* care less means that they do care some, which is quite the opposite of the point you were trying to make.

Seriously, are there no copyeditors employed in journalism, any more?

He's using a common phrase "I could care less?" (the answer to which is "no") as a literary device. No copy editor needed here.

Grammatically you are correct. But, Mr. Durst was actually using sarcasm of an esoteric sort. The phrase "Could care less" is commonly used in place of the proper "couldn't care less". So what Mr. Durst accomplished was to satirize the common usage by using it as a title to an article that means the complete opposite of the article's intent. Thereby satirizing not only the Republicans and their amazing ability to openly say what the listener wants to hear, but in actuality they say the opposite.

Hats of to Mr. Durst's clever use of English language and its extremely flexible communication modes.

Wa-al, at least while they're re-passing their repeat Repeal Obamacare obsession for the 33rd and then-some time, they're taking a break from their War Against Women campaign. Of course during that House break, the RP/TP Guvs are filling in with their own vaginal and uterine obsessions, so it isn't a total loss.

Maybe the Republicans should just pass a healthcare bill like the Democrats did. Then we can all see what is in it after it is passed. Isn't that what Pelosi said? We have to pass it to see what is in it? Also, they can just pass one without even reading it, just like Obamatax was done.

Maybe they could at least propose a health reform bill so we can actually understand what it is they don't like about the plan passed by the Democrats.

two step process, first repeal and then replace. Kind of like trying to fix up a house that is so badly damaged it is just better to demo it and start over.

You got it. I called Boehner's office and said everything you are doing is hurting the American people. Boehner, the "no jobs so be it" man and Cantor making profits on betting that our economy will fail. These guys are totally A moral as they enjoy their life long pensions, triple A health care for life and the millions they are getting from their corporate and billionaire benefactors. But now we have the TPP agreement and let Obama know that we will not be slave labor for the flood of foreign corporations that aim to make our laws impotent in the shadow of their rule. We cannot let our fate be in the hands of those who don't care about our lives!

Ridiculous. It doesn't need replacing. Simply lower the age of Medicare eligibility to zero, and patch up the leakage caused by compromises to the private medical insurance industry over the years, and we would have a first-class health care system that would rank with other industrialized countries. And at much less cost than either the current system or Obamacare, which is essentially a government guarantee of continued private insurance profiteering.

There is the rub in Roberts' decision. If he invalidated the mandate, the Dems had the option to pass new legislation next year that would be essentially the same as Obmamcare only Medicare would be enabled for all as a public option.
Roberts decision essentially disallows that from happening.
As happy as I was that Roberts swung over, he did leave behind some poison pills.

He was right. We now no longer have the freedom to NOT buy something. The federal govt under the tax clause can now force all of us to either buy something from another person or even an EVIL corporation or tax us if we don't. Sounds like we lost a lot of freedom to me.

IF the majority of Americans what single payer then why did the Dems not pass that when they were in complete control after the 2008 elections? If what you say is true, why did Barney Frank, when asked about that said he would love to do that but they don't have the votes? Maybe because the majority of Americans do not, in fact, what a single payer government run (Canadian/UK style) system.

I like it, "The Care Less Party" describes the GOP perfectly. They waste all their time trying to deprive us of health care just so they don't have to do any serious legislating. There are plenty of problems that need to be faced and our country needs help, but the CARE LESS PARTY could care less about what happens to the citizens who pay their wages, their Health Care and their Pensions. Their only goal has been to make the economy as bad as possible so they could blame Obama. We know who has been holding up any Bill that would help us, and it isn't Obama. They refuse to pass his Jobs Bill, as they don't want people to have jobs, they want them mad because they don't have jobs. Well, we know who isn't passing the Jobs Bill too, and it isn't Obama. If the Tbagging Rs had not been in charge of the House, we would be well on the road to recovery, millions more would be working and we, the people, would be much better off, some would still have homes, as they would have jobs. To the GOP, it was never about us.

The contributors herein who are pro-Obama or are liberals (or both) need to stop utilizing Tea-Party-backe d journalists' created phrases. Example: "Obamacare". The title of the legislation proclaims what the bill actually is and does - which is why the Tea Party journalists substitue what is supposed to be a "derogatory" phrase. Hence forth, tho' it takes a bit longer to type, use the REAL name: Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Use it! Disseminate it!

Obama himself accepted the moniker "Obamacare". He said yes, he does care. As an attempt at a derogatory phrase, it fails. The phrase TP Reps on the other hand, makes me think of another TP, a** wipes to big money. Americans love short phrases that roll easily off the tongue, and will quickly invent them if they don't exist. The best you could hope for is PPAACA, which just sounds like choking.

The Greed Obsessed Party will not offer anything approaching a plan to restructure our health insurance and delivery system, aside from the really scary provisions in the Ryan budget, because this party is no longer interested in legislation that addresses public concerns. The GOP is interested in nothing more than courting the 1% and all the political power money can buy.
