An Open Letter From Michael Moore

Dear President Obama,

I understand you may be looking to replace Rahm Emanuel as your chief of staff.

I would like to humbly offer myself, yours truly, as his replacement.

I will come to D.C. and clean up the mess that's been created around you. I will work for $1 a year. I will help the Dems on Capitol Hill find their spines and I will teach them how to nonviolently beat the Republicans to a pulp.

And I will help you get done what the American people sent you there to do. I don't need much, just a cot in the White House basement will do.

Now, don't get too giddy with excitement over my offer, because you and I are going to be up at 5 in the morning, 7 days a week and I am going to get you pumped up for battle every single day (see photo). Each morning you and I will do 100 jumping jacks and you will repeat after me:

"THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ELECTED ME, NOT THE REPUBLICANS, TO RUN THE COUNTRY! I AM IN CHARGE! I WILL ORDER ALL OBSTRUCTIONISTS OUTTA MY WAY! IF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DON'T LIKE WHAT I'M DOING THEY CAN THROW MY ASS OUT IN 2012. IN THE MEANTIME, I CALL THE SHOTS ON THEIR BEHALF! NOW, CONGRESS, DROP AND GIVE ME 50!!"

Then we will put on our jogging sweats and run up to Capitol Hill. We will take names, kick butts, and then take some more names. If we have to give a few noogies or half-nelson's, then so be it. In our pockets we will have a piece of paper to show the pansy Dems just how much they won by in 2008 - and the poll results that show the majority of Americans oppose the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and want the bankers punished. Like drill sergeants, we will get right up in their faces and ask them, "WHAT PART OF THE PUBLIC MANDATE DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND, SOLDIER?!! DROP AND GIVE ME 50!"

I know this is the job Rahm Emanuel was supposed to be doing.

Now, don't get me wrong. I have always admired Rahm Emanuel (if you don't count his getting NAFTA pushed through Congress in the '90s which destroyed towns like Flint, Michigan. I know, picky-picky.). He is what we needed for a long time - a no-apologies, take-no-prisoners fighting machine. Someone who is not afraid to get his hands dirty and pound the right wing into submission. Far from being the foul-mouthed bully he has been portrayed as, Rahm is the one who BEAT UP the bullies to protect us from them.

That's certainly what he did in 2006. After six long, miserable years of the middle-class getting slaughtered and the poor being flushed down the toilet, Rahm Emanuel took on the job of returning Congress to the Democrats. No one believed it could be done.

But he did it. Big time. He put the fear of God into the party of Rush and Newt. They had never been so scared. More importantly, though, he instilled a sense of hope in the Democrats that they could actually score the mother of all hat tricks in 2008 - and with you, an African American no less, in the pole position!

It worked. The Darkness ended. The vast majority of nation wept with joy on the night of the election (those who weren't weeping went out and bought a record number of guns and ammo). Unlike the last president, you didn't "win" by 537 votes in Florida (although Gore won the popular vote by a half-million), you beat McCain nationally by 9,522,083 votes! The House Democrats got a walloping 79-vote margin. The Senate Dems would caucus with a supermajority of 60 votes unheard of in over 30 years. The wars would now end. America would have universal health care. Wall Street and the banks would, at the very least, be reined in. Hardworking citizens would not be thrown out of their homes. It was supposed to be the dawning of a new age.

But the Republicans were not going to go quietly into the night. You see, instead of having just one Rahm Emanuel, they are ALL Rahm Emanuels. That's why they usually win. Unlike most Democrats, they are relentless and unstoppable. When they believe in something (which is usually themselves and the K Street job they hope to be rewarded with someday), they'll fight for it till the death. They are loyal to a fault to each other (they were never able to denounce Bush, even though they knew he was destroying the party). They dig their heels in deep no matter what. If you exiled them to a lone chunk of melting polar ice cap, they would keep insisting that it was just a normal "January thaw," even as the frigid Arctic waters rose above their God-fearing necks ("See what I mean - this water is COLD! What 'global *warming*'?! Adam and Eve rode dinos...aagghh!!... gulp gulp gulp").

We thought we were all done with this craziness, but we were mistaken. Like a beast that you just can't cage, the Republicans convinced not only the media, but YOU and your fellow Dems, that 59 votes was a *minority*! Precious time was lost trying to reach a "consensus" and trying to be "bipartisan."

Well, you and the Democrats have been in charge now for over a year and not one banking regulation has been reinstated. We don't have universal health care. The war in Afghanistan has escalated. And tens of thousands of Americans continue to lose their jobs and be thrown out of their homes. For most of us, it's just simply no longer good enough that Bush is gone. Woo hoo. Bush is gone. Yippee. That hasn't created one new friggin' job.

You're such a good guy, Mr. President. You came to Washington with your hand extended to the Republicans and they just chopped it off. You wanted to be respectful and they decided that they were going to say "no" to everything you suggested. Yet, you kept on saying you still believed in bipartisanship.

Well, if you really want bipartisanship, just go ahead and let the Republicans win in November. Then you'll get all the bipartisanship you want.

Let me be clear about one thing: The Democrats on Election Day 2010 are going to get an ass-whoopin' of biblical proportions if things don't change right now. And after the new Republican majority takes over, they, along with a few conservative Democrats in Congress, will get to bipartisanly impeach you for being a socialist and a citizen of Kenya. How nice to see both sides of the aisle working together again!

And the brief window we had to fix this country will be gone.

Gone.

Gone, baby, gone.

I don't know what your team has been up to, but they haven't served you well. And Rahm, poor Rahm, has turned into a fighter - not of Republicans, but of the left. He called those of us who want universal health care "f***ing retarded." Look, I don't know if Rahm is the problem or if it's Gibbs or Axelrod or any of the other great people we owe a debt of thanks to for getting you elected. All I know is that whatever is fueling your White House it's now running on fumes. Time to shake things up! Time to bring me in to get you pumped up every morning! Go Barack! Yay Obama! Fight, Team, Fight!

I'm packed and ready to come to D.C. tomorrow. If it helps, you won't really be losing Rahm entirely because I'll be bringing his brother with me - my agent, Ari Emanuel. Man, you should see HIM negotiate a deal! Have you ever wanted to see Mitch McConnell walking around Capitol Hill carrying his own head in his hands after it's just been handed to him by the infamous Ari? Oh, baby, it won't be pretty - but boy will it be sweet!

What say you, Barack? Me and you against the world! Yes we can! It'll be fun - and we may just get something done. Whaddaya got to lose? Hope?

Retardedly yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. Just to give you an idea of the new style I'll be bringing with me, when a cornhole like Sen. Ben Nelson tries to hold you up next time, this is what I will tell him in order to get his vote: "You've got exactly 30 seconds to rescind your demand or I will personally make sure that Nebraska doesn't get one more federal dollar for the rest of Obama's term. And then I will let everyone in your state know that you wear Sooner panties, backwards. NOW DROP AND GIVE ME 50!"

Michael, Michael,

You are so right. Oh that Obama would accept. What if we turn your letter into a petition. Do you thin 100,000,000 would possibly move him to bring in the cot and give you a mike.

Maybe if you got a hair cut, he'd change his mind....

Your offer to President Obama is highly appreciated, Michael, but I doubt that he will take the offer. You see, he will first seek a "bipartisanship" vote from the republicans in his own party and than "negociate" with the Party of Evil(GOP)by giving them more than they deserve.

I am beginning to think the president is a big phony just like most of his advisors are. Frankly speaking, I don't think he has the spine to be president of the USA, although back in 2008 he bragged, promised, lied by committing himself to democratic principles and the people believed him.

One think for certain is, President Obama wouldn't want me on his side when he's speaking with Mitch McConnell, I'm just liable to slap the closest sorry hypocrite conservative republican in the group.

Michael,
The sad state of affairs is this, not even your letter can get me moving again. I am now fully ensconced in the Leonard Cohen camp of "Everybody Knows" and there is n't going to be anything done by anyone except keep lining their own pockets and making suire they remain members in good status of
the "Millionaires who got here by royally screwing the American Public Club." I'm not even sure at this point Michael that you aren't on their payroll. Status quo. Good bye America, you were a nice idea while it lasted. Oh wait, did you ever have a snowball chance in hell? Not yet at least and I'm over holding my breath. Blue is not my color.

That's some pretty good stuff. I would hire you. But then again, I know I have a spine. So here is a point Mike: If Obama doesn't take you up on your offer (seeing you in a jogging suit would do it for me), how about you get together with a few of us REAL progressives right here in Michigan and lets see if we can put you into a state office. Seems like your tactics would still work. Seriously dude. Still have my phone number?

As obnoxious at Michael Moore is, I have to agree with him on this one. President Obama is too goddam conciliatory. I can’t help but wonder if the reason is that he is taking seriously, the death threats from the Tea Party and their ilk. I was astonished when I heard Rush Limbaugh call for his death on his broadcast, yet no action taken. There are some who should be deprived of their First Amendment rights. There have been sedition acts in the past (the Bush administration practiced sedition with dictatorial zeal). Time for some sedition now, at least until the country is repaired from all the damage done to it by George, and by George.

Blondy,

Where can I hear this Rush Limbaugh call for Obama's death? YouTube? What date?

It was last Summer, I was stuck in traffic and searching my radio for KOA (Denver) for a traffic report. I only "exactly" remember where my car was on the road at the time. I about choked on my gum. I searched the news for any reaction, but it went unacknowledged and unreported. Hopefully ignoring Rush Limbaugh is a trend.

Dear Michael.

Since the President will not accept your humble offer, maybe because he is still too loyal to Rahm, or because he can't get rid of his bipartisan obsession (in which case he needs therapy), let me propose the following to you: Would you consider running for President in 2016, after the Republicans take back the White House in 2012?

As Obama was accepting the Nobel peace prize he was defending the architect of torture in a San Francisco federal court. He has not closed Gitmo, or stopped transporting "suspects" to illegal foreign prisons nor has he abolished the Patriot Act and given us back our habeas corpus. Obama is owned and operated by Israel and it's Zionists.

Hope Obama takes your advice! Why not universal health care? Most of us want it. Why not at least try to get it--or at the very least, the public option? We are supposed to be a democracy but big money, not the people call the shots.

Not only do I think that Obama is not the populist president that he pretends to be...I think he is a corporate animal, and is determined to look after the welfare of business interests ahead of Joe Public.
I wish it weren't so, but he has to convince me otherwise. The man has no fight in him. Where is our Public Option?
Where is fighting for the little guy?

Michael, I think that your offer might actually be serious! Since Obama has demonstrated such political cowardice that his presidency is now boarding on incompetence, and...gasp...we are now at risk of more and more power being turned over to the very people who have so clearly orchestrated our destruction in the first place, it really is time for someone like you to go to Washington. But then Obama is probably beyond reform now. I like him but good lord, is there a Democrat with back bone left? Does Obama have a pair?

Thank you Mr. Moore! This is a brilliant idea and you are right the window of opportunity to change directions is small. And the persons jumping through that window now have to make a big splash. Many people are going "ho-hum" with the way things are going. We want to see action and are very tired of demos handing out their hands to be chopped off so willingly and smiling as this happens. It feels like our elected officials are not listening to us at all- the government they are running is for themselves only.

Dear Mike,
I like your offer. I do realize that there is a slim possibility that Obama will turn you down. But in the event that he does here's my suggestion for plan "b". Go back to documentaries with,
"the Obama presidencey" as your next subject. Your movies movies are a great contribution to what is left of American political/social dialog. If being the subject of your movie doesn't inspire him "to grow a pair", nothing else is likely to do the job. We need to know and remember how we got into the total mess that we will be in after the GOP has made sure Obama accomplishes NOTHING!
Please consider and let us see this congress in action NOW!

Michael. I am better qualified and already made that suggestion. I got the same answer you may get, nothing. The person who needs to really be replaced is Obama, for following reasons. He is demonizing Chavez, he is seeking dynastic wealth and lifelong celebrity as the First Black President, instead of trying harder to become the Second FDR. His efforts on anything of importance to his voter base, are lame, and his efforts on the part of the super wealthy are tantamount to Herculean. He has spent more money helping nations with illicit drugs sales as their primary source of income, he has expanded the wars, he has ignored the more than doubling of the price of oil since December 2008 ($1.44) He renewed the Patriot Act, and the MCA-2006 is still in force. He is a traitor to those who supported him and will never again see my vote. I don’t vote for cowards and he seems the clone of GW Bush.We needed FDR #2, and we got a Wannabe on the make. Michael Moore has yet to acknowledge that most politicians are criminals with law degrees and need to replaced with publicly elected representatives of the people, instead of special interest groups. How can any bill written by the lobbies of the corporations be good for anyone but profits? Just look at how wealthy Max Bauchas has become try to "reform" health care! Or Barney Frank and Chris Dodd trying to "reform" finance laws. These guys should be in jail, not running a country.

I was among those who wept on election night. Now I feel like weeping for an entirely different reason. Obama has backpeddled on so many of his promises. With the Dems in control of both houses, he has lost his chance to accomplish anything historic. He's intelligent, not inept, cares about the common people (the polar opposite of his predecessor). So why has he caved in? I'm far from a conspiracy theorist, but I'm beginning to think he's a plant, an internal fifth column.
It will soon be too late for this country. Unless Michael Moore rides to the rescue! (cavalry trumpets sound). Somebody do SOMETHING!!

Yes, all the Repugs and many of the Demos are in the pocket of wealthy corporate donors. The system is corrupt and dysfunctional. But: Let's pass the best med bill we can now, hopefully reversed engineered with a public option, and then work to achieve universal health care in the future by expanding Medicare down in age until it includes everyone. The Repugs want us to get distracted by and hung up on their relentless naysaying, corruption, and greed. Instead, let's keep our eyes on the prize(s) and continue to work for the common good. No, I'm not naive. I prefer to focus on getting things done instead of getting hung up on the lies and squid ink of the opposition, who will NEVER be anything but saboteurs.

Funny thing is Michael that I, like many foreigners, also wept on your election night. Well I almost wept - we don't weep in Australia we just sniffle a bit.
Under Bush, the World for the first time in my memory began to sneer at the U.S.A.. I think we all were astonished at how you could have possibly elected such a no hoper. When I first clocked Bush I realised what had happened to the Alfred E Neuman of my youth - he changed his name to George W Bush. I once had a dog with eyes as close set as that and he was a mean stupid dog. I ended up having to shoot him. By the way NRA many years ago the Oz government bought everybodys guns. You know what - the roof didn't fall in and murders are down!
Must admit I feel let down by the promise of Obama but Obama is a reasonable man. A reasonable man would think that the GOP and the Iranian and Israeli governments are reasonable men also. Obama is also an intelligent man - from here on you'll see his spine.

I told you back in '08 that Obama's feet had to be held to the fire to make him commit to more than "hope and change". After the election, his choice of Rahm Emanuel - the architect of the centrist wing of the Democratic Party - was a strong signal from the gitgo that he had no intention of steering to the left. Despite the ongoing sturm und drang, the differences between the Republicans and the Democrats are minuscule. At the end of the day the billions of dollars of lobbying / campaign contribution money are what dictate policy, no matter which party is in charge.

Great idea to replace Rahm Emanuel with Michael Moore or anyone who would let unbiased truth into DC & maybe to the American people too. The President should forget bipartisanship. Instead insist on legislation as promised. If Congress wants to go against the wishes of the people, expose individual defection & let them pay the price in Nov. Defend program rather than ignoring false attack ads. Document changes in legislation inspired by corporate or foreign influence demonstrating disloyalty to constituents. Once the extent of corporate & foreign influence is exposed a campaign to replace all corrupt officials with independent candidates can be mounted. When the people finally gain control legislation publically funding political campaigns & freeing the news of corporate influence must be passed immediately. Recall legislation in every state will keep politicians focused on the people’s business not their own pocketbook. Without policy change the status quo will return in 2 yrs.

so far so good - there is only one big problem Michael. Rahm only does as the Prez tells him to do. So when the going is good its the Prez's glory. When the going is bad - its Rahms fault.

My only solace is that I did not vote for this sharlatan Obama. He does not care what happen to America - its mor important to him to be a black Prez. If he continous his reign of lies - we can be damn well sure that he was the only black president, without any other black president ever in power again. I see Obama as an egotistical Uncle Tom.

Hey MM. I'm from SD, red state. Hard to live here due to the lack of education. Rather than research issues for yourself most folks here get the truth from FOX or the right wing newspapers. Until we as a nation value education, we will continue to slide back to the middle ages. We just had a bill proposed here that would limit how science is taught.... 'too much global warming talk' they say. Gads. We need the scientific community to GET REALLY LOUD. LOUD! LOUDER!! SUPER LOUD. They know their stuff and need to be heard. NOW. I'm astonished at Obama's lack of rallying them to help. Statisticians! Where are you? Take on FOX. Hey! Someone rich! Start a NEW BROADCAST COMPANY! PUT THE DATA OUT THERE and put it out there BIG. The politicians getting in the way have an easily swayed base that needs things EXPLAINED to them... CLEARLY and LOUDLY. Loudly to wake up the common sense that we all have that America needs to do better. Thanks Michael. You've done so much to educate... keep it up.

Get a Peace of the Action and march in the millions in DC and your towns and cities. It is our civic duty to protect our freedoms in intelligent and compassionate ways, but we better get on it NOW! Michael Moore writes the truth ... he clouds it in humor, but it is the truth. We have been betrayed by Obama, and how we all worked to get him elected! As Frank Rich said today in the NYT, we elected Obama to LEAD. We did not elect him to be bipartisan. The immediate future will tell us whether he realizes: Lead or we are doomed! This has been one of the greatest disappointments ever. If the heads have to roll in the Oval Office, so be it. But this country is waiting for universal health care, new jobs creation, regulation of Wall St. NOW IS THE TIME!!

SDSUE at 19:13 has a good idea. I thought this country would never get to a place where a network like FOX would be able to espouse 24/7 lies and misinformation and get away with it. Since we can't seem to control them, WHERE IS OUR VOICE on the other side of the issues?

Michael Moore is one of our truest and bravest voices and I thank him so much for being there. I so never wanted to be disappointed at President Obama but I'm starting to feel even more depression than I felt under Bush. I don't think that Obama is as evil as the Bush administration but I'm feeling some of the same anger that Michael is expressing. I still hope and pray, even though I'm not religious.

I believe (do not know this to be fact) that all Elected Presidents of the United States of America ( since J.F.Kennedy)and the Leaders of many countries are bound by principals set by BIG Business - under threat of bodily harm to they and their family members.
What other explanation could there be for their back-stepping their stated proposals? I sincerely hope this is not due to their own lack of allegiance to the population that elected them to their office.

Better late than never. Our President should have picked you to be his personal advisor right after he swore in. Love and blessings to you and your family, Judith

Of course this would be great, but why
jump into the cesspool, Michael? Thomas Naylor of Second Vermont Republic secesssion movement says the US is "unfixable". All we need to do is wait a little. Peter Edler, Stockholm

That's a good idea, Michael. The problem is that Obama is a one term president. I feel that to turn this country around, is for you to hook up with Ron Paul as the VP running mate for 2012. Ron Paul is the only Constitutionali st person in government and the two of you would make a great fit for a change to American greatness.

Your words add courage to the less than workable situation, maybe skip the jumping jacks and just jack up all the lazy politicians. Where have all the words gotten us with no action or follow thru, if a company was run like this government it would be out of business, also. So sorry about Obama, I held so much faith in him! Thanks for the message today!

Oh Michael, if only YOU were Prez... Meanwhile, maybe Ari can get this letter to him somehow, or you can... Either way, make it happen. Obama NEEDS to READ THIS...He better kick some serious ass before November. What also worries me is the tendency of Dems to not vote in Congressional elections, while the Repugs of course come out in droves. Hopefully people will get out & vote for the Dems because the alternative is unacceptable at best and disastrous at worst. And btw for Rahm to be now turning on the LIBERALS in Congress––our last true representatives ––is indeed a disappointing irony.

Michael has stated exactly what I have been thinking for some time. If only this could happen and if only the Democrats could get some kohanes and call out the Republicans for what they are. The Republicans hate America and want it to fail. I don't know who makes me more angry...the Reublican lunatics or the Democrats who have no balls.

Michael Moore, you're an idiot!!! It is not the government that made this country great, it is freedom. The government cannot and has never fixed anything. Why in the world would anyone ever want them to take over our health care system? They'll only that up along with everything else they've trashed. Pubs or Dems, the only way they'll fix it is by allowing free enterprise the freedom to fix it itself. Idiots, all of them, including Michael Moore

The only thing that makes sense to me is that someone must have threatened the lives of Obama and his family, or knows where his skeletons are buried. Why else the cosmic cop-out?

What the prof says goes. Obama is a black man on the make. A ready tool of the establishment who knows what side his bread is buttered on. He and his operaters also are smart enough to know that the have nots dont vote. They are playing to a very narrow demographic. As for another FDR, he was am anomoly, a Blue blood chastened by polio. He knew his class and didnt need them to make himself rich. He already was. And dont forget the value system was slightly different then. Public service during the New Deal was understood to be just that.

Another think is Obama may be black, but hes not pink. He is solidly center, why was there ever any confusion? If you wanted change, elect Howard"screaming"Dean.
In fact his race hurts the cause. He cant be publically critised for fear of losing the black voters, and he is plain hated by white racists in both parties. LBJ said the civil rights bill cost the democrats the White House for a generation. I think this is about to happen again
