@Robert_Landlum We tried term limits out here in Arizona--it was a disaster. You end up with newbies all the time--any institutional learning goes out the door with the experienced legislators, so you keep getting people who have no experience introducing the same failed ideas, over and over.

As usual, Keith knows what to say, how to say it and when, the only problem is...is that it should have been President Obama who made the speech!

Additionally, an urgent plea to that all-seeing, all-knowing supreme entity in the sky (this was REALLY tongue-in-cheek ) please save us...from ourselves! It's not the politicians who are the gutless, self-serving wonders - it is the American electorate. Of course it doesn't help that we

are treated like mushrooms...fed bullshit and kept in the dark!

Doesn't it gall you, that it took a cartoon character to explain the dire situation to us?...Pogo.

You've got a point, tm7devils, as per Pogo, "We have met the enemy and he is US!" does ring true to some extent, however the deck has been stacked against the American People since Reagan's Administration and has only gotten worse over the years. Never in my lifetime have I seen Politicians ACTIVELY work towards the dissolution of our Political system as have these Cretins in the K.N.F.P. (Koch/Norquist Fascist Party)! They are ignorant fools and embrace the magical thinking of children by expecting that everything will all turn out alright because they SAY it will! They seem immune to facts or to the expert reasoning of well educated people who KNOW what will happen now that they've succeeded in pushing through their selfish and self-serving Agenda. Cutting spending at this most critical time in our History is INSANE. You HAVE to spend money to MAKE money, but the Banks, the Mega-wealthy and the Big Corporations are siting on their money rather than creating Jobs or helping Americans get back on their feet. I believe that the Justice Department should begin investigating these Miscreants and find out WHY they want this Country to FAIL rather than to allow this President to succeed. I can't WAIT for the finger-pointing and the Blame-game that will ensue when all their chickens, at last, come home to roost!

Urge your congress people and senators to pass Glass-Steagall at once. That the how FDR save the country in 1933, in the same situation. Under Obama, we are entering into a new Dark Age. It is up to us. The earth is changing. We are part of the same eco-system. We are changing, too. Make your voices heard. Glass-Steagall to start. Obama is prepared to veto it. Let's make it pass.

"First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

"Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

"Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

"Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me."

Pastor Martin Niemöller

Anybody will start speaking out? Communist are gone, trade unionist are going, going, almost gone... Change "Jews" for "the poor" and the "middle class" (and you are there if you are not in the top 5% income group) is next. Will be anybody left to speak up?

Thanks Keith, your comments are so valid with truth! The only way we can get back our government is act upon it. People elected as leadership will need to be reminded that the government is not their own private companies to run. We the people dictate and they listen and act upon what we say. . It seems they have forgotten this, so lets remind them like the people of France did with their government.

Well, thanks Keith for clarifying the "Deal" for the likes of me, who has be wading through the media gobbledygook. I've been trying to analyze it reasonably and carefully before my personal outrage-o-meter hit "full" but the "Super- Congress" concept especially, has me convinced that the "framers" (substitute y'r own term here for what seem to me to be "Croupiers" or "Dealers" for those who can afford to gamble with the rest of us and our ever-shrinking means, rights, freedoms and principals in attempting to found a democracy for and by ourselves as represented by those we put in power) are makin' it up as they go along!
Like the so-called "Patriot Act" and others with singularly Fascistic-homey and simplistic titles trotted out by a former barely-literate president and his bent administration, the "Seeming facts" are disguised in officialese and legal obfuscation.
So yep, the streets must revolt and none too prettily; General Strike and the whole raft of civil disobedience bolstered by what high-tech is available to us, if our shit-scared neighbors can drag themselves away from the blinking, big-screen opiates portrayed as reality.
By the way, look up the terms "Reiver" and "Hot Trod" from my Scot's/English Border ancestors. We are now entering the "Hot-trod" phase if we are to survive at all and it should NOT be pretty!

Right on Mr. Olbermann. Will you be the ONE that serves the cause of the average citizen? We the people need a leader & a direction. You lead Mr. Olbermann & I will follow.

Unless you shut out politics you'll never know what's happening.

It is my belief that if it were pointed out at every opportunity that the Reagan and Bush II tax breaks, to the wealthy, went onto the national debt (which raised the taxes of the working class through the increased interest rates paid on the national debt; over $400 billion a year now) It should also be pointed out that trickle down economics was not a new thing. The scam had an earlier trial, and failed, it was in fact in practice by republicans in the 20’s right up to the 1929 crash. After four years of mud pies the working voters took the republicans out of play by giving democrats both houses of congress and FDR the Oval Office in 1933. After a hell of a lot of unnecessary suffering, by working people, they had a little better life until Reagan, who could and would read anything placed in front of him as his own, gave rebirth to a policy that had already crashed the nation once; six years later the S&L crash, and twenty eight years later the policy once again deep-sixed the nation.

There is no reason to try to protect the democrat leaders they have long been showing who they represent. The only thing that the democrat leaders have done is throw Medicare and SS up for the republican picking. Simply put the blue house needs new furniture.

Organize. Call out. Open a large gymnasium(s) for the meeting of the first to rise. Bring them together from the town, the city, and divide the space into neighborhoods, subneighborhood s with flags naming them. Each group forms a caucus that meets daily to weekly to devise actions, street actions, general strikes, boycotts, a general run on a big bank. Report to the whole weekly. Go.

Social Media should instead be an instrument for getting us all together to take this country back. If Egypt could do it - let's take a page from their playbook and find a central place to gather and organize a demonstration.

The Washington Monument? The Capitol? WALL STREET????

What was the Network phrase? I'm MAD AS HELL AND I WON'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Perhaps we need to organize a MAD AS HELL day - boycot products and services - sit ins, demostrations.

Starting can be as simple as getting like minded neighbors together for a small meeting and you grow from there.
We'll do some...communit y organizing!

Nothing is going to happen. We have been divided and conquered. They won't be satisfied until we are all living like mainland Chinese slave labor.

Fox news and the AM radio pundits have so brainwashed enough of our neighbors that the few of us who still can think, will get squashed like bugs if we try anything.

Our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves over the end of Democracy.

+2 # Lulie 2011-08-03 11:20
jon: I REALLY understand your pessimism and frustration. The forces against us have all the money, all the media, all the power. But don't you reach a point when you'd rather risk "getting squashed like a bug" than do nothing? The things we DO have are our bodies, our voices, our dollars, and our votes. In great enough numbers, those cannot be ignored. I'm in my 60s, and I have NEVER seen a political climate like this one. The current tension and anger cannot go on, getting worse. Something's got to improve, or something's gonna BLOW.
Let's talk immediately do-able solutions. Corporate boycotts? demonstrations? surprise sit-ins? billboards? I'm not really a strategist, but I know people who are, and I bet you do too. Hell, go stand in front of your local Bank of America with a sign questioning why they don't pay their share of taxes while you're losing Medicare. Or do the same in front of some rich guy's house. Invite the local paper. Write-in Bernie Sanders's name for president next year.
All revolutions started somewhere. Maybe with angry people talking around someone's kitchen table. Maybe fed-up people blogging on this RSN site.
We need to stop wringing our hands and instead turn them into fists.

LET US NOT BE PESSIMISTIC. GO FORWARD AND DO GREAT THINGS----even just a small meeting and rally can have ripple effects. BELIEVE.

GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK KEITH; I CANNOT SAY IT ENOUGH!!:):):) You certainly hit a GRAND SLAM out of the ballpark! What is it going to take for the masses to WAKE UP and TAKE ACTION? I am still expecting the "Murdoch Mess" to hit the shores of the U.S. in FULL FORCE with such intensity, it will WIPE OUT Newscorp, Faux Nooz, & all related to it, and WAKE UP GENERATIONS of RIP VAN WINKLE VOTERS from their 31-YEAR NAP! 'Nuff said.

"The real heroes and heroines are those who uphold the principles that justice for everybody harms nobody.

They will FIGHT in defense of weak children and feeble old folks. They will FIGHT for the upliftment of humanity toward God. They will FIGHT to uphold the AMERICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT in which the people have a voice in the management of their own affairs. They will FIGHT for the freedom of religion, freedom of race friendship, freedom of industry and freedom of labor.

The final power must be put in the hands of those who will govern them with justice for everybody that harms nobody.

COWARDS should not be allowed to govern the people. They will not fight for right against wrong. They take orders from those in power for fear that they may not share in the loot.

GREED breeds theft, falsity, hate, famine, disease, weakness, cowardice and degeneracy.

A COWARD is a slippery poltroon who cows the weak and is cowed by the strong.

A HERO is one who will espouse and defend, at the cost of his life, that which is morally right against that which is morally wrong.

Morality breeds unselfishness, high principles, kindliness, self-sacrifice and free service to God and humanity."

ABSOLUTELY! Keith, thanks for speaking up, the majority of the rest of the media is shockingly quiet on this. The problem is the redistribution of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy. I am trying to get the word out as much as possible... we have a little weekly rag that is distributed locally and we are paying for it out of pocket. In the meantime all we can do it keep screaming it out at the top of our lungs: WE NEED TO TAX THE RICH! It seems the Dumocrats are just as whorish as the Rethuglicans. It will only get worse before it gets better. I believe this may signal the end of empire.

Sounds great Keith but where are the specifics? And who be these warriors . . ? The Democrats? It is over the moon staggering the number of people in this country who still believe, or want to believe, that the Democrats are a party of the people, by the peo -- blah blah blah. They're all, and let's make sure we include guys like Franken, Sanders, et al . . . closet Republicans, they've all been co-opted. Looking to them for leadership is a fool's errand. Until Progressives can do something, anything! besides wring their hands they will continue their sad, pathetic decline into meaninglessness . But perhaps the Corporate State(which they helped create by the way)may throw them a bone in the way of including hand-wringing in the summer Olympics. American liberals would gold medal every time and the corporate media could further patronise them by featuring them in some glossy, tear-inducing segment of their coverage of the games . . . USA!! USA!! USA!!

0 # William Bjornson 2011-08-03 22:29
Keith is wrong in one very important way. He is pointing us in the wrong direction. He is pointing us at the cape rather than the hand behind it. The government is a machine that runs according to the strings pulled. "Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes its laws." -Rothchild (Redshield) the First. It is these upon whom we must press our case. Their other machines, the corporations, that render us economic slaves must be neutered if not wholly outlawed as diseased societal mechanisms. We must take back control of our own money and give swift Chinese justice to those who would swindle us and steal our futures. And, most importantly, we must remind them of the OTHER voting machine, the guillotine. It has tasted of the elite and it is always hungry... The government exists, really, to control us for the benefit of the elite which is all that counts when you use the term "benefits society". Our elite is quickly becoming a parasite we don't need, we can grow a new one. Much opportunity for the up and coming sociopath with a whole new elite niche to fill. They'll be 'polite' for a long time, our nouveau elite. Really, that's what the government's for, to take the punches for the elite. We need to go around the intermediary and deal direct.

William - your extreme solutions are not helpful, merely incendiary. We need reasoned change to happen, not revolution by mobs in the street. OK, mobs in the street would help, but not of the violence that you apparently yearn for.
