Intro: "Are you there, Rick? It's me, in Heaven. I appreciate everything you've done for the good people of Texas these past 10 years, but I'm thinking it may be time for you to take it to the next level. I know. I know. You have no desire to be president, and I share your distaste for Beltway living. Still, I want you to seriously consider running."

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

Is god hedging his bets? First Bachmann, now Perry...I heard he tried to call Palin but got her voice-mail.
+14 # klondikekitty 2011-07-22 23:31
ha, i love it!! thanks for the shot of reality during this debaucle known as the American presidential campaign!

Scott--as you probably know the only one we know for certain that god has wagered with (according to the Book of Job) is the devil. Fitting, ain't it? Wonder if god will trot out Behemoth this time--or is Behemoth Perry in disquise? Bad disquise.
+27 # billy bob 2011-07-22 22:00
Doesn't rick perry just remind you of every stereotype you've ever heard of for the antichrist?

He's like the star of another sequel to the Omen. He even wears a lot of black.
+15 # Pickwicky 2011-07-23 10:10
Billy--if Ricky doesn't get elected, do you think he'll threaten to secede from Heaven? Do you think god would care?
+16 # Archie1954 2011-07-22 22:07
This gross hypocrite will never be president. Even the brain dead American public are not that stupid!

Archie: I appreciate your optimistic hope for some kind of basic national intelligence, but I've learned in my many decades of political observation that one should never underestimate the stupidity of the US electorate.

Quoting Ken Hall:
Archie: I appreciate your optimistic hope for some kind of basic national intelligence, but I've learned in my many decades of political observation that one should never underestimate the stupidity of the US electorate.

And deliberately kept in that state by cuts in education every time the "budget" got out of hand.
I have watched this process from post WWII; THEY have been eminently successful in their bringing us to this point in our history.
They invented the TEABAGPARTY to hurry the process of fall of empire.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses
+6 # in deo veritas 2011-07-23 08:01
Don't take that for granted! Stupidity has no limits. Even tho the chimp held office and wasn't really elected there were plenty of dimwits who voted for him. How about the same fools who put the teabaggers in Congress in 2010? Nuff said.

Don't count on it!
Ignorance is curable
Stupidity is not.

With so many wannabe GOP candidates being Called (presumably by God) to run for the Republican presidential nomination, one has to conclude that either God has a particularly mean sense of humor -- or -- each member of the Trinity is endorsing candidates independently -- or -- this pack of would-be Leaders-of-the- Free-World is richly endowed with individuals who are either bat-shit crazy or charlatans or a touch of both.

When I speak to God, it's called praying. When God speaks to me it's called schizophrenia.
+9 # Pickwicky 2011-07-23 10:05
Maddave--There' s another option to consider: Let's delve into the mind of this god that calls so many to the same post--and may I point out your correct classification of these "individuals [as] either bat-shit crazy or charlatans" (beautifully put)! What could their god be up to? They can't all be president, but they all could fail to be president. Hello--that's the answer: it's god's plan to shoot these goofies down with one celestial bullseye--trail ing clouds of gory!

Rick Perry is another one of the "good ol' boys" from Texas who believes that his abiding faith in the God of his understanding will win over the conservative voters, although i am reasonably certain he also hopes that those voters won't bother to check out the legislation he has signed into Texas law that slowly wittles away the rights of Americans, specifically women . . . Although his "i'm just an ordinary, average American who looks to God for answers in my life" attitude may help him connect with the ultra-conservat ive religious fundamentalist voters, most of the rest of us are alternately appalled and disgusted by his chauvinistic attitudes and manipulative, controlling behavior . . . i am very skeptical as to his claim that God is directing him to run for President, but if He is, it could be that God is using the opportunity to provide Perry with a lesson in humility when he is roundly defeated by anyone who has a more realistic grip on the pulse of today's American society . .

When people say God is talking to them, the usual response is to put them on antipsychotics and hospitalize them if they become violent. Unless they are prominent Republicans, apparently, in which case they run for President.

Truly, the inmates are in charge of the asylum.
+8 # Progressive Patriot 2011-07-23 01:28
They might all be running at "God's" behest, but I think he's just messin' with them ... 'cause none of them are worthy of the job. But then, sometimes I wonder about Obama, too.

I question that it's really God talking to Michelle Bachmann, or just her husband. She says God told her, through her husband, to go to post-grad law school to study Tax Law, and to run for the Congress.

I'm waiting for a _real_ Progressive to step up and challenge Obama.
+22 # JohnnyK 2011-07-23 02:27
That's all we need is another Texas cowboy. No thanks
+8 # Foxtrottango 2011-07-23 12:39
A Texas Cowboy is what Mexicans call a "cow-gada." Rick Perry is no different.

But perhaps cow-gada Perry is trying to hide something being that he cannot hide his ignorance, arrogance, hypocrisy and bigotry!

Yeah, like the typical angry white male in Texas.

By the way, God doesn't wear Texas cowboy boots. He wear sandals and a beard and he certainly doesn't smell like a Texas cowgada!

Folks, just before I move to some cililized place like Outer Slbovia or Smalia -- or maybe commit suicide, I will tell you, "I told you so." Rick Perry will, in all probability, be your next president. Yes, Archie1954, the American public is THAT stupid. Example? How about Boehner & Mitch-baby. The the gov of Wisconsing and Ohio and Kansas and Oklahoma. All anti-people fanatics. Yes, the American public can be that stupid.
+13 # J.Lindsley 2011-07-23 05:44
I would suggest to Governor Perry that if the calling from God is real, he should become a televangelist. It is far more profitable venture for power {to say nothing of Glory!} and end up with 30,000 seat Arena filled with those who need saving. Now that is power!

The nation best recall the rise of another right-wing nut job in Germany when considering the current batch of candidates and potential candidates.
+9 # in deo veritas 2011-07-23 08:08
If the people in this country are stupid enough to allow the corporate fascist takeover to continue then we richly deserve the terrible fate that befell Germany and Japan in 1945. Only difference is that there will be no one like the USA to come in and rebuild us-just the jackals to pick up the pieces. The true creator of the universe will not let our misdeeds (many times in His name) go unpunished. Time is running out.
+11 # in deo veritas 2011-07-23 08:15
We have seen lots of people who have voices in their head and it's not God that's on the line. What about the guy who shot Lennon? The Son of Sam, etc.? More of the same. Do you really want your life to be directed by them? God gave you a mind and a soul and free will. What you do with em is up to you and you are held accountable. You can't say "the devil made me do it" or"I was just following orders" and get away with it.
+5 # Foxtrottango 2011-07-23 13:23
The only problem is, the Germans learned from their mistakes (up to now) while those sick sorry greedy dogma white fundamentalists in the USA, and more so in Texas, didn't learn a damn thing!

It's history repeating itself.

Must we need another World War to prove them wrong again? With half of the nation being brainwashed by the likes of Michelle and Ricky boy, it does seem that way, doesn't it?
+11 # in deo veritas 2011-07-23 07:58
One destructive nutcase from Tex-ass was enough! This man is another of the breed that prey on the feeble-minded. Those who use "religion" for political purposes have a reserved section in hell just awaiting them. The present crop of loonies like this guy, Bachmann, Bush, etc. may just get trampled in the stampede. Texas-lead the way to secession and good riddance!

The late, great Molly Ivins once called the Tejas legislature "The university of bad government" and how often has this been proven, culminating the most recently SELECTED pres, whom I despise so totally I can't even stand to speak his name (Apologies to and excepting the late Ann Richardson of course)!
It looks like several other states are vying for a similar title but at least there are credible and fairly visible opposition Democrats in Minnesota, Wisconsin and even Florida, where the outspoken and courageous Alan Grayson ("The Republicans want you to die") has again been persuaded to run, and a few others.
Maybe the God-botherers sense that, as no carbon-based American humanist with a tithe of active brain cells left would ever nominate or vote for them, they'd better call on the "presumption of divine guidance" (my term) for encouragement, lock-step "yess-sah/ma'm" obedience and superficially instant appeal to the chowder-and-dit to-heads who swallow this stuff as a a palliative to reason. -Or they are trying for their own place as examples of stunted evolution in Kentucky's Creationist Museum (heh-heh)!

Pity the poor true believers who must choose among this gang of 'chosen ones.'
Think of the confusion amongst the faithful--it's almost as bad as trying to make ethical sense of the Old Testament. Really, my heart goes out to them; however, I'll hold on to my cash.

Sp many who have heard the call are psychopaths, foolish people believe these idiots are any better than out! Indeed they are not.

Any Woman who would allow people to tell them what to do with their Lives, Minds or Bodies in 2011 may as well move to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other Chauvinistic Countries. We need Helen Reddy or another Woman to help up see the Light. It is obviously not Rpub Oprie, buy people then they will love you. Sad, glad to see TV is free of her on Prime Stations.

Got to start working towards 2012. Lot of good minds here, do not let them dissove once you leave the computer, start organizing. Lots of Organizations are looking for groups in America to start meeting, learn how, listen to each other and move on Peacefully. Organize, make others Aware they still can.

I, for one, don't care WHAT the "Weaker of the Mouse" wants. It's what the American People want that matters.
0 # Pickwicky 2011-07-26 11:04
MainSreet--may I add to your last sentence? "It's what the [intelligent] American People want that matters." There, isn't that better?
+7 # lark3650 2011-07-23 23:18
What was it that George Bush tried to say but never did get it right???? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me! Well, if the American people buy into people like Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, and Rick Perry claiming they are getting orders from God....either God has a weird sense of humor or he has decided to lower the bar! Who do these people think they are????
+2 # Barbara K 2011-07-24 13:07
These morons are hearing voices all right, but it's the voices of the devils they serve that they are really listening to.
0 # Pickwicky 2011-07-26 11:01
Barbara--to those of us who don't believe in gods or demons, may I suggest that the "morons" you speak of are listening to their personal voices? But come to think of it, their own voices may certainly be demonic.
+2 # Cliff 2011-07-24 20:18
As someone from Austin who knows. Perry is a complete idiot who only cares for his own.
+2 # MylesJ 2011-07-25 11:17
I think you have the wrong god talking with Perry at the top of this article. I read thsi blurb and it sounds more like the real God talking.
God: "From what I can see, you spent your entire life stealing from the poor to give to the rich."
Rick: "But those are just blacks and illegal immigrants, Lord! They're just welfare-sucking burdens on society! They're not really people!"
