Warren writes: "I ran for office because I believe the playing field is rigged. Evidence of that is everywhere. Now I've been in the Senate for nearly a year and believe as strongly as ever that the system is rigged for powerful interests and against working families."

The system is rigged, but don't worry, the government will take care of you. The 'system' has always been rigged. The big trick is to sell the worker bees that they are for you, while actually instituting policies that enslave you. Poster Child: The QE's sold to the American people as save jobs; real objective: keep up or increase the value of assets, mainly held by the wealthy. Proof, look at the stock market versus wage increases. Enough said; and who did this Democrats and Republicans. Bush at least gave it to taxpayers, while Obama has give it all to the bankers.

Quoting MidwesTom:
...Bush at least gave it to taxpayers, while Obama has give it all to the bankers...

He "gave" us a $600 prepayment on temporary tax cuts. That did provide a little stimulus for some, but we had to pay it back the next year. We would often get a return of $1, were joking that my wife was $1 off, getting $2 back. The $598 dollars we had to "pay back," on the zero interest loan we never wanted, was the tipping point for her (I had many after Enron).

Bush also "gave" us Enron (regulation suppression) after Jim Brulte's California energy deregulation bill started taking down our $15 billion surplus, eventually costing just California something like $45 billion in losses that could have been reduced with earlier action. Bush also pushed for even more "affordable homes" loans, and saw private lenders blow up the housing market with even worse sub-prime loans (after Franklin Raines was replaced by Daniel Mudd at Fannie), as "temporary" tax cuts extended a decade beyond any good they had done in the beginning.

To me, Clinton started the slide, Cheney/Bush accelerated it and threw away the brake systems, then Obama put a band aid on problems while still allowing at least $16 trillion (by 2010)to be transferred to the least really productive parts of our society, the part that collects massive profits, captures our public investments, and delivers some of the worst junk services (for all but a few percent)in the history of our financial sector.

Fer Chrissake, you must live in some cave in the Midwest!
Dimwits it was that made it HARDER for beleaguered people to declare bankruptcy, many of those the victims of the con games Warren addresses here.
Due to changes by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, it became easier to get student loan discharges after July 1, 2010 -Obama passed THAT!
It's easy, shallow and lazy to blame Ob' (by no means perfect nor even progressive) for the sins visited on the nation and the world by his predecessors but that's just the kind of hashish blown out by the US owner-media to be sucked in eagerly by anybody with an ax to grind.
The obscene funds blown around by the NRA are living testimony to this fact, exacerbated by Citizens united.
And guess who put Roberts and Ailito on the SCOTUS? -A wee clue, it begins with "B" -or as I name him "D", not "O"!
That OK with you?

The Playing Field is rigged. It probably always has been.
But I think that the last 30, Post Reagan Years and the ensuing scam I call 'Smaller Government' (Less Government of We the People through relentless, snowballing Deregulation, De-Taxation and Privatization of Government Schemes on behalf of BigBiz-Corporat e Interests) has so rigged the playing field that the very fundamental nature of America has been transformed and its continuation is destroying us.
Republicans are very good with simple minded Talkingpoints. So good that since the Gingrich Revolution, Liberals have been 'poofed' like magic right out of Washington and the National Discourse because of it.
I am hoping someone like Warren can be much more clever, REAL and Educational.
Law, Regulation, Taxation and Tax Structure are MAJOR sources of what empowers We the People to be WE the People in Our Government Equation.
The Corpo-Lobby has Deregulated US out of power.
De-Taxation of BigBiz has starved our power.
Privatization Schemes have turned Tax Payers into Corporate Cash Cows.
The entire Smaller Government SCAM has not reduced the size of Government. Government is bigger and more expensive than ever and now functions on behalf of a few Super Wealthy People and Entities.
Its all been about destroying the NEW DEAL and shifting the flow of power and wealth to the control of a few. Even the POWER of Media is now owned and used as they please by a few because of it.

Quoting m...:
...since the Gingrich Revolution...

The "Gingrich revolution" is epitomized for me by his 1996 GoPac memo, "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control."

I believe it is modeled on a Cato Institute paper that suggested using "Leninist" propaganda techniques (at least the parts about always criticizing your opponents efforts and glorifying your side's, even if they were exactly the same, and always sabotaging your opponent's efforts as much as possible).

The public parts of both Gingrich's and Lenin's campaigns didn't include criminal sabotage, just non cooperation and legal interference (which I believe Lenin also tried to hide a little less completely from the public). We view Lenin's apparent secret machinations as including much more real physical sabotage, intimidation, and even assassinations on a larger scale. Gingrich's campaigns seem very much less violent/non-vio lent but possibly more tolerated and effective through a growingly more secretive ALEC and many other temporary or longer term sham "grassroots" organizations and think tanks.

Gingrich's "Revolution" may be effective over a few decades, but I suspect the eventual blow back/"counter-s emi revolution" may come sooner than it did for Lenin's revolution/coun ter-revolution, and hopefully as relatively non-violent as our recent revolutions (like Gingrich's) have been compared to Russian, and other revolutions/cou nter-revolution s.

The sheer greed of the Wealthy of this Country, I believe, is unprecedented over the last forty years. Thanks to the Reagan Administration and subsequent "ME Firsters" in our Government, it's not likely to change unless WE the People rise up and MAKE them change! Senators like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Al Franken and the few other like minded Politicians who came to Washington to make it better for ALL of us not just the rich, are s l o w l y making progress on actually HELPING the poor working stiff. The 1% best wake up and REALIZE that it is in their OWN best interest to HELP make our economy profitable as well as equitable for ALL of us or they WILL go the way of the Dodo. Sadly, I'm beginning to believe they are all too self-centered and ignorant of History to help themselves, let alone, the rest of us.

A large part of the problem is our crazy monetary system. MidwesTom mentions QEs where the Fed has bought up worthless paper from banks. But everyday the US Treasury sells money to banks, they charge 9.7 cents for a $100 bill. Wouldn't you like to buy some?

We at Move to Amend like to say, the system isn't broken; it's fixed. If we're going to take the government away from the corporate elite, we need a movement to amend the Constitution to end the doctrine that money spent on electioneering communications is protected by the 1st Amendment.

I won't lift a finger for Hillary Clinton. We need to draft Warren to run for president in 2016.

Elections talk about rigged, Look at the the Clinton scams that they pulled off last time they held absolute power. They are getting ready to rule and loot some more as are the Bush crime family. The press cannot even report on out current maximum leaders Harvard grades much less the real truth ask Michael Hastings.

One article this week purports that Hillary Clinton is in a formidable position to be the next president. People who encouraged President Obama to run (Nancy Pelosi, Claire McCaskill, Harry Reid) are now pleading for Hillary to run. Even Senator Warren has endorsed Hillary. The same Senator Warren who in this article claims the system is rigged. Connecting dots truly could not be any easier. All of them are actors playing their part in the great betrayal of the American people. A Hillary Clinton president would be the death knell of the American people who are already on life support with the Congress gleefully standing on the oxygen tube.

Controls on and oversight of Wall Street? We don't need no meddling by stinkin' government! Our very freedom relies on our right and opportunity to cut our own throats and stick it to the unaware. Are there people who really believe this absurdity? You betcha! Yes, both major political parties have such purveyors in their ranks. In addition to a corrupted Republican Party, remember that it was Bill Clinton who signed off on the killing of Glass-Steagell. President Obama also has shown by many of his appointments that he's also in bed with Wall Street.

The likes of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown are true champions for meaningful and effective reform, but many of the electorate keep making the same gullibility mistakes when they go to the polls.

We know what reforms are needed to heal our nations. It remains to be seen whether we have the will to bring about the necessary reforms.

+10 # Helen 2013-11-10 11:04
It seems to me that some of these reforms are so obvious, and would be so simple, that an informed electorate could toss out any member of Congress who did not support them. For example, how about a federal tax on the purchase or sale of stocks and bonds? Hardworking Americans pay income tax on their earnings, property tax on their homes, and sales tax on the shoes their kids need. Why is there no sales tax on the purchase of stocks and bonds? Think about it. Would your Senator or Representative would support this?

Perhaps Eliz' W' might address the obscenely corrupt, inefficient and near impossible to deal with Credit Bureau system, 3 major "Bureaus"; private companies using the title to make it appear that they are government based, who have the power singly and in concert, to make or unmake anyone or any business with no regard for circumstances.
They are error-ridden, guilty of con games and have spawned a whole group of piggy-back con- companies on their already blurry identities and status, to cheat people into paying for "Credit rating Updates", so cowed is the average US consumer into treating every foible from these three behemoths who unforgivingly service the entire credit industry in this country, as holy writ!
And guess who benefits? -The big banksters of course, who finance them and lobby on their behalf to make sure that the consumer is punished in as many and as profitable ways as they can turn the screws on them. Then woe-betide you if you are railroaded into bankruptcy or choose to get divorced; end of hope for 7-10 years and any chance of a fair crack at a loan by any but the payday loan crowd (thankfully illegal in Oregon and a few other states).
And guess what the major causes of bankruptcy are in the Fragmented States? Medical debt and divorce, both part of the great narrow canyon of private-industr y conditional strictures to force conformity on all.
This is ONE industry that should be broken up and government-admi nistered regionally.
Talk about rigged!

"Earlier this year, for example, we had a major national debate on gun violence. If as many people
were dying of a mysterious disease as innocent bystanders are dying from firearms, a cure would
be our top priority and we’d still be talking about it. Gun violence is an epidemic, an epidemic
that kills our children, our friends, our neighbors. But we don’t even have good data on gun
violence. Why? Because the NRA and the gun industry lobby made it their goal" I can assure the closer Texas comes to succession or the Coming Socialist/OWS revolution comes to wiping out the current Politicians of all parties and the Upperclass and banksters, the nearer gun in citizens hands will become the main Government target. They well know if ot comes to Army & Police having to kill their relatives & Friends it is the exceptionalists they turn against and en masse join the Revolution in American Spring.

There is nothing Democratic about USA and electoral 2 party system so rigged and gerrymandered etc that causes 100mn of the 150mn who should vote to not vote and lets 33% choose who rules and 66% to be represented by their least favored. "Or take our system of elections – the very heart of democracy. When the Supreme Court decided
in Citizens United that it would let corporations spend as much money as they pleased on
elections, they unleashed a powerful group of millionaires and billionaires who could spend
hundreds of millions of dollars to influence outcomes—all in secret." Screw both. Look at Australian Compulsory Voting and Preferential choices and proportional State Senate equal delegations the bettr for you. But Arrogant Yankees won't consider any electoral system, or arbitration specialist labor judging in lieu of Collective Bargaining. No 25 year younger Baby Brother Australia you won't hear has a more cleverer system. However to Dirty trick World Trade a TPP or TAP pure corporate cunts committee of arbitration in trade to over-ride any country's own laws OK.

"And then there’s the consumer agency. The CFPB was designed from the very beginning to cut
out tricks and traps in consumer finance and add transparency to the marketplace. We fought for
that agency together! And we won!

The agency is about making consumer credit clear—no more..." Ha ha now it's give them loans because they have no wages to buy what the machones that took thir jobs, now produces, give them loans they can't repay and at extortion 28% Bankcard charges then foreclose sell their houses give that cash back to the rich to buy their depressed price forfeiture glut house supply to rent to the same suckers now in deeper debt traps. Oh Yes the Yankee 80% morson peasantry have plenty to learn before they hit the OWS or Socialist un-industrial de-mechanizatio n revolution of 2029-50. Elizabeth Warren is one of the few people in Washington that makes sense to me. I think she gets it. I hope many will see it too, and that her message will become mainstream. I would vote for her as the next President. Harsh criticism will come from the groups playing the games that she so clearly reveals. Folks should consider the sources. 'Rigged' is right, and it is WRONG!

Now is time that Hillary Clinton must be undermined as a Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2016. Other candidates who are qualified and who are attractive to voters must be brought forward, and the record of the imperialist, Empress Hillary, be made widely known. Elizabeth Warren would make a fine candidate to lead the nation in January, 2017. She is far more qualified and experienced in the federal government than was Barack Obama in 2005. Her qualifications include integrity, as was sadly untrue of Obama.
