Part of that Super PAC money will go to congressional elections which are also critical. Probably, with Mitt's numbers worsening, it is more likely that money will be diverted to those congressional races.

I certainly hope that the Scrooge/Marley ticket has reverberations down the ballot. I think the Republican Party needs to be rebuked in a big way before they understand how nuts they are behaving. It's up to the voters to do that.

+14 # kurt.cagle@gmail.com 2012-09-26 18:38
Possibly, but keep in mind that the window of opportunity for switching ad buys is also closing fast. By October 1, there may not be enough time to actually produce, buy air time for and air the ads for congressional races for those ads to make much difference.

+6 # HowardMH 2012-09-27 09:31
Don't count Scrooge/Marley out yet. The super rich still have many millions to spend on campaign ads for Mittens, and the millions if idiots and morons in the US that listen to the propaganda there is still plenty of time to be brain washed. Ops, I said “Brain”. Doesn’t a brain have to have more than two brain cells to actually be called a brain.

+10 # Texas Aggie 2012-09-27 11:16
To echo a rebuke that was made on another site (Pegasus?), please, do not refer to Romney as "Mittens." Mittens are warm, fuzzy things that keep you warm when it is very cold outside. Romney isn't any of those things, and to continue to call him "Mittens" is to disparage an item of clothing that is quite useful even lifesaving, in the North.

You say that, but the article explains that they're having trouble in Michigan and Pennsylvania. The MSM isn't explaining why that is. It should be national news, and the subject of a 60 minutes expose.

In Michigan, the public is being traumatized by the Governor appointing Czars to run financially distressed Counties and Cities. The Czars are just eliminating elected officials and regulatory bodies and by caveat, installing guys who are closing and privatizing the traditional and essential services.

In Pennsylvania, the fracking industry is running roughshod over the landscape and the citizens are finding themselves double crossed, impotent, and irate. Corporate livestock farms are another severe bone of contention there, and downwind and downstream residents are irate that their longstanding democratic remedies won't work anymore.

So voters in those states are getting a preview of what Romney and his sidekick have in store for the rest of us. NO AD will get them to vote for the duo that wants to install a destructive bunch such as the Rethuglicans represent. People who have for four years been demonizing Barack Obama have decided he's "good enough", but the MSM remains mum.

The country is not for sale, but apparently the principles are!

As a progressive liberal, how can you vote for a man who has a kill list on
his desk and has signed indefinite detention?

Where is Montesquieu (google) and his
separation of legislative, judging and
executive power?

Vote Green/alternati ve/third party and be proud of looking your grandchildren in the eyes.

In regard to China. Rachel Maddow reported about a Chinese oil company, Which TRIED to buy a minor California oil company, to no avail.
The Chinese company is doing business with IRAN, IN SPITE OF THE EMBARGO????

Now WHO do you think was investing in THAT company???? RIGHT MR. ANGRY WITH CHINA HIMSELF. He invested twice. But pulled out his money when he started to run for the presidency. He is ALL class. As usual he lies. WE PLAIN AND SIMPLY CAN NOT TRUST MIT ROMNEY.

A little fable: A multi-ton prehistoric mastodon is caught at the edge of a bottomless tar pit. The more it struggles hysterically to free itself, the more it slowly sinks into oblivion. Suddenly, a baby mastodon appears, and seeing it's "daddy" in distress, tries gamely to latch onto his massive trunk with its own little appendage and pull him to safety. The sinking mastodon is Mitt; the baby is the Wednesday televised debate. Moral of the story: Good luck with that.

I, too, have been consoled by the enormous sums being poured into Romney adversiting... until I remembered who owns the media. And realized that this was a sort of perpetual cycle, with those dollars going right back into the pockets they came out of.

What I REALLY hate is how effective lies are, how readily the general public seems to swallow the hook without examination, and how the media, for the most part, turn a blind eye. Then I remember who owns the media, and ... well, see above.

Absolutely dumbest thing is to continue noise about the Mitt losing, and fire up GOP base.

At the same time, lazy Dem voters (like 2010) don't bother to vote. Certainly, the next four years will be extraordinary, and not in a good way.

The Middle East will prove to be a battle arena like no other since WWII, even without Iran on page one, because the Muslims aim to settle old scores among themselves! Jordan and the house of Saud, two long held monarchies are soon to fall prey to Islamic fundamentalism. This is IN PROGRESS, as Inspector 71 would say as he finishes his hot dog...

The next administration must deal with a motor fuel crisis owing to oilfield sabotage. Militants will finally hit Saudi fields to cut off royal bribe money, and so ends the rule of the House of Saud. NATO treaties demand US share oil supply, meaning homeland gas/diesel rationing and say goodbye to happy motoring. Decades of RR mergers/consoli dations and ripping up branch lines will haunt distribution in many US smaller communities & some metropolitan areas. This is completely off the screen!

This election will be the last "Normal" election, as messed up as it seems now. Water for agriculture must be enhanced, so it is suggested the "smart money" take a look at NAWAPA, along with cherry-picking the most critical (agricultural, essential manufacturing traffic) rail branch lines for rehab.

tahoevalleylines.

You mention several issues the majority of our country men are not paying attention to at all. Mitt and they STILL think that we can "tell" countries in the Middle East and elsewhere what to do!!

As I have said before, those days are LONG GONE. I agree with you that sabotage to the Saudi OIL Fields is very likely.

That is just ONE MORE reason we should step up our work on renewable- and clean energy.
We may need it much sooner than we think.

It is time to WAKE UP to reality. We are NOT THE SUPERPOWER. anymore, for many countries are asserting themselves, and they DO NOT WANT ANYBODY TO TELL THEM ANYTHING.

Bush's misadventure in Iraq CLEARLY showed the Middle East, that we are NOT all powerful. There are limits to our military might. And they want NONE of it.

We have propped up too many dictators for them to respect us. Now we need to stand back and let them work out their own problems.
Like a friend we need to stand back and only give advise when asked.

+5 # soularddave 2012-09-26 19:38
We destroyed Iraq because S.H. DARED to trade on Euros instead of US dollars. Do you think China will buy oil in US dollars for long? Russia?

Don't look now, but we're creeping up on something that's bigger than us. Could the US be forced to fight for MidEast oil again? could we, maybe, just get cut off or have to buy in a currency other than Dollars?

BTW, the US has committed to provide weapons to The Sauds and provide protection in return for the continued supply of oil. Do we want that fight?

Oh, my. the thot plickens as one looks down the road a bit further.

soularddave.

We are in for a rocky future, and we sure need a cool head in the White House, for there will be plenty of chicken hawks in Congress, who will push for war.

Since our interests run counter to China's in many respects, getting into a war, as I see it, is not possible, for they can pull the plug, call in their markers. We owe them more money than god has.

And if you think we have problems now???
You ain't seen nottin yet??
I can't see how we could avoid going broke. if we get into another war.

And of course that includes being tricked into picking up the pieces, if Netanyaho is stupid and pig headed enough to bomb Iran's nuclear sites.

They will simply not be able to get them all for there are MANY more than most people realize. So the Israelis would only do a halfassed job which would create a king size MESS and maybe start the 3rd world war.

With allies like Netanyahu, we don't need enemies. This is not antisemetic. it is anti Netanyahu. He is a dangerous war monger.

As a Democrat, I thank God for Romney -- who else (other than Perry and the rest of the GOP Prez hopefuls) could have messed up so many times that the only way he can win is to cheat... Read Greg Palast's "Billionaires and Ballot Bandits" if you have any doubt that this is still possible. The Koch brothers have spent billions, pulled strings, stacked the deck, caged voters, bought congress-people , funded the Heritage Foundation, drafed and changed laws just to move their "I want my fair share-- and that's all of it" agenda forward. So everyone who wants to continue as a species on planet Earth better fight to make sure their votes are counted to elect people who are not Koch pawns and worse.

If there's anything we have to be concerned about it's the voting machines. Diebold pulled a few fast ones during the last election, so we'd better hope they pull a lot more fast ones this time-- especially in the swing states.

I have had a haunting suspicion from the onset that the Rethugs did not care who they ran -could have been Micky and Pluto- because they own the voting machines and will swing the election (the congress is MORE IMPORTANT than the pres--please contribute as much as you can)..Hand marked Paper ballots and 2year impounding are essential if an honest, repeatable count is to be obtained. BTW abolishing the Electorial College would be a good idea too.

+12 # bmiluski 2012-09-27 07:17
I am with you. If we didn't have the electoral college, Gore would have been president. Which would have meant
1- No Iraq

3- A lot further in alternative fuel developement
4- No Katrina debacle.
5- No deficit
ETC

Rich is correct in the analysis that the super-pac money can't sell a pig-in-a-poke when the smells rising from the poke suggest, not bacon but skunk. But level off the field with a more socially digestable, articulate and moderately conservative candidate and the power of money will become obvious. If left untrimmed the big money will own the country and the USA will look like post-USSR Russia.

NO NO NO NO NO !!!!

This is EXACTLY what those f-kers want you to believe: That money doesn't count in elections.

BUT IT DOES. OVERWHELMINGLY.

It isn't going to matter much in the PRESIDENTIAL election because Robme is a disaster of Goldwater dimensions. But WATCH THE CONGRESSIONAL RACES where a $100K here and there can make a dramatic impact on the outcome. The Reich-wing can spout out so many lies that a Demo will not be able to keep up without lots of cash of his/her own.

If Obama stays in office and the GOP takes Congress, we'll have another 4 years of criminal conduct. Frankly, if SCOTUS didn't have at least one opening coming up, I'd vote 3rd party. Obama is statist capitalism in black face. But at least with a Demo Congress there might be SOME hope.

+25 # Smokey 2012-09-26 16:35
Organize, organize, organize.... Even if Obama wins - and it's still not certain - he won't do much good if he faces a conservative Congress and conservative leaders in state and local government.... Bill Clinton was reelected and he sat around for four years, trying to stay in office, dodging nasty accisations about his personal behavior, and ??????? As far as we know, Obama doesn't have any interns pulling at his pants and it's unlikely that he'll face impeachment proceedings. However, he may be a lame duck for four years... He'll only be effective if he gets pushed by progressive voters and a progressive Congress.

All I can say as a non-citizen taxpayer who can't vote, is that it's a damn shame that all that money -from both sides- is going to commercial TV and radio stations to peddle more crap that people don't need and put out more content-free infotainment, instead of funding stuff that the country really needs like universal health care and infrastructure.
In almost all other "civilized" nations, the amount of money and time spent on media is limited and monitored by statute so that all valid parties have pretty much equal time.
But here the most gilded and lubricated voices are the only ones heard, above reason, commonsense and motive in a flurry of smoke and mirrors.
No wonder you are all pissed off (Look at the recent congressional credibility ratings).
I'd love to see a poll on how people feel about the current supreme court who made this all possible.

I think that Mitt's support for an attack on Iran for Israel's sake, is killing him. Obama is gaining off of the anti-Israel sentiment in most of the country. The country does not want another war, and OBama has not bowed to Israel's demand, which Mitt would.

+4 # X Dane 2012-09-27 09:48
Tom.

I don't think it is as much anti Israeli sentiment, as it is anti Netanyaho sentiment.
He is such a war monger, that the military helped to remove him from office around 2000.

He INSISTS that he is protecting Israel, but if he finesses an attack on Iran, he will DESTROY his country, probably OURS TOO, and start an all out Middle East war, that may grow beyond anyone's ability to stop.

Obama DOES understand that, I wonder if Romney does, or if he cares, for the republicans wants war to keep the money rolling in to their supporters, the weapons manufactures.

Big Money flows freely into both major parties' coffers, and our political system still remains almost fatally corrupted by it.

Yes, it would be good to see Mittens and his more blatantly elitist party slapped down in Nov.
But then, any Obama II presidency damn well better get serious about leading campaign finance reform, or I and a lot of other progressives will never vote Democrat again.

+3 # MindDoc 2012-09-26 22:45
Hmm, so Mitt the Flip's latest exploit is to take on the notion that "beauty is only skin deep"? Off to a great start, isn't he? No desperation (or shame) here... I mean, "no apologies". He understood he needed to act less lilly-white, perhaps, and so made another judgment call on how to proceed.

Seriously, I do have a theory I don't see getting any voice, and that is that the lies, blatant & constant, along with the mud-slinging, deflecting of facts and positions, fear-mongering, voter fraud worries, etc. --- I think maybe it's the all-you-can-eat money and mudpie fest which has passed a tipping point and is now simply tuned out, and the uncommitted voter relies on crystallized positions, facts, or a steady diet of automatically filtered 'news' and tweets, etc., but is simply sick of the air wars on TV and the annoying calls at home. So I think (hope) there's something positive in all the money the 1% Party Owners are spending on brainwashing and spin and misinformation:

Quote:

Obama is up nearly ten points in Michigan and eight points in Pennsylvania even though right-wing super-PACS have spent $18 million on TV spots in those two states
.

What if, aside from the worst possible person on earth shooting himself in the foot continuously, the "main effect" of all the endless smearing and whining and polling & trolling is, it HURTS the R&R party, and brings out Obama votes. Hopeful.

If just seems as if all of these old, rich, white men do not understand the changing world. They always arrive a little late and out of breath. They do not know how to connect with the average person and do not know the world that we live in. Consequently, they look at ads and strategies and think they will work but in the end they are off the mark and fail. Just like their selection of Mitt Romney as a candidate. The plasticman steps out into a world that he does not know and tries to look natural and try to act like he is part of our world. But with every word and action he is exposed as not being one of us. The rich billionaires can spend and spend but they will never be able to sell a defective product.
