Rich writes: "The Republican War Against Women never went away - it hasn't gone away for a quarter century. But in presidential years, the party tries to stuff it in the closet..."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

You have to wonder about woman and minorities that join the Republican Party. But the Dems in some states do not embrace woman and minorities either as candidates unless they hand pick them - and that is usually based on the ability to control them.

Politics was a men's club. Even woman and minorities only relatively recently were allowed to vote. Let's face it - politics is still pretty much controlled by the ol' boys at the top of the Hill.

Yes, and this needs to be changed with the Women's Congressional Caucus and organizations like Emily's List. Women comprise more than 54% of the population and yet we have no substantive representation anywhere.

Akins is a symptom of one of the ailments of the Greedy Old Pigs. Many of them have the same ideas and that is their stupidity showing. Women have rights and many of the Rs cannot stand it. They are bigoted thru and thru. Women need to wise up and don't vote for these morons. They need to stop treating women as lesser humans, after all it was women who gave birth to them and all humans on this planet. We have power and it is time to use it.

DON'T Vote republican at any level, need to clean out several states too.

DO VOTE and never set out another election and let this happen to us again. Vote straight Democratic and vote as if our livelihoods depend on it, as they certainly do.

"...women who gave birth to them..." So boys grow up to be men who think that service to men is the only acceptable role for women. That of course includes bearing (a) more boys for manhood and (b) more girls for servanthood. Yes, we have to take the lead and the power, and claim our full humanity. It is obvious that the Greedy Old Pigs (and their young apprentices!) are never to be trusted with our barely century-old vote!

Akin is merely one symptom of a widespread epidemic. The only cure is: do not vote for Republicans. The Democratic Party has its own problems but they have two key assets: they're not Republicans and the Tea Party hates them.

I don't think St. Ayn will help to endear Ryan to the Rep. base, at least it won't if they will take the time to learn a bit about her. I find it hard to believe that Biblical Christians could take her doctrine of total selfishness to heart. Many of the wealthy will of course have no such problem. But then I forget that some Americans don't/won't take the time to read or investigate any Rep. claims and will prefer to take their Fox News whole.

Your "Biblical Christians" are a product of the Jesus Camps, Homeschooling, Right-wing dogma, Faux news and repressive Republicon homes. No small wonder they have scrambled eggs for brains.

I am old enough to remember being told as a girl, "If a girl gets raped, it's her own fault." My (Republicon) father subscribed to this thinking. I was watching a movie the other night which took place in the 1800's, and they were saying the exact same thing about a young woman on her way home, dressed head to tow in tons of fabric, minding her own business when three males grabbed her and dragged her into the woods for a gang attack. This is where the Republicons want to take this country; back to the ignorance of former centuries. It speaks volumes about their ignorance and male arrogance. No one should vote Republicon under any circumstances. A Republicon vote is a vote for stupidity.

You would not find it hard to believe if you realize that what passes for Christianity today has nothing to do with what Jesus Christ said or did.

Paul Stewart: Great comment. Other comments/remark s as well. The "stag" party, fantastic label. "'Lil dauphin" phenominal. Right up there with LDS Mittless as the "Manchurian candidate."

Progressives may not have the $$$ but we sure as hell have the wordsmiths and the humor.

When Kennedy ran for President, he made it clear that he would not mix religion with his job...and that he represented all Americans. I believe he was true to his promise. Frankly, I do not believe that Romney is capable of this. He and his cohorts are a good old boys club who think that women will lie down and let them mow over them--stealing their rights and coercing them to have children they are unprepared to raise. Standing behind them are their wives who smile and gust at their every word...backed up with "wonderful families" made up of equally brainwashed children. I am tired of the nominating committees where millions are spent when people are homeless and starving. This is not the American I used to be proud of. What has happened to us all? I suggest that anyone reading here google Eisenhowers parting speech when he left office about the Military Industrial Complex. He was so right on it is scarey.

I have worked all over the world in the oil industry and I am embarrassed by men, predominately white North American men, who seem to think it is cool to put down, not only women, but others due to the color of their skin, thier religion, or anything else that may fall into disagreement with the white man's culture. Many, who in the protective confines of their cheesie little cliques, openly state the only problem with Obama is the fact that he is black. I no longer work in that environment. I can't. I have seen the treatment of Latinos, Indians, Philipinos, Pakistanis, and the Muslim people who are not representative of the wealthy. Of course all of these "faults" are no longer "faults" if you are wealthy. Who do we think we are?

Since Mitt is a manufactured candidate, he doesn't have a birth certificate per se. But we should ask to see his certification papers.

I have been reading a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, surely a spiritual life for our times since he opposed Hitler and the Nazi 'Xtian' church and was hanged for it on April 8 1945. He and Neimoller and some others created the 'Confessing Church' which 'confessed' to the example of Jesus of the Gospels. He was also a huge part of the Valkyrie plot even though he was a Christian pastor. The church that the Nazis supported was one that called itself christian but was nationalistic, racist (in seeing nothing and doing nothing for the Jews, the mentally challenged, the gypsies, the gays, and all the others who were not like them. This 'church' which seems to be the GOP church of choice is too closely mirrored in some of the churches here-and it is easy to see which is which. As mystic Yeats wrote 'The center cannot hold, things fall apart'-we will once again see 'what rough beast' Hold fast to your highest most spiritual beliefs, gentle readers!

Just for the record, I'm tired of worn-out US dinosaurian references to "Family values" and what a family should be. I know that countries (allies or whatever you like to call them) like Saudi Arabia and most of the Middle East are worse but this is the nation that jets around the world slapping others on their wrists via Mrs (or is is Ms?) Clinton, yet becomes more Medievalist with each passing week in which the current GOP even figures as a significant power-source.
I have an acquaintance in Hawaii who is totally dominated and directed by a "pure Christian" wife who states that she goes along with whatever he says -she just makes sure that what he says is sanctioned and approved by herself first.
Maybe this is what gave us the Palin VP scenario and other prominent female Rethug's like the appalling Brewers and O'Connels, now seemingly at bay somewhere she can find some credibility.
Hitler wanted women to be strictly Hausfraus and progenitors of (preferably) Aryan supermen for the thousand-year Reich.
My Gawd, imagine a future dominated by Rovian-clones with multiple chins or worse, li'l Chuck Norrises -or a combination thereof???!!!
I nominate the Bush dynasty for the best attempt at perpetrating the Corporate-state dream so far. Either way, women lose unless they begin to push back with their own, unique power and wisdom.

Read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. It's all there. Coming soon to a nation near you, as this "Christian" "patriotism" takes more and more hold on the GOP.

Missouri's John Ashcroft: Let's remember that he's the only senatorial candidate in my memory who lost to an opponent who'd died during the campaign. It's tough to lose to a dead man. The deceased's widow was named to the post, and Ashcroft went to the Dept of Justice to lead his colleagues in prayer.
