Chait writes: "It's all too easy to hyperventilate about the importance of this or that campaign development ... but Mitt Romney appears to have blundered his way into a bona fide political disaster with his tax plan."

Romney seems to have painted himself into a corner...who will he please? I bet he self destructs trying to keep his stories straight with the middle class and the corporations.
The Romneyites don't have either "moral or economic" reasons for their positions on taxes or any other aspect of federal law. They do know, as does Romney, that they can get obscenely wealthy by various tricks and ruses, which have been squeezed into our tax policy by a succession of Republican-dominated Congresses. Those of us old enough to remember the dreary days of the 1930s recognize both causes and effects for the current economic debacle, which is deja vu all over again. Obama is no FDR, but his reelection is all that stands between us and irretrievable desolation.
Romney's campaign has been a disaster so far, and this was the easy part. He can't seem to open his mouth without either lying or insulting someone. I find it hard to believe that a candidate that inept can win the election. Romney is a worse candidate than both Bob Dole and John McCain, and that's saying something. Republicans have got to be nervous about this guy. Tampa could be a very strange show.

Please don't forget that W was "elected" twice!
Well, no...he made it into the White House not because he was actually elected either time.
Absolutely..........Well, actually he was SELECTED the first time. The second time an August 14, 2003 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive Diebold Inc.(the company that provided the voting machines) - who had become active in the re-election effort of President Bush - told Republicans that he was"committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to Bush in the coming election. And guess who carried Ohio that election.
The man (?) has shown himself to be a LIAR, over and over again! His positions "change" with the wind. Tonight on Rachel Maddow's Show she ran some footage of him when he was running against Ted Kennedy for the Senate, and again when running for governor of Massachusetts, INSISTING that his opponents reveal their Tax returns!??? WHY, when HE doesn't have to...?! Also, he lied about his residency and "retroactively" filed Massachusetts Tax returns when he, in reality, had been living in Utah! This man (?) is a SNAKE and is NOT to be trusted! Never, EVER vote ReTHUGlican!
Let's just petition Johnny McCain, who keeps insisting that he knows for sure that there's nothing wrong with Mitt's returns, to release them. Mitt won't do it...maybe the maverick will--with a little prodding.

Rmoney is truly a snake - not hiding in the grass - but crawling across our TV screens daily. Haven't you watched him make statements and immediately deny them? The more I see him the more I detest him and what he stands for. We may modify our views as we grow older and more experienced, but we don't let go of the values that shaped our lives. Rmoney says he's always governed as a "severe conservative". We know that's an absolute lie because he's opened himself up to our intense scrutiny. From what I've seen of Rmoney, I can only conclude that he has NO CORE VALUES! The presidency to him is his Pot of Gold. How do you just suddenly become an extreme conservative, never challenging far right wing views? How do you stand on a stage with that snake Donald Trump and listen quietly as he, unchallenged, spouts off his Birther views? How, after implementing a health care plan in MA, do you say you'll repeal the Affordble Care Act on Day 1 of your presidency? How do you support the Ryan budget and try to convince the Little People that it's good medicine for them? And how do you sit with the Isreali priminister and espouse views fed to you by that snake Sheldon Adelson and your other bag men, who, by the way, are sitting right there?
If you lie down with dogs, you will certainly wake up with fleas, and in this case our beloved Nation will be scratching.
I guess Romney was right. He does know how to read a balance sheet. How you balance your revenues makes all the difference. My question: why would working people vote for this guy? Don't they understand that they would be hurt financially by electing him? My head is shaking.
All this, and yet I heard on NPR just yesterday (I think it was David Brook who said it) that the red states across the country are solidly behind Romney, as disgusting as that may be. Obviously they are all the same: the entire party of Greedy Old Pigs is corrupt and rotten to the core.
You don't understand...the repugs hate "that black man" in the WH even more than considering their own best interests. They're "values voters"...hate, bigotry, and fear. It's still god, guns, gays and gestation. With mind sets like that, the only thing that will get them not to vote repug is to learn that Romney himself is gay.
The republican party is more of a cult than an actual political party. People that call themselves die-hard republicans do no thinking for themselves. That's why it appeals so much the the far religious right. Which means they'll vote for whomever their puppet masters tell them to.
Romney is simply a mouthpiece chosen by the corporations so they can have 'one of them' in the White House, to make their get-rich-quick schemes easier to enact.
Part of me almost feel sorry for him. I mean, what are they going to do to him when he fails? (But then I remember: he made a mistake. And he's going to have to live with this mistake for the rest of his life.)

I love that last phrase, Regina. I wish there were more people who really understand where this country is economically. Even if Republicans were to agree to increase taxes on all income over $250,000 - which the president is fighting tooth and nail to get - it's only a pittance since US revenue is down and expenditures up as a result of the Bush Recession. The top earners not only got the biggest tax cut (4.6% compared to 3% for us), but they also benefitted from cuts in capital gains, dividend, and estate taxes. The money was going so fast into the pockets of the rich that it had that "giant sucking sound" so aptly described by Ross Perot. While middle class income has remained flat, the top incomes are off the chart. Their mouthpieces yell "class warfare" as they quietly rake in every dollar "legally" allowed.
"IRRETRIEVABLE DESOLATION" is a perfect description of what will happen if Rmoney is elected!!!
It does not matter what Romney says or how many corners he paints himself into. Money wins elections and he's winning the money race. His billionaire supporters want lower taxes so they are pumping up his campaign coffers. Obama's billionaire supporters are just not as determined, so he will lose.
In 2004 people voted for GW Bush in spite of all the really horrible policies he announed or enacted. GW Bush actually hinted pretty clearly that he would privatize social security, something that bout 80% of people oppose. No matter. He outspent and out lied Kerry. He won. Romney is doing the same thing.
Mitt Romney released 10 years of tax returns to McCain to be vetted as a prospect for McCain's VP. But he wouldn't release the same returns to the American voters to be vetted for the President of the US.

Yes another Romney move that makes no sense at all.
