Hedges writes: "The greatest crimes of human history are made possible by the most colorless human beings. They are the careerists."

Comments

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

I admire Chris Hedges knowledge and perspective. However, this harsh focus on careerists disappoints me. The alienation and dehumanization of humans and default to selfishness (that can lead to atrocity) can occur in the left or right, in any setting. what is more important is how we create political/econo mic/social structures that work against this and how we work to ensure our own compassion and humanity guides our dissent and our efforts to influence other humans.

The 'Expendable Co-operatives', just 'Doing Their Jobs'........ as Paper Pushers, and Para- Police.
...'turning the screws' on the Rest of Us, for The Elite, who never dirty their own hands (perish the Thought)

Without 'sleeping' Co-operatives, who would man the Slaughter Houses and keep the Sheep Obedient, and in the Coral?
Time for a 'Wake-Up Call', but it may take a lot of painful scarcity, or worse.

The argument is perfect, except that, despite the cautionary message, we are being asked to generalize about people in the same way that the "worst" among us generalize about any category of human, whatever the category (race, religion, nationality, economic class, etc.). Living in any given community, we would know people whose livelihood is generated by a "job" for public or private entities. The accountability is always individual, and it is only the individual within the maligned context who can foment change (foment, not advocate!)
