Excerpt: "That was another reason why the night was so dull - not enough saber-rattling about the social issues. But we did get that wonderful Paul soliloquy about birth-control pills, in which he strongly asserted that 'the pills can't be blamed for the immorality of our society.'"

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Angela as Annie . . . yeah but who would play Callista, the plastic dragon lady???
How is it that America has sunk to this lowly status wherein our presidential selection process, at least on one side, has been reduced to a clown show?? Don't we deserve more?

+26 # Barbara K 2012-02-24 12:21
We absolutely deserve more, Artful. It is disturbing that this band of clowns is their best?

Barbara, as a 10 year old child I had the hellish experience of being chased by drunken circus clowns on a rickety "roller coaster" ride. In retrospect, the stench of their breath indicated they may have been carneys from one of the former Soviet republics, but that ride was like a picnic compared to what these Republican Clowns have in store for America. They are truly disturbing.

No, we don't. Does anyone need an explanation why that is?

+1 # X Dane 2012-02-24 23:02
Yes, Richard, I would love an explanation, please.

Artful: I love your referring to Callista as "the plastic dragon lady". Excellent metaphor. I think she moves as stiff as & looks like a Barbie Doll, except for the face.

Barbra Streisand was on the mark in her RSN editorial when she said journalists of today lack the rigor & sharpness of Walter Cronkite in vetting Republican candidates. John King skirted issues & was as dry as the debate. He had the opportunity to get important information to the public. He avoided going after Santorium on his "Satan" remarks & on his archaic ideas about contraception & abortion. He had the opportunity to question all 4 candidates on social issues, anachronism; & their intentions about SS, Medicare & the increasing number of people who are impoverished & needy.

This band of idiots has not a single thing to offer the country by being the President. We all know that their handlers would be pulling the strings for them. The scariest one of all is Santorum. The others are just plain nitwits. I cannot imagine many women voting for any of these women-haters.

Barbara K: I agree! He is one sick guy.
He's a misogynist, delusional, paranoid, control freak.

callista: the only one in the entire race who has come through this carnival completely unscathed.

that's only because no one has asked her why, as a devout catholic, she was having an affair with a married man.

...whose wife was sick.

+22 # gslusher 2012-02-24 13:27
Perhaps Callista should re-read her Bible, as the penalty given there for adultery is being stoned to death.

+10 # dorianb@fuse.net 2012-02-24 18:47
Callista does not look very bright. Newt
looks nervous around her. I think he's worried someone may ask her a question.

As usual, Frank Rich knocks it out of the park.

I can see it now: Secretary of the Treasury Donald Trump. Don't be surprised if that is what Romney promised him. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Of course it's not gonna happen. Barack Obama ought to just sit this one out. Why bother campaigning? Defeating any one of these clowns will be as easy as shooting a school of half-witted fish in a leaky barrel.

The GOP is imploding before our very eyes. Isn't life beautiful?

Tom, They may be imploding before our very eyes,
But the gop, (they only merit lower case. They have sunk so low)

The power in gop, Grover Norquist and the rest of the NO TAX GANG, doesn't give a rat's ass, who is president. In his own words:
"IT doesn't matter, who is president, we just need somebody to sign our bills"

So you see, any of these imbeciles will do fine for Norquist. That's pretty scary, so we better make sure that a "signer" doesn't win in November.

Of course Obama will win, the 'powers that be' already have the best puppet repug in office with him. I've never felt more betrayed by a prez I heartily supported. I recognized Clinton for the lying sack he was and didn't vote for him the 2nd time either. The ONLY person in the congress worthy of my consideration is Dennis Kucinich and he will, unfortunately, never be prez. And, if by some miracle he was elected, would be immediately assassinated.

This Bizzaro panel of candidates would be laughable if they weren't so damned scary. To imagine that any one of these twits could possibly be elected president, and remember, Bush Lite was elected twice, well once and one theft by deception. It is almost impossible to conceive that American citizens would actually vote for these fools. I'm just hoping that these whacky voters do not live next door to me.

The reward for Ron Paul cannot be a "job" in government. He wants to reduce government. The reward should be that he gets to eliminate one job in government, say Senator from Caintucky.
I think there are reasons other than Obama inevitability that kept non-clowns out of the race. Look what happened to Huntsman. The GOP & self described conservatives should be ashamed & alarmed, not alarmed over Obamacare, but genuinely introspective about what they have allowed to happen to honorable conservatism, which older people can recall, vaguely.

Ron Paul, as an MD, gets to not perform all the abortions he doesn't want to.

+5 # dorianb@fuse.net 2012-02-24 20:33
bluepilgrim: Your remark is really funny!

An OB/GYN who differentiates "real rape" from "some other kind of rape", is a misogynist which means he probably enjoys performing abortions.

At least, this time, the "horse race" that the media is so focused on is amusing to watch from a distance; a great distance.

I keep wondering WHY those few 1%ers are funding this giant fiasco. What's the point? What do they hope to gain at this point?

I watched ALL the gop "debates".... I still have head aches.... The word debate did not fit at all. It was a bunch of ridiculous quarrels.

There were next to NO relevant discussions of the important issues facing us today and in the future.

The foreclosures, the millions out of work.......Not mentioned. It was almost surreal. These people were totally out of touch with what is going on in the country... and the world.

None of them are qualified to be in charge of the country or in having a big role in the future of the world.

They do not have the intellect or the interest in making it a better WORLD for our children, All they are interested in is America........Wellllllll,.. like it or not gop. America is PART of the world.

If we do not work at improving it and working with other nations, to avoid wars and other disasters, we are ALL doomed.... We are NOT an island, isolated and able to do as we damned well please...

Time to WAKE UP and FACE REALITY. NONE of the clowns in these so called "debates" have a clue. And they can NOT get to steer the ship of state, for they will steer it right onto the rocks

On the right was a muffin called Newt,

Next to him sat an empty blue suit,

Then came Goody Two Shoes,

And old Howard Hughes,

An incredible assortment of fruit.

Look, obviously I don't know these guys personally (nor would I ever want to, unless they hired me at $3000 per diem). Nevertheless, compared to the unadulterated crap coming out of their mouths day after day, week after week, about any issue, about the president, about the "essence" of this country, anything John McCain said 4 years ago should be carved into marble stones permanently embedded on the lawn in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

If it's possible that one of them is more egregious than the other fools, it has to be Santorum. While Romney is a tone deaf cynic with zero retail political skills, Santorum has strong retail cred; the problem is he's a pernicious religious fanatic who belongs on "Shutter Island", not anywhere near the presidency, except maybe chained to the White House fence...by the neck.

Either Romney pulls out the nomination and gets crushed in the general, or all the pundits are full of it, and a new candidate emerges in the next few weeks to try and salvage the GOP campaign. Personally, I think all the toothpaste is out of the tube, smeared all over the horses' asses that have left the barn. Question: What was real reason for Christie to appear on "Morning Joe" couple of days ago and strut his Take-No-Prisoners "debating" style?

Oh, God, I love this column. The Republicans have truly screwed themselves so badly that no one can take them at all seriously anymore. Surely the Democrats can't be so stupid as to mess this situation up even more and give the 2012 election to the Republicans, but the most incredible thing about American politics these days is the massive stupidity of all politicians at the national level. The saddest thing is that the politicians have put this country into such a tailspin economically and politically, that it may be too late to pull out of it. At all levels, economically, politically, educationally, socially, even militarily, this country may truly be past saving. I am concerned that the U.S. may soon lose its superpower status. We are already deemed mad by Europeans who can't understand our economic policies that favor the superrich at the expense of everyone else. And few politicians and few media people will tell the American public just how dire our problems are. What we need is an FDR to state our problems baldly and a Congress with the guts and common sense to want to do something and be willing to lose office for the good of the country. For the first time in our brief history, it may be too late to become again the country that we were in 1945.

Comparing THIS Republican Primary show-of-shows to the LAST Republican Primary show-of-shows: Same circus - different clowns.
