"Halliburton was working on the Deepwater Horizon rig just before it blew up, opening the well and sending oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Some experts have speculated that the company may have been to blame for the explosion."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Halliburton also bought Boots and Coots, an oil clean-up company, 8 days before the gulf oil disaster.
Sue them. Sue them. Sue them.
If Exxon had been rightfully punished, as the Alaskan Court decided 20 years ago, this might have been avoided. But instead, the $5 Billion punitive settlement was cut to $2.5B and ultimately to $500 Million. Thanks US Supreme Court! Now Libertarians are coming out of the woodwork, saying that the gulf spill wouldn't have happened if One Man owned the ocean because he could sue for damages.
Free Markets are NOT the solution. Selling the oceans and forests is not the solution. We need to nationalize the oil companies, and JAIL the offenders.
Justices who favor corporations (i.e. Kagen & Monsanto) are the ENEMY.

I would agree that some form of community control of natural resources is in order. Liyba came with a formula that has been applied, Country Participation, wherein the host pays the bill and give the development entity 20% of the profit. In America, we remain married to the old model of royalty share-one/eighth override. We should hire them to develop our non-renewable resources.

I had a chilling thought the other day. Was Cheney in cahoots with somebody to blow this rig up? Yikes!

+23 # Guest 2010-06-12 06:09
Interesting, Nancyr. I had the same thought, and we are not alone in the suspicion. There are just as many coincidences as with the World Trade Center buildings leading up to the attack.

It is naive to think there are not motives and agendas involved with the corruption of corporate disasters.

Republicans have never hesitated to harm the nation in favor of coddling campaign donors. Cheney orchestrated much of this whenever he could.

The name Dick Cheney will conjure nasty memories for a long time to come. Hugo Chavez's comment about George W. rings true of Cheney as well. We will smell the stench of the devil long after Cheney is gone.

Cheney has more than proven that many corporate heads, along with government leaders truly are above the law. It will be interesting if anyone other than an underling takes the heat for the Gulf Gusher.

It could be because when Dick Cheney dies, he wants to take the whole world with him.

This dude is really the anti-Christ! He will be remembered as one of the three most evil men in the 21st century.

The other two are GW Bush and Karl Rove.

As for Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Hannity, Glen Beck, these guys are just demons in the service of Satan, himself.

What is wrong with this is, yes, they will also die, but they will resurface again later on in the future. Evil always surfaces when human kind forgets.

I guess, KM, you'll need to define "liberal". Facts are facts, no matter who you are loyal to or what party you have decided is in charge.

How do you excuse these most recent events, and many others in the history of the U.S. Is it possible to hang it on "liberal", "conservative", Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Communist, Libertarian, the NAACP, the AARP, the NRA, Luddites, any one president? Who exactly are involved in these events?

Those of us who read these reports are trying hard to figure it all out. We do know it is complicated. Perhaps you will one day understand.

I like the characterizatio n of this as "Cheney's Katrina", other than the point that it's actually his second. But, just how is it "Obama's Katrina", any more than it was Obama that bailed out the banks that were too big to fail?

I'm no cheerleader for Obams--I think he knew he was promising CHANGE in Washington that a President doesn't have the power to provide--but the offshore rigs were off the leash thanks to Cheny, and the bleeding from dog bites you can't reach is hard to stop.

I had the revolting thought yesterday that the oil spill was the deliberate work of the oil industry to destroy President Obama, but then I thought, what am I, a conspiracy theorist, a BP truther?

Now I'm waiting to see how this unfolds.

I'm hoping against hope that "Cheney's Katrina" replaces "Obama's Katrina" (which it never was). But we have the Republican echo chamber to deal with.

In the thirty years of Corporations Uber Alles, the United States has wantonly sacrificed all that is decent, righteous and estimable to the axiom of profits for few. The historical review of a nation that bankrupted its values for a sea of oil will not be kind. Bush glibly shouts out for international war crimes. Cadres of 'black ops' agents murder, plunder and terrorize with impunity and encouragement from a populace willing to trade respect for a false security.

Our civil rights have been exchanged for a quid pro quo of hedonism and rapacity, where you have a right to personally self destruct while the powerful burn the globe.

Thirty years of apocalyptic 'scorched earth' style politics and demonizing our own citizens have resulted in a polarized, spiteful and resentful country, where many are certain that they are getting the oily end of the shaft, but don't have any viable recourse but to find someone to blame, and to feel victimized by.

The profit motive beats all.
If you can't start a war, you blow up an oil well.

+16 # Guest 2010-06-12 12:21
Dick Cheney is silent because he knows he is responsible for the many catastrophes involving the oil industry. Now, the thing to do is to get all the former Bush appointees and Bush/Cheney minded people out of the current administration. I'm not sure this will help but it's a start. I am not so naive as to think that there aren't more of these unscrupulous people waiting in the wings to take their place.

What I can't understand is how these unscrupulous people can't foresee the terrible future that will result from their actions.

This reminds me of the Three Stooges; Halliburton breaks it, then hire Halliburton to fix it. The Stooges were repairing lunch pails that had holes in them for "a nickle a hole." First they were punching the holes in the workers' lunch pails. Another time was when they were exterminators and could not find work. They climbed into someone's house, put mice, ants, and bugs everywhere, climbed out of the window and rang the doorbell asking the lady of the house if they need exterminators. She said yes, "Heaven must have sent for you."

Cheney only speaks when he can churn up his base to defend him and his policies. He knows that even his base can't defend his involvement in this catastrophe....so he keeps his ridiculous mouth shut on this one.

Dich Cheney is silent because he has already prevailed. Industrialized life needs oil, coal and gas. Try living without these energy resources. If big energy shut down their systems for 30 days you would see what your life would become. Do not flip the switch, go outside and read. About 3 weeks from now you would not have to go to the service station for gasoline because you will know that there is none. When we had the situation in 1973 John Denver went and purchased 3,000 gallons of fuel for his tank. What size is your tank?

Where is DickC? Last I heard he went to Riyadh right after the blowout. Does he have a spider hole over there in which he's hiding?
