Butigan writes: "Nuclear weapons have been U.S. society's plumb line for seven decades. Even when other issues capture our attention and the atomic threat fades in and out of public consciousness, nuclear arms and their sprawling reach - physical, political, cultural, economic, psychological - endure. They are always somewhere in the picture, even if we happen to be looking elsewhere."

Comments

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Here is a nuclear scenario: Israel delays pre-emptive move on Iranian nuclear efforts. UN continues diplomatic agenda. Syria/Iran attempt WMD (Chemical-Biolo gical) methodologies to cripple destroy Israel. Close call-

Israel retaliates, as Egypt and Lybia jump in also. Israel, against the wall, finally goes nuclear all around. This is from strategic think tanks, all of whom rate an Israeli pre-emption orders of magnitude less severe than simply waiting for the promised attack.

To continue the think tank scenario: Israel suffers high casualty losses, particularly Tel Aviv, main target threatened by Iran & Syria. Israel disables Iran, Damascus loses title as world's oldest continuous metropolitan complex, Egypt swims in flood from leaky Aswan Dam, and Libya says uncle about then. (Libya saved in part because distance and cold feet delayed their participation...

These things might occur in the next presidential term. Israel may attempt pre-emption, and succeed in part, but the other players will make only politically correct response, and be rebuffed without massive wounds. In the case of pre-emption, that would be the signal for a true worldwide effort to be serious about freezing the Nuclear Arms Race.

Oh, one other thing. In a truly egregious Middle East slugfest, Pakistani leaders (Islamic Bomb charter member) should make absolutely clear they are neutral bystanders! Just sayin'
