Rev. Bess writes: "If Jesus were present among us today, he would be moving from Portland, to Los Angeles, to Kansas City, to Dallas, up to Chicago and on to Wall Street in New York City. He would join the protest in every city. He would be demanding an overhaul of our financial and banking system. He would be standing with the poor and their allies - and against the rich and their protectors."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

I am a Christian, I support OWS, and I believe Jesus was called the greatest revolutionary. He went against what the greedy religious leaders stood for in His day. He was humble and people listened. WWJD? He would be peacefully sitting in Liberty Park and other OWS locations talking to the young people gathered there.

The right wingers have turned Christianity into something that is barely recognizable. I had to look long and hard to find a church that wasn't touting some right wing nut job agenda, its very sad to me that they use Jesus' name to rationalize all their BS.

"He went against what the greedy religious leaders stood for in His day"

And THAT, is why they crucified Him.

If Jesus was walking this Earth today, the Department of Homeland Security would crucify him again, and the Murdoch/Rove/Limbaugh bunch would rationalize and propagandize so that the fearful amongst us would accept and side with the evil.

And so it goes, on and on. When will we ever learn?

This is so true, I had to say it again.

Would be appropriate and beneficial for tthe Nation If our citizens take more time reading our incredible Founding Fathers THOMAS JEFFERSON and BENJAMING FRANKLIN..Doing that, people could find better answers to problems in America and could reasoning better.

Right -- Jesus would not recognize "Christianity" in this day. Though I am, I cannot call myself "Christian" in this time when the term means hatred, greed, violence and "dominion" over everything made by God. (Don't y'all love that Queen of Christianity Michele Bachmann has condemned Newt Gingrich for his "amnesty" toward illegal immigrants? Perfect case in point. Smite that Jezebel, please, O Lord!)
As long as we follow that single commandment -- that we love one another -- Jesus is right there on the street, dodging cubs and pepper spray beside us.
What also will happen, in its own time and own way, is that the counting tables of Chase and Bank of America and Citibank, etc. will be turned over, and
sweet Jesus will have at the jackals in charge with his hickory switch or two-by-four. Better, in that day, for the broken-hearted (and empty-pocketed) that we are.

According to the Bible, not preachers, Jesus was a 99%er.

When he turned over the tables of the money changers in the Temple, he was teaching His followers how to handle Wall Street.

His message is universal and transcends time. However, it does not suit the banksters and their prostitutes in the republican party's agenda.

Hi folks, I read your comments on the other RSN articles and very close to always agree with you. How nice to see you here, but not surprising. I agree wholeheartedly with you both in your statements here. I also am a Christian but because the right-wingers call themselves "Christians" I have started calling myself a Jesus follower. It seems to me that the right-wingers are more Old Testament than New. I know that the head of the Baptists (don't know which branch it is but it's the biggest one) said on NPR's Fresh Air program that the Baptists worship the Bible not Jesus because the Bible is the Word of God. Is that strange or what? "In the beginning was the Word..." says John in the first verse of his Gospel, going on to equate the Word with Jesus, as you all know.

Anyway, I agree that Jesus was definitely a 99%er -- all through the Gospels he's the champion of the poor and needy, both spiritual and physical, and has given us the same job.

I appreciate Pastor Bess' take on the OWS movement. Obviously, he ISN'T at one with the Baptists whose leader was on Fresh Air!

Jesus would be sleeping with the 99%ers. His was a Social Justice message. He went up against the oligarchs of his day - the Sadducees, Pharisees, bankers (money-changers) and the Roman rulers. There was a marriage between church, state, and big business. He was killed because they saw when he rode triumphantly thru Jerusalem on Palm Sunday that he was stirring up the people and they feared a revolution. Then he attacked the money-changers on Monday. They knew he had to be eliminated. He was too dangerous. He was standing with the 99% and so must we today.

Yes! The Religious establishment was and still IS, in too many instances, the Fat Cats that Jesus came to "correct". It is not only what Jesus "WOULD do Or what Jesus "DID" as much as what He IS DOING.

It is little wonder that the "Religious Leaders" are not out supporting the 99%OWS, they have little to show for their support for the 99% but much to show their support for the 1%

Some have even called Preachers the "Gate Keepers" for the 1%.

God is "DOING" His work in this World in spite of the Preachers, Priests and Rabbis. AND He is doing it through the "Least of these" His Brethern...

Thank you Rev. Bess for this bold and long over due article.

Why we see so many atrocities in the world?! Religious members of NATO throwing bombs over innocent children. Millions of American children are starving . In poor countries people die for lack of water, food and medication. But 1% live in opulence around the world. CIA agents torture and assassinate in the name of freedom and police officers ,that I think call christian themself, beat our young protestors that fight for justice and a better future. If you ask the people responsible for this violations and atrocities, they like you, believe in god.

Dear Rev. Bess:

Was not Jesus sacrificed to appease imperialism?

The American federal imperial statutes of 1871 and 1973, whose blatant unconstitutiona lity the US Supreme Court will not permit to be argued, are the ultimate cause of the current abeyance of constitutional democracy under the rule of law in the pursuit of Justice, Tranquility, defence, Welfare and Liberty.

That constitutional statement of five ostensibly secular values arguably implements the message of love that was so threatening in the Roman imperial era. Well, it is just as threatening to the proponents of the American imperial era.

The People are one, or at least 99%, but imperialists can not abide the perception of unity and equality. Empires require patricians on high and plebeians down low, the one to dominate and the other to serve, and anyone who seriously threatens the security of the hierarchy has got to be terminated.

Beware 99% it is going to get worse before it gets better, if things can get better before it is too late.

Cheers (anyway),
W'Lawpsh

JJeses ledt us his commandment tp"love one another as I have loved you". He also left us, saying tht he would send us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Relqtionship.
In these terrible time, we, the 99% are raising the sonciousness of mankind to this moe universal, more cosmic view of life on earth. This life is within us. We can feel its power --relationship. It cannot be forced nor can it use force.

What 'being Christain' far too often is today: spiritual masturbation. What being a 'proud American' today is: fascist, greed and power addiction approval.

Time for all to take off the blinders, leave selfishness laden La La Land behind, and jump aboard the 'donkey' that carries us into more love, more caring, more giving, more sharing.

CENTRAL PARK OCCUPATION & CONCERT

The movement took off and maintained vigor owing to the physical occupation of Zucotti Park. Now it is suffering from the lack of such a central space.

Jesus isn't here in person, so we need some really big musical talent to step up and create anthems for the permanent Occupation of Central Park. This would give the NYC movement back what it needs and help rekick-start things nationwide. This could be epic and go down in history.

We need Phish, Neil Young and others NOW.

One of the reason that I admire. Rev. Barry W. Lynn is for his position as executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. In its mission this organization mentions "the right to live your life as you see fit without interference from aggressive religious groups who want to impose their doctrines on you with the help of the government."
I believe this separation makes the society stronger and healthier.
In these pages, thousand of times ,we criticize politicians. So,I think is not productive for the Nation,to mix people believe with any political right or wrong actions. What OWS demands from the government is to act and legislate,in the benefit of American citizens,FOR THE PEOPLE.
I want to share what Thomas Jefferson said in a letter to Danbury Baptist Association,CT on January 1, 1802 :
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man an God,that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative power of government reach actions only, and no opinions,I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof",thus building a wall of separation between church and State".

Jesus was a protestor. He went into the Temples and demanded the idols be taken down. He showed both the Israelites and Romans that greed, vengeance etc were exactly the sins against his Father. The Bible is a prime example of Man's sins.
As a Diary of man's migration it also shows that the men who wrote in the name of God were exploiting the very sins and laws of the same Creator they preached of. History seems to be repeating for all those who are so educated, I wonder in what. Preaching the bible is a foolish waste of time if one doesnot follow by example what to do or not to do?
Jesus died because the Israelites were afraid of His Following, Romans egged on by Israel Paranoia, could not afford an upsurt. Rome liked things the way they were, rendering unto Caesar and all.

the only churches here in USA who are not teaching the Truth, getting their Parishioners to get up and fight are the greedy ones. Ones teaching 'their bible' they will be punished as were all before. We will not tolerate here or anywhere, any more Puritans or Nazis.

Old Saying was to Stand Up and Be Counted for Your Faith and Your Country...now is the time for man to come together to end the Tyranny.
