Exerpt "The CIA shared with George W. Bush's Justice Department the details of how an interrogation strategy - with an emphasis on forced nudity and physical abuse - could train prisoners in 'learned helplessness' and demonstrate 'the complete control of Americans.'"

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Hey, Chuck! What gives you the notion that these human rights violations and atrocities all ended when Obama was inaugurated? Sure, Bush is a war criminal many times over, but what can we say of Obama, under whose leadership these (and other Bush era) personal-level-terrorism practices persist . . . are sanctioned if not encouraged? If the targets of our torture are "inhuman monsters", then what are we when we turn the tables?

maddave, Good point. No reason to believe Obama is doing much different. About 3/4 of his Presidency could be coined "Bush Lite." Manning is no jihadist. I shudder to think what else our "freedom loving" country that basks in the glory of God is inflicting upon that kid. The very fact he's still in jail and being tortured i.e. solitary confinement, str ipped of clothing
proves your point of Obama's complicity.

Bush and his cronies should be made to walk around D.C. in the nude, what monsters thought of this. It was always said that we never tortured, I believe we probably always have. It is a disgrace what they are doing to Pvt. Manning, guilty of not. How about doing this to a few of our politicians and Wall Street monsters?????

The GWB administration was digusting for so many reasons and criminal in many. Obama ended the procedures described in the article. Good! But until he prosecutes those responsible, he is complicit.

DPM: Obama is more than complicit. He is the present commander-in-chief who is authorizing a treatment of Bradley Manning that continues the practice of Bush/Cheney. Obama has made his own journey to the dark side, and now inhabits the special space delineated by Bush/Cheney where moral law is suspended.

Just another disgusting foray into the depths we have sunk as a nation. Japanese and German interrogators after WWll were executed for doing some of the things Bush and Co. ordered and perhaps are still being done. "De-humanization" techniques have proved only marginally effective according to many who have been involved in the process but the mindset of the debased often looks for to such methods, because, quite frankly, their impatience and ignorance leads to no other working solution. We are witnessing the decline of civilization. It is historically fascinating and morally repugnant. Parry's article could easily have been titled "Naked Aggression."

tomo. I stand corrected. You are absolutely correct.
