Young writes: "I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care."

If Bush and Cheney were to read this guy's letter (which I doubt), he'd get a shrug and a yawn. Right-wing nuts avoid military service like the plague, and I'm sick of hearing about how patriotic they are. Conniving to get involved in another war doesn't make anybody a patriot.

Bush was AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard, couldn't even be bothered to update his pilot's license, then went off to campaign for some right-wing nut in Alabama who lost the election. He would have been jailed for that except for daddy protecting his sorry ass.

Obama did not "avoid military service." He's not exactly the kind of physical specimen the military is looking for, any more than FDR was. The President is not required to be Audie Murphy.

You might take a look at all those right-wing nuts and see how many served in the military. You won't find very many besides Daddy Bush and Bob Dole. Mitt Romney, pimping for the Mormons in Paris? Paul Ryan? Rush Limbaugh? You'll find that most Republicans these days are warmongering chickenhawks.

+54 # rockieball 2013-03-19 15:57
You also forgot that Bush went AWOL, was banned from flying and never saw combat. He spent his time defending the gulf of Mexico and working (while AWOL) in the campaign to elect a Republican Governor. Don't pass the buck edge. Obama inherited this mess, the Republicans have done everything to keep us in it

I've read that G. W. Bush's fighter pilot training and service cost the taxpayers about one million dollars. It must have been worth it, since the Viet Cong were obviously dissuaded from their planned invasion of Texas.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cheney had more important items on his agenda, like staying alive and advancing his political career. He never let ethics stand in the way of becoming rich and powerful.

+14 # JJS 2013-03-19 18:07
Instead of focusing on "military service" let's look at "community service". Who avoided community service?
As for the details of Bush's "military service", read history.

+19 # tabonsell 2013-03-19 19:30
Let's see. Obama was born in 1961 and the Viet Cong began their uprising in the fall of 1960. So, just how was he supposed to serve in the conflict that Bush and Cheney ran and hid from? When that war ended in 1974, Obama was 13 years old, still too young to serve.

For your information, Bush was in the Texas Air National Guard that trained in obsolete interceptor fighters. If he were called to action, his training would have been worthless and he would have to be trained all over. Plus, the Viet Cong didn't have any aircraft that needed to be intercepted.

Yep, Dimwits was in the Military; keeping the skies of Texas Vietcong-free before going AWOL. And he's about the only one of his cabal of chooky-hawk-cow ards, especially Mr "Seven-deferral s" Cheney, to even join up in a time of general conscription to feed bloody war to the Corporate State under false pretenses in a country where they had no business -as usual.

Asleep at the wheel Bush and Cheney were the men responsible for the 9 11 attacks.
Totally uninterested in preventing attacks by terrorist before they happened they will know to their last breath they let their country down, and for both men it was not for the first time.
Pretending that their responsibility to keep America safe began the day after the attacks is one of the great whitewashes of the facts of all time.
Their decision to pick the low hanging fruit that invasion of a already defeated Iraq offered to bolster their inept cowardly administrations reputation resulted in the largest blunder in our nations history.
I thank Thomas Young for his well meant service to our country and grieve for him and thousands of others who gave their lives for America only to be slapped by the betrayal of those in power to spend their lives not for an honest righteous and judicious cause, but for politics power and greed.

More than asleep at the wheel-- B & C are not only guilty of war crimes but of treason. The whole report of the commission into the 9/11 attack was a farce. The destruction of the three buildings was part of their plan from the beginning.

+8 # futhark 2013-03-20 20:42
I would rather think that the 9/11 attacks were a hoax, not a farce. They achieved their intended goal in mobilizing support for American military action in the Middle East. A farce is an event that does not contribute toward the attainment of its intended goal.

The official report and account of 9/11 won't be a farce until the public wakes up to the realization that they have been flim-flammed and that the Islamic militants accused of planning and executing the attacks only participated as scapegoats to deflect suspicion away from the real perpetrators, who are still at large and are probably mostly within the boundaries of the United States, not on the other side of the planet.

+37 # Glen 2013-03-19 13:04
Cheney and all associated with him were not "asleep at the wheel", overanddone. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing and the plan was in the making years ago. The attack on Iraq was not a blunder and all of those people are not inept. They organize and plan well, and just like Rove, have no morals or conscience. The lives they are responsible for ruining do not keep them awake at night, including American citizens left in their wake over the years.

In December 1997 Taliban were wined and dined by Unocal and Halliburton to get them to sign a contract to build a 800 mile plus pipeline through Afghanistan. When the deal fell through when the Taliban signed with a Russian firm. They were told in no uncertain terms that when they (The Republicans were back in power) they would be removed. It was also know at that time that Osama had been in Afghanistan since 1996. One of the first things Bush/Cheney administration did after invading the country was give Unocal the contract back.

Immediately after Afghanistan was attacked and then Iraq, there were discussions online, the majority of which expressed rage over the attacks. When the death count rose both U.S. military and Middle East citizens, the rage increased, including my own. After speaking with ex-students and their reaction to having been sent to Iraq, it became obvious the crimes there were worse than we all imagined, and that, yes, it was murder, and not battle.

Nothing in public media concerning this. Of course now, there is condemnation from many sides of media. Those who are now analyzing and condemning, in my mind, are as guilty as the government for literally promoting the "March to War".

As in all wars, the crimes are unforgivable and the losses and suffering great. A shame too many have not learned and continue to support the killing with their silence. AND the likes of Cheney, et al.

I seriously doubt, Robert B, that they would bother to read it even if it were handed to them on a silver platter. Vermin like them are, on the surface, disinterested in what anybody else thinks of them. But there is a little space deep down inside where they KNOW they are guilty, and they will go to great lengths to avoid ever having to face and acknowledge it.

And like you, overanddone, I thank Mr. Young and grieve for him and all who have been so grievously affected by the Bush/Cheney/Rum my lies and deception. His statement is eloquent in its indictment of those responsible for his and all the others' deaths and trauma, injuries and pain. I don't believe it could be said any better, and I WISH both bush and cheney could somehow be forced to sit and listen to it. They'd never admit its truth, but deep down inside, they KNOW, and they need to sit and squirm in the hell they created for so many others.

We can go to prison for being caught with weed in a pocket. We can go to prison -- uncharged -- and suffer the agonies of the damned -- for telling our country the truth about what has been done to others, in OUR name.

But this pair of smirking fiends who have killed or ruined the lives of millions are not only loose, but living high on the hog at our expense -- with a bunch of suckers STILL cheering for them.

When will SOMEBODY start a serious move to pull the plug on Bush and Cheney? When will we be able to show the world that we mean JUSTICE?

Until that day, the thinkers among us lie down in sorrow, and wake up in shame.

What can we say to our CHILDREN about taking responsibility for our actions?

What can anyone say to Tomas Young?

Dying Iraq War veteran Tomas Young has written a devastatingly frank open letter to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

It is a 21st Century version of Emile Zola's famous "J'Accuse" penned during the Alfred Dreyfus scandal which rocked France during the first decade of the 20th Century.

Both powerful letters involve exposing egregious base lies of the State and the narcissistic cover-ups of those despicable liars and duplicitous murderers at its helm.

I'm inclined to agree with you about Liberals not being attracted to the military -why would even a mildly creative person want to be part of a death machine?
What you so conveniently neglect to include in your selective post is that (quote inspectors) "Although some degraded remnants of misplaced or abandoned chemical weapons FROM BEFORE 1991 were found (when Hussein was "Our bad guy"), they were not the weapons which had been one of the main arguments for the invasion." (sic).
Remember Joe Wilson's statement to the CIA that "there's no indication that Iraq is buying yellowcake." (sic) for which he and his wife were hounded, condemned and discredited.
Have you heard of inspectors Hans Blix or Scott Ritter who were there reporting in full detail?
Can't you read?

Saudi, oil, any and all other excuses -- even the storied evil idiocy of Dubya and Cheney -- are mere sideshows to the real action: making the Middle East the stomping ground for the USrael "entangling alliance." You wonder why they refuse to prosecute them? It is because they support the same bastards who were behind the IRaq war. The ultra and not so ultra rich who are never satisfied with what they have and want it all, as if even having it all would satisfy them.

The political and corporate criminals, in this country, if they aren't put on trial, legally, for their crimes, should be put on "mock" trial. Their guilty verdicts to be humiliated, harassed and driven out of this country and their means of making a living. It needs to be done until others that might be tempted to do the same, think twice and take the "high road" to benefit society, instead of rot it from within.

Where’s Hell When You Need It?

God I miss hell.
Not hell on Earth
-that’ll always
be with us.
Just as it’s with
our legless, armless, faceless,
IED’d
18,000
and counting.
Just as it’s with
those who loved
and love
the boxed, flagged, unphotographed,
2,300
and counting
and
the shocked & awed
30,000 to 100,000
and counting.

No,
what
I miss
is the hell
AFTER Earth
I wish
I still
believed in.

‘Cause if I did
I’d rest assured
the evildoers
who lied
us
into war
would
one day
be
going to
their just
re
war
d.

If I could
once again
believe
in hell
after Earth
I’d sleep in peace
knowing
the warmakers
awarding taxcuts
to the rich
while exacting
sacrifice
from us

would
forever
slow-turn & squawk
like chickenhawks
on demons’
spits.

Instead
I toss & turn
all night
seeing
the architects
of invasion
fleeing
their mess
to run
The World Bank
or
ranch
out West,
spinning tall tales
by the fire…..
telling more lies
about their lies.

And when each one
finally
dies
what if he
simply dies?
-Guiltlessly,
complacently,
somehow
imagining
he’s
done
something
right?

well, maybe one good thing about not believing in "religion" is that people can't get off on fantasies about hell.

not that i don't, myself, think the bastards deserve it.

i am working on the theory that "do unto others..." means that you will be reincarnated in a place where what you did to others will be done to you. as often as it takes for you to learn what it means "I will have mercy and not sacrifice."

"Volunteer" military my foot! How "voluntary" is it when a kid comes out of high school, one of 200 in an American backwater where the Depression has closed down just about everything, and there IS no job? There IS no money for college and besides, the family is desperate for help -- not another adult mouth to feed.
Now comes the Recruiter. The promises. What would YOU do, RLF? One thing, you'd learn some compassion.

+29 # vt143 2013-03-19 15:41
What does that possibly have to do with people lying and shamelessly using the volunteer military??? Mr. Young volunteered out of patriotism and he was used by Cheney, et al. The fact that he volunteered does not give anyone carte blanche to abuse him.

+6 # RMDC 2013-03-20 05:08
I agree with you about the criminal abuse of volunteers. but people need to get more careful about what they volunteer for. People need to understand what the US military is. It is not a force that "defends the US after an attack." It is a force for global destruction. All it does is destroy nations and kill millions of people. It has always been that way. Go back to the Indian wars between 1865 and 1920 when the US military really became a mature institution. Was it defending America. No, it was on a genocidal campaign. The military still honors its Indian war days by naming lots of its campaigns and equipment after Indians. It even calls war zones like Iraq "Indian country."

So Tomas Young did not know he was volunteering for a genocidal, torture corps. That's the problem. He made a big mistake. but it is also our problem because we don't educate ourselves and all young people about what the US military really is.

Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket" should be required reading in ALL US high schools. Nick Turse's "Kill Anything That Moves" should be required reading for all Americans.

Everyone should know as a knee jerk reaction that the US military is a death cult which kills and destroys the lives of millions and millions of innocent people. If Tomas wants to join it as some psychopaths will, then he will never need to write a letter to Dick Cheney. Cheney joined the death cult just as Young did.

And job options are limited these days, so many join up with seductive marketing "limited chance of combat involvement" and promises of free college tuition if they survive.
I saw them at work in my daughter's high school before they were told to desist by teachers and families alike.
And BTW VIETNAM was NOT voluntary service but Cheney managed to wangle his way out with seven deferments due to "other priorities" and Dimwits went AWOL.

And yet Cheney the Ghoul keeps saying that he'd do it all over again just the same -his own seven deferments from Vietnam "For other priorities" notwithstanding , and Dimwits' stint keeping the skies of Texas safe from the Vietcong before going AWOL.
And you can chuck born-again Catholic "Unaware Blair" into the mix of murderers and war criminals as well as "Rummy", "lost an election to a dead guy" Ashcroft, plus the Project for a New American Century crowd led by that bumptious braggart William Krystol and Condosleaszy Rice, who has bee subsequently rewarded for her incompetence and arrogance by becoming one the two first women members of the Augusta National hugely exclusive golf Club.
Such are the fates of true warmongers and perpetrators of mayhem at home and abroad in the Corporate State.
This same crowd also succeeded in getting the US roundly hated and discredited around the world, even by former allies.
To the tower -or exile in Paraguay locked in the Bush compound where they can be hit with a dose of depleted uranium scatter-bombs with which they were so generous in polluting Iraq, and Afghanistan and which poisoned their own troops just being around, handling and launching them.
And don't forget the treasures of one of the the former cradles of civilization that they destroyed and tuned loose to looting with "Shock and awe".

not to worry these idiots will come back as lesser life--perhaps as ugly cockroach or as mutated human with no legs or normal brain..and cross-eyed..mot her karma always balances thing out and i am sure that these thugs will have the most miserable time of their life when their death-time approaches ..by the way--these criminals were also behind the 9/11 disaster..maybe some day the 9/11 will be invested by non- re-puke-licans. .by those who will seek the real truth of 9/11.

Whenever I hear from a vet like Mr. Young I want somebody to take B & C to the Hague to stand trial just like the Nazi war criminals did - but there is nobody to do this because the money that put them into office still puts the same type in our government and now we are the war machine of the world. I wish nobody would enlist but many do because they cannot get a job in this stupid economy.

Bless you, Mr. Young and I send you a BIG HUG

Perhaps that is why the republicans are trying so hard to keep the economy from improving. Then they blame it on Obama and the ignorant and uneducated believe them.

Yes, Mr. Young, I feel for your pain and suffering, but remember, you were NOT drafted, and you failed to see the obvious thing that the so-called "9/11" was faked, and most importantly - YOU WERE ONE OF THE INSURGENTS, you were one of the Occupying Power's insurgent forces, which destroyed everything of the Iraq culture except the oil fields. Yes, you were misled by war criminals, but remember to not keep passing all the blame up the chain of command, that does not wash - "I was just following orders" has proved to not be a justifiable excuse in previous war crimes trials.

And Bush wasn't just AWOL. He was a deserter. AWOL is defined by the Uniform Code of Military Justice as an absence w/o leave of 30 days or shorter. Bush was gone for MONTHS before he finally reported to his Air Nat'l Guard unit in Alabama. He went unpunished for that and he has thus far gone unpunished for all the crimes of his disastrous administration.

Justice will Never be served again in this country until those responsible for this Travesty are brought to the bar to answer for their crimes, not only against this young man and countless thousands more, but our Country and Humanity, as well! They and their ilk belong to the Dark side and have insinuated themselves into our highest offices in the land and have stealthily begun the toxic infection that is consuming us from within! This young man speaks for ALL of us! God may forgive the Bush/Cheney Regime, I can't believe I EVER will!

Arguing about my side served, didn't serve, couldn't serve, is totally defeating.

That's not the issue. The issue is *both* sides start wars, fund wars and do it stealing from *us* (our tax money). Nobody stood up to Bush/Cheney/Wol fowitz and got away with it.

Now the same filth is beating the drums against Iran/Syria/Smyr na Georgia or wherever they think they can get away with it. They have to bleed us dry in order to destroy the country. They're destroying the country and using social issues as a diversion. Gay Marriage, Latino rights, womens' rights *are* important but behind them is the real plan. Just read the Patriot Act/Military Commissions Act/Agenda 21. Stop **that**.

Thank you Tomas Young for your letter, and for your courage. My heart goes out to you in your grief, but I know that your divine spirit will live on in a new world, a place where there will be no people such as George W. Bush or Dick Cheney to tarnish it with their evil.

Please consider signing my petition to celebrate the death of George W. Bush. The celebrations will be held in nation wide gatherings to express your joy that this horrible creature is finally descending into hell where he belongs as a charter member - when he dies! Here is the link to my petition: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/celebrate-death-george-w-bush-worldwide/Qnxb8gVv. Thank you.
