We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

What a load of bullshit. Syria is being invaded by mercenaries trained, armed, and paid by the CIA. Some of the fighters are the same ones who destroyed Libya. Their goal for Syria is the same as they did to Libya. They shoot innocent protesters because they know the pathetic media in the US like the New Yorker will report only what the US State Department says, i.e., that Assad's forces are doing the kiilling.

Assad and Syria have every right in the world to defend themselves from the paid terrorists of the CIA. I just wish they'd do more.

Take a look at the new US ambassador to Syria -- Robert S. Ford. He is a protoge of John Negroponte, a veteran of the rural pacification program in Vietnam and the death squad wars in Central America of the 80s. Ford was Negroponte's deputy ambassador to Iraq when the surge -- i.e., death squads - were implemented there. Now Ford is bringing the Salvadoran option to Syria -- massive death squads and terrorism.

If you read or watch news from outside the US you will find that most people in Syria support Assad and definitely don't want to end up like Libya. But the New Yorker can't bother with doing any research. It has a story to tell -- the US government's story -- and that's all that matters. Americans are so misled by their media that it is pathetic. They have no idea what the US is doing in the Arab or Muslim world.

Friends who live in Syria are clear that the vast bulk of the population support Assad. Tipping his regime out will lead to another Arab Spring, which will almost certainly be winter for many living within its borders. As it is Syria has been the safest place for christians and other minorities within the whole of the Middle East. Not for much longer it would seem.

have the same reaction as RMDC. Last two paragraphs are criminal - calling bombing of Libya/starting civil war "humanitarian intervention" is absurd.

RMDC: I don't know all the facts you quote, but I know you are very well informed, I also know the New Yorker is a government arm of its propaganda, so I am very leary of what I read from them...The CIA is at play all around the world, we would be better off with out this agency...

The US withdrew its ambassador to Syria in 1995 after the assassination of Rafic Hariri, which the US wanted to blame on Syria. It is now believed that he was assassinated by Israeli Mossad. Then suddenly in Jan. 2011 just two weeks after the Arab Spring broke out in Tunisia, Obama appointed Robert S. Ford to be US ambassador to Syria.

Ford is not any ordinary diplomat. He's a specialist what the CIA and Pentagon call "counter-insurg ency warfare." That is really a misnomer since there has never been an insurgency that the US wanted to counter. It is really a program to terrorize a population into submission. The US State Department and Pentagon and CIA regard the "counter-insurg ency" program in El Salvador in the 1980s to be a model for success. What happened there was that 1/3 of the population was murdered, driven into exile, tortured, or disappeared. The main guy running the Salvadoran operation was John Negroponte.

Ford is a student of this sort of US "diplomacy." He was Negroponte #2 guy in Iraq. This story has been well covered by globalresearch. ca. The fact that The New Yorker appears not to know anything about the US role in organizing, arming, and funding the mercenaries is not excusable.

The 'Arab Spring' will soon turn into Islamist governments all over the middle east, and with those governments...t housands of deaths and abuse. This is a natural process and when they get good and tired of Islamist and being pariachs, they will change into something reasonable for their citizens. US caused this with it's policies and any intervention will just prolong the process. Nice going US!
