Gourevitch begins: "In Syria, over the past nine months, agents of President Bashar al-Assad's security apparatus have killed more than five thousand citizens, according to the United Nations. That's an average of about twenty citizens a day since March, when peaceful demonstrators took to the streets to protest the Assad family's forty-year dictatorship and the slaughter began."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.
General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.
Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Assad and Syria have every right in the world to defend themselves from the paid terrorists of the CIA. I just wish they'd do more.
Take a look at the new US ambassador to Syria -- Robert S. Ford. He is a protoge of John Negroponte, a veteran of the rural pacification program in Vietnam and the death squad wars in Central America of the 80s. Ford was Negroponte's deputy ambassador to Iraq when the surge -- i.e., death squads - were implemented there. Now Ford is bringing the Salvadoran option to Syria -- massive death squads and terrorism.
If you read or watch news from outside the US you will find that most people in Syria support Assad and definitely don't want to end up like Libya. But the New Yorker can't bother with doing any research. It has a story to tell -- the US government's story -- and that's all that matters. Americans are so misled by their media that it is pathetic. They have no idea what the US is doing in the Arab or Muslim world.
And this is what USrael is doing to Syria NOW.

Syria supports anti-Israeli groups like Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas, whose leadership is based in Syria.
When will Israel return stolen/occupied Golan Heights? UN should concentrate on occupation of Syria's Golan Heights!
The Shiite Sunni Divide killed before US got involved. Saudi money pours into the US
Ford is not any ordinary diplomat. He's a specialist what the CIA and Pentagon call "counter-insurg ency warfare." That is really a misnomer since there has never been an insurgency that the US wanted to counter. It is really a program to terrorize a population into submission. The US State Department and Pentagon and CIA regard the "counter-insurg ency" program in El Salvador in the 1980s to be a model for success. What happened there was that 1/3 of the population was murdered, driven into exile, tortured, or disappeared. The main guy running the Salvadoran operation was John Negroponte.
Ford is a student of this sort of US "diplomacy." He was Negroponte #2 guy in Iraq. This story has been well covered by globalresearch. ca. The fact that The New Yorker appears not to know anything about the US role in organizing, arming, and funding the mercenaries is not excusable.
