So why in the world do we never ever DEMAND accountability & consequence from Fox "News" and the Party that always says it is so supportive of accountability and "law and order"?

Someone needs to publicly confront each of these bullies at every step and say, "Okay, IF we prove you wrong will you make amends for the damage you have done? This must include a widespread public apology and an admission that you have sinned and that your word on anything in the future is to be suspect."

This is not hard to agree to if one is confident of their stance and until we as citizens get a spine and publicly demand this of these rumor mongers they will continue. It IS that simple and it's part of the strategy of stopping bullying and lies!

We can make public outcry, but there is no way I can think of to legally hold a news outlet accountable for printing falsehoods (other than libel in particular cases). In any case, Fox might argue that it is all opinion commentary. The FCC supposedly has a requirement for truthful reporting in its licensing rules, which could theoretically be used to revoke a broadcast license, but I don't think it has ever been successfully applied. It is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Apology would not be enough. Being fired and Faux News off the air would be a start. Finally jail time for these liars. If threatened with that, they would roll over on their boss.

+7 # Dave W. 2011-04-25 07:52
PatriotPaul, You suggest we confront the bullies and if we "prove" them wrong we can then demand public apologies, admissions of guilt and suspicion cast upon further proclamations. This would only be possible if applied to people with morals. It will prove ineffective on those out to create controversy for the making of a buck. Even if Obama produced the Holy Grail i.e. his "long form birth certificate" the birthers on Fox and elsewhere would go into immediate "denial" mode. It would instantaneously become "yesterdays news." These are either racists or coin whores or both. How many Klan members, past or present, step forth and "publicly" denounce themselves as sinners? I'm guessing its a short list.

Most other presidents lives can be traced and documented from birth to death, no one in the US has ever heard of him until he ran for president.

Also does anybody even remember that it was Hillary that first demanded to see the Birth Certificate?

+21 # genierae 2011-04-25 08:15
Yamaha22: Please specify where you got your information that Hillary Clinton "demanded to see the Birth Certificate". Also, Barack Obama was well known in the Chicago area for years as a community organizer, and holding state office. Before that he was known all through his school years by classmates, teachers, etc. He was a US Senator for two years before he ran for the presidency. And why doesn't anyone mention that his MOTHER WAS AN AMERICAN, therefore HE IS AN AMERICAN NO MATTER WHERE HE WAS BORN! John McCain was not born in the US, so why wasn't his birth questioned?

The main reason that he is being treated with such disrespect and hatefulness is because he is a black man. These white supremacists were certain that he wouldn't be elected, and when he was they lost their grip on reality. Now they are seen for what they are: racists.

Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution:
"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President..."

@ GENIERAE:
EXACTLY!!! No one is contesting BO's mother was a US citizen, therefore BO is a US citizen regardless of where he was born. Besides, he was born in Hawaii... the last time I checked, that was part of the US!

So, either the birthers haven't read the Constitution or don't know that Hawaii is part of the US. Why wouldn't it surprise me if either (or both) of these things are true?!

John McCain did have his citizenship questioned, extensively. Go back and look at the 2000 primary where he ultimately lost to George W. Bush.

+2 # forparity 2011-04-25 15:24
It also came up in the 2008 race. Sombody sued. The Senate voted (non-binding) unaminously declaring him to be a natural born US Citizen..

Past that - I'm convinced of both of them. What a mess..

Well.. the main reason that he is treated disrecpectively is that we have politics in this country - there is no evidence that this sort of treatment by the other side is anyting unusual. In fact, the language towards Obama from the left - is mild compared to what Bush had to endure. Whether or not, they, respectively speaking, deserve it is a entirely different conversation, which likewise will only bring about disrespect from both sides about the other.

+9 # genierae 2011-04-25 16:22
I disagree, forparity. Immediately after Obama moved into the White House, Republicans attacked him viciously, and they haven't stopped. I know these Tea Party types and most of them are racist and many even gloat about their bigotry. Most Democrats had a wait-and-see attitude with George W. Bush, they gave him time to show his intentions. His murderous actions and his complete lack of integrity brought about the massive protests by outraged citizens. Obama is a decent man, I don't think you can compare his actions with Bush's. He just happens to be the wrong color. If you don't think that racism is part of the picture, then you need to think again.

-12 # forparity 2011-04-25 19:01
Perhaps you should go back and watch the 2001 inaugural parade..

See - hate and intolerance of others, is hate and intolerance towards others.

Obama had something like 77% support shortly after he came in. How many blacks in the country.

See - it's about Obama, and how inept, and divisive he is. We've never had a president who personally has spoken so divisivly as this man.

+1 # billy bob 2011-04-25 20:29
Before the election the only people who hated him were right-wing psychos who couldn't accept that he could be President because of the color of his skin. Now, they're STILL the only ones who refuse to look at his birth certificate, but they're not the only ones who don't approve of the job he's doing. All the liberals who he made promises to are disappointed that he's turned into another conservative.

You're right about the divisiveness. He was elected to FIGHT the far right gop. Instead, he's been working with them exclusively. He's divided the country between those who elected him by a landslide, but are being totally disregarded, and those who want to see him dead, but who he's constantly trying to win the approval of.

If he'd stand up to the extreme far right, you'd see unity in the other 77% of us who'd support someone finally doing that.

+1 # Anarchist 23 2011-04-26 18:07
the hard Left never supported Obama and those of us who voted for him from the left hoped for the best. We are disappointed and in many cases the Hard Left's objections were legitimate and prophetic. OTOH Bush came to the presidency under very fishy circumstances and his policies, which for the most part Obama/ObombO lamentably follows-gitmo, bombing, survelliance-op ened the door to what we see today.

Actually GW Bush received better treatment. This whole liberal media bias was talked about after the 2000 elections and was debunked. Gore received far more negative press than Bush did. Bush received far more positive press while Gore received more neutral press coverage.

All countries have politics. That is why they are called politicians.

The Right has attacked the Left viciously for more than 30 years and rules talk radio to which MOST people listen to. The Media overall is owned by Capitalists. It was primarily online that we saw Bush even get bashed but on mainstream media they used kid gloves.

From what I've gleaned, was Hillary supporters. Not seen any evidence that it was Hillary directly.

According to a John Avalon piece:

"But there's an inconvenient truth liberals are going to have to confront: The Birthers began not on the right, but on the left.

Investigations for my new book, Wingnuts, revealed that the Birther conspiracy theory was first concocted by renegade members of the original Obama haters, Party Unity My Ass,[the PUMAs]

[..] a splinter group of hard-core Clinton supporters who did not want to give up the ghost after the bitter 50-state Bataan Death March to the 2008 Democratic nomination.
[..]

A Clinton supporter from TX known as Linda Starr was particularly fired up by what she later told me was "the daily misogynistic hate speech against Hillary" during the primaries. As a Dem precinct captain in Medina County.[..]

Starr's real talent was as an a sic. [dirt digger] She was also cited as a key source for CBS' discredited election year investigation into Bush's Nat'l Guard records that led to Dan Rather's [firing] [..]

Starr called Philip Berg [a Clinton supporer].. Berg recalled [..]: 'Have you heard about Obama not being nat'l born?' I said, 'Yes.' She said, 'Well, now it's for real, and you're the only attorney in the country with brass balls enough to sue Obama.'"

Homo sapiens evolved and survived as a species due to a persistent fear of the "other" - the "other" is not like us, not 'our kind of people' as my republican parents solemnly intoned all through my childhood. Being different is a threat; different might be violent, or carry diseases, or - perhaps worse - be smarter and more able to grab your resources than you. This ingrained fear makes the 'other' an automatic target of suspicion and hatred, but people of intelligence and ability and independent perception also know the "other" can also bring new and better things to us.

Sad to say, there are way too many people who haven't intelligence, ability and independent perspective. Lizard brains of the world - untie!

I am going to toss out a theory here; a theory that explains why even though Obama was born here in Hawaii why there has been obfuscation over the birth certificate. The theory involves a minor scandal Obama needed hidden, yet was too trivial to be of use to either Hillary Clinton or John McCain during the 2008 campaign.

The theory is that the original birth certificate lists one Frank Marshall Davis as the father and that the young Obama was born out of wedlock.

Obama grew up pretending that the man married to his mother was his biological father, and took the Obama name into politics. The revelation that mom had had an affair and that Obama was illegitimate is an embarrassment, and in a tightly contested election race might be a small liability given Davis' support for Communism. But given that Davis was from Chicago, there is no question that Obama, in this scenario, is still a naturally born US citizen.

This scenario also explains the statement Obama made in the video about how his father served in WW2, because while Obama Sr. and later Soetero were too young to serve in WW2, the far older Frank Marshall Davis did in fact serve in WW2.

This seems to make the most sense to me.

Even if true it would make no difference to me. How many people in this country i were born under such a circumstance? NOT their fault and we have no right to criticize or condemn them. There are many others we could name who are self-made bastards in the strictest moral sense. That was their CHOICE. That is their fault-and ours for allowing them to seize power over the country and our lives.

Obama's grandfather and the Uncle who was introduced at his inauguration served in WWar11...never heard of Frank Davis until now unless that's his Uncle's name and he is from the Midwest; Obama's Mother & Father, and American Grandparents should be rolling over in their graves over this stupidity. This is definitely racial because skin color is all they have...I would love to see Obama go against those Fox idiots in an intelligence contest; some of those people can't even speak correct grammar!

It appears that the best thing the repug presidential candidates have going for them is that they're competing with President Obama, who's having a hard time convincing other Democrats that he's one too. I bet some repugs secretly like him.

Meanwhile, the best thing the President has going for him is the repugs who want to take him down. I'm sure Democratic strategists secretly like them.

I wonder if any candidate will run in 2012 people can vote for based on merit.

+6 # in deo veritas 2011-04-25 06:10
The only reason some of these shill would have a chance is that lots of people tend to trust people stupider than they are. Look at the crowd of losers the Repugs have going. Maybe we should make passing the same citizenship test as those seeking to become citizens as a requirement for holding ANY public office. That would certainly narrow the field in elections. Would Palin have a chance? HA!

The right-wing wingnuts never pulled such a stunt about any other Democratic candidate for President. This is unalloyed racism -- they did it first because they were shocked that the black candidate actually won, having figured that the general public would reject him at the polls. Now they're keeping the phony suspicion going because there are enough idiots who believe the canard, and they vote. BTW, McCain was born in Panama. Nobody challenged him on the technicality that made him eligible. But of course he's an OK Caucasian, and a Republican.

-6 # forparity 2011-04-25 15:28
Technically you're off on all accounts./

It was left - wingnuts that pulled this stunt off against Obama. After a while - probably since Obama did not do a good job of putting it to rest (many of his staunch sporters are officially on record with that view), the right wing nuts - picked it up an ran with it.

McCain has long been challenged on the same issue. Most recently during the 2008 election cycle.

It's not about race - it's about politics. As soon as the national media treats all the same - left and right - then we'll start seeing a great reduction in such filth, nonsense, etc.

Obama was clearly born in Hawaii and most of the FOX people named in this article have said so unequivocally. Their demand to see the birth certificate (rather than the certification of live birth which has been published) might just be due to their desire to end this silly debate so that we can get on to discuss more important things.

Frankly, it looks more and more to me like Obama is refusing to comply with the request to produce the birth certificate so that he can use the controversy politically. It helps Obama to have a bunch of crazy people opposing him so he can play victim to their conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, attention on the economy, foreign policy interventions, civil liberties violations, corruption (within his administration) , and other issues that reflect negatively on Obama get less attention.

Sad thing that with the problems we have here, that any party would want this type of Soap Opera Mentality representing them.
I do not have any high ambitions for democrats either, they have no imagination, no perception of how bad they look also. I believe Trump egomania helped him recognize a shallow GOP field--most don't trust any of them--and an opportunity to step in and grab the nomination. I believe his past, from bankruptcies to his Casino dealings, will help best clarify whether he is fit for the presidency.

Just by way of clarification, John McCain was born in the "Panama Canal Zone" which, rightly or wrongly, was considered a "US Territory" in 1936. Otherwise the mentality demographic which even considers this whole this whole thing legitimate, might well reflect the following proposal that it could be time to float a proposal opening up the F.S.N.A's. ("Fragmented States of the North Americas") Presidential candidacy in the spirit of some hiring practices, especially in the Public Sector, in which there is a statement appended to the effect that "THIS POSITION WILL BE HELD OPEN UNTIL A SUITABLY QUALIFIED CANDIDATE IS FOUND"! A rider might be appended to the proposal that "CANDIDATES PUT FORWARD AND/OR FUNDED BY MAJOR CORPORATE, MEDIA, UNION OR OTHERWISE DISPROPORTIONAT ELY REPRESENTED BY THE ENTRENCHED MASS MEMBERSHIP DEMOGRAPHIC OR FINANCIAL INTEREST, WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED".
I mean, look what the "Citizen- Clause" status-quo has brought the country to, in terms of "qualified candidates for many years or even decades, what?

M Matters should know this.

I'd bet MSNBC, not only over the past 2 yrs, but in recent wks(since Trump started trumping it up),has run 10 X's as many spots on the birther thing, than has Fox.

Of course, since the birther thing was born out of a Hillary campaign worker during the 2008 primary season, then picked up by a life-long Democrat(Philip Berg-who took it viral on YouTube-filed suit to prevent Obama from being elected Pres), and MSNBC is a left of Center Democratic Party shrill channel, it would make sense that MSNBC would be pushing this story from day one (of course, they never mentioned or challenged the originators of the movement).

The more the media pushes/covers the story, the more nut cases are going to jump on the wagon.

Reminds me of the Bush lied on the WMD's to get us into war shrillers-or the Bush crashed the Clinton economy and turned surpluses into deficits shrillers. Pres Clinton, SenEdwards, Cohen, Sen Levin-the whole shabang-said that they all had had the same story for years. Clinton pushed nuclear issue as well.Bush ran with the same. The trashing of the silly proj surpluses in 2001-03 was caused almost entirely by the crash that Bush inherited. But, as I've always maintained here, he didn't fix the problems, either.

This issue of birthers goes to fundmental racism, alive and well. For the stable of yellow hair "glams" at Fox, it is intollerable that a half black man is smarter than the mess of the
them. Roger Ailes hires by looks, not brains.

What else has FOX and the Teapartiers got?

They sure are not going to criticize Obama for his transfer of wealth to the richest few. And they are not going to attack him for expanding the neo-con/Israeli wars against Muslim nations. They really love his healthcare boom for insurance companies.

I wish more people would spend time looking up the facts than questioning what people are 'saying'.

Both of Honolulu's major newspapers (the Advertiser and the Star-Bulletin published announcements of the birth, Aug. 4, 1961

Berg's claim was dismissed by the U.S. District Court, March 2009

Those who endorse the "birther" controversy, ie. Trump, Palin and Fox News, offer about as much to the American public as a empty box of Kleenex. Unfortunately, these politicos are manipulators, not dummies. Trump and his ilk are just tossing out this emotional bait and reeling in those ill-informed Fox watching people, who sadly take this message to the polls. Trump would love to simply open his checkbook and move into the White House. But instead, he's gotta appeal to people's fears and bigotry. He knows that people often vote emotionally, not on the issues.

I guess FOX needs to read the Daily Freeman out of Kingston, NY. http://www.dailyfreeman.com/articles/2011/04/24/news/doc4db42b648ade1665369051.txt

The larger picture and more important point is we should want the best possible, qualified person as president, regardless of race, sex, religion, or nationality. Baseball teams, corporations, and every other facet of life, know, to get the best, you recruit from all possible sources. Limiting the pool to draw from is like institutionaliz ing dumbing down.

I agree. A president should make his birth certificate a public document, accessible by any and all on the Internet... and, also, his divorce hearing transcripts, his income tax returns, every lawsuit that every has been filed against him, every account history in which he has had a past-due payment, and any and every other legal document, contract and court proceeding against him. We don't want any president who is a liar, a breaker of any contract, a cheater on any wife and children he has entered into a legal agreement to be faithful to.

Today President Obama's birth certificate was published on the Internet.

Okay, Harumph Trump, now lets see those transcripts of your two divorce proceedings and of all those suits that have been filed against you. Okay, Mrs. Palin, let's see all your legal dirty linen and details of assertions of malfeasance by you. Okay Fox News. You wanted a show. Let's see your party's candidates show us legal documents that reflect THEIR trustworthiness.

Or will you, as usual, fall all over your asses backing up when your party's candidates have something interesting in THEIR closets.

I'm volunteerin' (as a potter) to make a ceramic hairpiece for Donald Trump with a kale-wool fiber interior linin' (to assimilate body warmth generated by an overheated ego) and some nodes to attach to his few remaining synapse centers, especially the ones which work his mouth which seems to have taken a path entirely hooked up to the Tea Party control center! And a specially fitted one for Hannity with nodes to Rupert Murdoch fantasy central. And by the way Trump -KEEP YER FILTHY CORRUPTING PAWS AWAY FROM SCOTTISH GOLF!
